Title: Making Connections to Clive Cussler
Description: A look at places/vessels in the books.

Helene Noelle - June 5, 2004 07:58 PM (GMT)
Pitt and Loren Smith arrive in San Felipe and meet Giordino and Gunn at the ferryboat, the Alhambra in Inca Gold (36).

Clive Cussler grew up in Alhambra, California.

DirkPitt - June 6, 2004 01:48 AM (GMT)
This from Raise the Titanic ;

"How about the supply ships?" Pitt asked.
"No problem there. This weather is duck soup to big ten-tonners the likes of these two. The Alhambra is in position to port, and the Monterey Park is right where she's supposed to be to starboard."

Cheers t:

While on the related subject of maritime expeditions, Cussler's non-profit agency is actually named "after" the agency he created in his Dirk Pitt adventures --- NUMA!

DirkPitt - June 19, 2004 12:57 PM (GMT)
The U.S.S. Merrimack was an ironclad just like the "Texas" in Sahara.

The National Underwater & Marine Agency (NUMA) was an idea forwarded by an attorney and eventual president of NUMA, Wayne Gronquist. Clive Cussler himself was against the idea but was out-voted.

Helene Noelle - July 2, 2004 11:06 PM (GMT)
Clive Cussler's involvement with the search for John Paul Jones 's famous Revolutionary War ship, the Bonhomme Richard , led to his establishing NUMA:
"Then in 1979 during an expedition, where I was searching for John Paul Jones' ship, the Bonhomme Richard an Austin attorney who was a volunteer suggested that I should incorporate as a non-profit organization rather than just write the checks out of my own bank account. So that is what I did and that is how NUMA became a non-profit organization in Texas." [Interview by Marc Levesque cited at Numa.net]

 Admiral Sandecker dines at the John Paul Jones Club in Treasure (22).

 "During the with fight the British frigate Serapis in the North Sea, Jones is credited with saying, "Sir, I have not yet begun to fight." The American crew eventually boarded and took the Serapis where they watched the Bonhomme Richard sink into the North Sea." [cited from numa.net]

The American Robert Fulton (later renowned as the “inventor” of the steamboat) is commissioned by First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte to build an undersea craft capable of breaking the British blockade. Fulton christened his boat Nautilus (the same name chosen by Jules Verne 70 years later) and successfully demonstrated it on the Seine in 1800.

Bonaparte Nash, a character in Trojan Odyssey (44)

Napoleon Bonaparte is mentioned in Night Probe (71) - and there are references to Napoleon in his other books.

The American Civil War had stimulated more immediate interest in submersible combatants, particularly in the Confederacy, where raising the Union economic blockade was a primary objective. There, the most spectacular success was achieved by the hand-cranked submersible CSS Hunley, which in February 1864 sank the USS Housatonic in Charleston Harbor – the first-ever sinking of a warship by a submarine.

The Hunley is mentioned in Valhalla Rising (37, 49)

St. Julien Perlmutter has a model of the famed Conferderate submarine Hunley. Trojan Odyssey (17).

Clive Cussler and his NUMA Crew who found the Hunley, May 3, 1995, watched proudly as a team of archaeologists lifted the Civil War submarine August 8, 2000 four miles off the coast of Charleston, SC.

The Hunley sailed and fought several years before Jules Verne wrote of the Nautilus in 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. It has been speculated that there might be a connection...

If the Hunley was an inspiration for the Nautilus, submarine technology developed quickly in the mind of Jules Verne.
