Title: Book Monster Alert
Description: sign the petition here
DirkPitt - June 22, 2004 05:56 PM (GMT)
I started this topic after I read hiramyaeger's account of seeing abused Cussler books during his recent travels.
| QUOTE |
| I saw a bunch of CC books (mainly AF and Serpent) while we were traveling. It hurt to see the condition some of the books were in. |
Maybe the law should be changed to help protect these innocent Cussler books. These monsters who mis-handle Cussler books should be prosecuted and held in detention until they can prove to the literary public that they'll change their dog-earring and cover-creasing ways.
I'll be the first to sign the petition that we'll send to our local law-makers.
Anyone else willing to sign ?
WARNING ... the description and graphics below could upset some readers!
Below is an example of cruelty to Cussler books. After borrowing a hardcover Iceberg from a local library, this book monster discarded the dust-jacket and continually stomped onto the boards until the pages were squeezed out from its insides!
I bet now you are willing to sign up and have your say about the appropriate penalty that should be dealt out to these twisted individuals.
Please reply to this post and you'll be automatically added to the petition.

OH THE HUMANITY! WHAT A TRAVESTY! :o Another mighty "Holy Grail" has fallen! Please pause for a moment of silence.............................................................................................................
Maybe the library system should invoke a system for monitoring all incoming books and make those people who mistreat books do community service within the library system. :)
I am a firm believer that some people act like if something is not theirs and if they didn't have to pay for it, then they tend to abuse that priviledge!
No matter...their day will come and victory over these Book Oppressors will see its judgement day! :P
Ian Kharitonov - June 22, 2004 06:23 PM (GMT)
Ewww.... That's gross!
A person treating ANY book like that should be sentenced to life.
A person treating Iceberg like that should be quartered!
hiramyaegar - June 22, 2004 06:25 PM (GMT)
To give you an idea, some of the books were missing covers, pages were missing, pages were marked, sections were coming out, and some were sticky (I won't ask why).
Foss Gly - June 22, 2004 09:00 PM (GMT)
Tsk, tsk. What a mess. Though I can understand some cheaply made paperback novels becoming pretty haggard, it's a shame to see Iceberg in that kind of condition.
Helene Noelle - June 22, 2004 09:43 PM (GMT)
How about the MONSTERS who do not have a clue about what a "bookmarker" is and fold the corner of the page to their place in the book!
Mostly Heep - June 22, 2004 10:01 PM (GMT)
Is it hunting season yet? These people should be made to pay...........
householdrob - June 23, 2004 12:50 AM (GMT)
I had to look away before I became sick.
I say we flog the bastards! pardon the french but thats what they are, just as guilty as book burners, and just as vile.
Oh its such a shame, somebody should have picked up on the abuse before the unthinkable happened. A coffee stain here, a page torn there, ITS NOT DIFFICULT TO SEE THE SIGNS PEOPLE!
Mostly Heep - June 23, 2004 01:24 AM (GMT)
I blame myself......................I should have taken action but I turned the other cheek thinking that they might learn if left alone. My fault all my fault
Now I know why some species eat their young.
tonym5 - June 23, 2004 06:17 AM (GMT)
always am saddened when someone uses a marker to highlight something, dog eared pages, notes in the margins, etc...which is why i never lend out my books period and public library books often are so abused that i am disgusted so please sign me up for this petition. its bad enough most people will not read because they do not care to. that just makes me want to bonk them over the head. or someone who goes through twelve years of education and manage not to learn anything.
AlGiordino - June 23, 2004 11:15 AM (GMT)
That is... Absolutely unforgivable... R.I.P.

Cusslermen - June 24, 2004 12:03 PM (GMT)

A small group of us gathered together yesterday to make up a plan of action...
DirkPitt - June 24, 2004 05:30 PM (GMT)
Thanks to Cusslerman's newspaper story, NUMA_Diver's Book Monster Task Force found this guy lurking around the library grounds.
In an exclusive interview, the culprit had this to say as he was being led off ... "You got the wrong guy!"
yeah, right ... likley story ....
Anyway, this is just the first arrest in what we hope will be many more to come.
Keep signing everyone c:

Spouses, children, dogs, and books should all be treated the same. With respect, kindness, and tender handling. But, alas, there are some stupid people in the world today that have absolutely no respect for any of the above....where are they......I am a woman with tools....and I know how to use them....
Kellym - June 24, 2004 06:58 PM (GMT)
I have been unable to comment on this subject up until now as I have been to shocked and disgusted by such actions.
Now that I have had time to compose myself, I feel slightly better, no actually that is a complete lie......I feel sick! How could these people do such a thing?
I have spent the afternoon at our local police station working with them to try to come up with a plan of action to rid the world of these thoughtless co: and we decided that the best thing was for us to co-ordinate with your task force Mike so be expecting a call in the near future ;)

We're skipping the court, and send him straight to the electric chair.

hiramyaegar - June 25, 2004 11:19 PM (GMT)
Just a crazy idea, but I think we should make like a collection point for all these damaged books and donate them to shelters or something so the general public doesn't have to see such fine books in such poor condition. I don't know, it was just a wierd idea. I originally thought we should collect them, find somebody that knows how to repair the books and would be willing to do so, and combine books. So for example, one book has a torn cover, and we find another of the same book in bad condition, except for the cover, so we combine the two. I doubt this is possible, though

What I was trying to do didn't work, so either email or P.M. me with your name, email, comments, and if you've seen a damaged CC book before. I'll then add this to a webpage.
Loren - June 28, 2004 02:41 PM (GMT)
What will he charged with? Bookacide?
jet_doctor - June 28, 2004 03:42 PM (GMT)
ROFL!! That was a good one Loren. Bookacide in the first degree.
Kellym - June 29, 2004 04:52 PM (GMT)
There I was today just minding my own business in a charity store looking at the books when one caught my eye; it was in an aweful state, the cover was ripped and had that many creases the color had faded and you couldn't tell what the book was about, the title or author, when I turned to the first page which was covered in writing, oh why do they do it? Something then caught my eye; I saw the author and title of the book - it was 'Dragon'

I'm sorry but I have a different perspective from you folks. I love to see Cussler books damaged, dog-eared, torn up and destroyed. For two reasons. First it means that they have probably been well read and enjoyed. Second, it makes my copies worth more since there is one less out there in collectible condition!
Whatever - June 30, 2004 09:20 PM (GMT)
I agree with you all that it is a shame to see books abused. On the other hand Rob has a point........when I think about all the Cussler and other books I have in mint condition. The only books I have that look abused are my cook books and that proves one of two things.....I am a person who loves to cook or.......I am a lousey cook and need a lot of help.
Mandasy123 - July 1, 2004 12:51 AM (GMT)
Regarding my books, they are kind of beat up but I take them everywhere and the hadbacks are fine just the paperbacks
Loren - July 1, 2004 02:37 PM (GMT)
B) Rob, you have made my day! I agree with your perspective!
Butch 179 - July 1, 2004 03:03 PM (GMT)
<_< Hmm, Rob you are definately a mercinary soul. But, You do have a very good point. If they are well read, they are not going to be in pristine condition. :P
(also, my nice 1st's are worth more) p:

Still, I read my CC books often, but I try and keep them in as good condition as possible, out of respect, and because I want them to last a while.

Maybe we need to find one o' those bad guys and make an example out of him/her !?!! .....
