Title: Clive and future Movies????
Firefighter1373 - November 14, 2007 04:34 PM (GMT)
I am a huge Clive fan and have read most of the Dirk Pitt books. I was wondering, from all of you that have my background information and are far more knowledgable about this than me, do any of you think after all the problems with Sahara, will we ever see a Dirk Pitt movie again???? If there is information in an earlier post, please let me know where it is so I can read it.

In my humble but educated forecast of future Cussler adaptations, I am positive there will be more movies despite Clive's strong opinions. I would be too if I had created my own characters and would extract a huge amount of money for any loose adaptations. p:

I'd say probably no more movies in the near future. What production company would want to go through that? Clive needs to produce his own movie, by hiring people who have his vision. Only then will we see another movie, but I don't think that is something he's interested in, especially at his age.

The only way we get another movie is for Clive to pass away(God forbid anytime soon) and for Dirk to see the monetary potential of a loose adaption.
IE: take the money and run like so many other authors have done.

Just like Heston's gun, any future movie rights would have to pried from his "cold dead hand"

I almost included that in my sentiment but thought it was too morbid. p:

Very doubtful in my opinion.
Cliver has had is fingers burned on two occasions now, and Im pretty sure he will have discussed this at length with his kids. (specifically Dirk and Dana).
I think quoting Mr Heston is pretty much on the mark.
For Clive to see his masterpeices on film in there truest form, would take more money than he has to put up himself, and in that form would only be viewed by his many fans.
For them to be money spinners, they would have to have 'A' list actors and production team's who are not only excellent at there jobs, but major fans of the books too.
It would be great to have them serialised in film form in the same way the Bond books were, But it seems to me that although widely known, Clive's books (unfortunately) don't have the same following as Mr flemming.
(Although these days I think more fans are for Flemmings films than the original books)

I’m throwing my lot in with everyone else. I’d be amazed if another film was done anytime soon, as with Sahara both parties felt they got burned. CC felt like his creations were shanghaied by money grubbing studios, and the studio itself felt the author interfered so much that it actually contributed to the abysmal box office receipts.
I didn’t realize how poorly Sahara did until I did a little digging. According to the LA Times (via a Wikipedia search) it cost $160 million in production and $80 million in distribution. At first, it appeared to have done reasonably well, garnering $120 million in box office sales. But factor in the total expenses, and it “is considered one of the biggest financial flops in Hollywood history”.
Everyone admits the studio failed miserably in containing the skyrocketing costs, but throw in what happened with the author and I highly doubt any production company would touch another CC adaptation with a ten foot pole. The immense financial loses, the lawsuits, and the bad blood all around has, unfortunately, put a black mark on the potential franchise. I think that even if CC decided to give it another shot he’d have a tough time with any possible studio.
Real bummer, as I think the film stands alone as a great adventure.

I for one will be first in line to see another Dirk Pitt movie.
"Hey Clive Numa can live on for another 100 years off the movies from your books!" Think about that.............
