Title: Best Disaster? and your ideas..

Wolla - July 21, 2007 07:58 PM (GMT)
Hi all,

I have just joined you fanatics, as i am now addicted to CC's books.

I started off about 9 months ago reading "lost City" with Kurt Austin, that a friend gave me. I was so enthrawled with it, that i had many sleepless nights, from that point on, i went down to book sales trying to find another one and found the Dirk Pitt series.. OMG!!! so now i am going to the 2nd hand Book stores, picking up as many CC books i an find. i have gotten through about 12 in the last 9 months. I just wish i had read them in chronological order. I love the CC novels as most if not all of the disasters theoretically could happen, or be achieved in one way of another.

Anyways, my questions:

1) What was your favourite Disaster that Dirk Pitt, Or Kurt Austin Heroically prevented?

2) What ideas do you have for a disaster that Pitt or Austin could solve? (please dont put full fan fition here, just the ideas of what and maybe how..)

My answer to Q1) mine was probably from "Atlantis Found" where Karl Wolf was trying to flood the world by detatching the polar shelf. It seemed so possible, that i loved the idea.

My answer to Q2) I'm thinking maybe some Insane electro physicist creates some kind of contraption that disturbs the tides, maybe by doing something to the moon (a bit too futristic for Pitt novels, but maybe Austin ) or some other way that stops tidal flow, or disturbs it in some way.... (that was just a quick idea i came up with to get the ball rolling. feel fee to adapt it, or even better, come up with your own..)

Cheers all,

Loving the forums

Wolla

Welcome to the forum, Wolla!! And to the World of Clive Cussler books!! Good question, since I have created a number of fan fiction stories on this forum. But yes, if you were to posit the notion of something to disturb the Moon you would definitely affect the tides all around the world. Personally I am obseesed about Submarines, Gold, Islands, Pirates, Outer Space, History, Politics, Conspiracies. If you can wrap all that into a nice and neat package like my many fan fiction stories have included all these things. w:

I think I am having daja vu. I started with Lost City too, and have read out of order, though I have read 21 of his books. I didn't think you have read any of the Oragon Files yet or ToK for that matter. To me there ain't any plot too futuristic for Dirk and Al. I am am also addicted to his books to the point my grandmother has forbbined me from saying the name CC. Welcome to the forum.
1.) Vahalla Rising is one of my most favorite.
2.) Saving that for my fanfics.

Welcome to the forum, Wolla! Hope you enjoy it here.

Can't really think of any mysteries etc that CC hasn't already covered or versions of them. My fave disaster, although not averted by DP, was the explosion in Havana harbour in Cyclops. Probably my fave because Pitt was caught right in it, woke up hanging over a sign and then proceeded to collect kids and dogs and take them to safety!

Welcome Wolla! w:

Atlantis Found was the first book I read. It is very difficult to pick a favourite book, my favourite escape would have to be Dirk's great escape in the underground river in Inca gold, and preventing the Zolar's from escaping with a cache of ancient treasures in the process. snor:

Welcome, Wolla! I hope you enjoy your time here as much as I (and the rest of us) do!

*****SPOILER ALERT*****

1) It's probably easier to determine my least favorite disastors. One was the reason given for the villains to dig that big tunnel under central america. I don't remember what was given, or what my expectation was, but I remember being really dissappointed. The other (not really a disaster) is the utterly ridiculous oil teleportation device (a new species of petroleum-producing bacteria or something like that lining the briefcase would have been way better).

I guess one of my favorite disasters was in Treasure of Kahn because a) the oil market is SO fragile and the world economy is 100% dependent on oil and B) it seemed really plausible that earthquakes could be triggered by concentrated sound waves (and smashing a burning ship into an oil port would be bad news, too).

My other fav were the A/C nukes in the cars featured in Dragon. One could be parked outside on the street right now and we'd never know it.

2) Would have to ponder this one.

I've got to agree with Oswalder, the oil crisis in ToK was genius, and incredibly realistic.

I also love the disasters from Black Wind and Inca Gold (ok, it wasn't really a disaster, but it was fun!).
