Title: ARC copies and other 1st editions
ajax090 - January 31, 2008 09:10 PM (GMT)
I am new to the board, been reading cussler since I was 10. (28 now) My Father was a big influence on me picking up my first Cussler book. I have started to collect cussler about a month ago, and have run into a few great people along the way. I am interested in trying to expand my collection.
I am looking for ARC copies, for some reason this just seems to be what peeks my mind the most. Does any know where i can get a few, or does anyone on here have a few that they would be willing to part with.
You guys and gals seem like a great group. At some point I will list what i have, I also have duplicates of some signed cussler 1st editions, so I might be willing to make a few trades.
Thanks everyone for your great post
kevin

Collecting Cussler ARC books can be an expensive and time consuming hobby! However, when you do locate one you don't have, you get the best rush of all!!
Anytime you want to know info on Cussler ARCs your welcome to contact me.

Thanks for the kind welcome.
I will try and add as much as I can. I have been over to cusslermen, and talked with Dave over there a little bit. Which I have seen also frequents this board. If any one has any questions for me, don't hesitate to email me. Like I said I will try and post a few things that are in my collection that i have duplicates for.

Nice find on those books Ajax. Usually if I part with books I give them to my forum member friends as presents or sell them on Ebay. I wish I could help you with the ARC's but I only have one of each and not very many. I just got back from Galveston and after looking through 1000's of used books I only walked away with The Maiden Voyage by Geoffrey Marcus and believe me it was worth walking away with that book for $3.00.
Keep us updated on your finds we love hearing about new Cussler and Cussler related books people get!

I am curious about a couple of things. I know I have asked before what ARC means but I have forgotten - so sorry about that.
My biggest question is what about the ARC's and other books make you want to collect them? Please don't take this as me asking like "what in the world are you guys thinking?" but more along the lines of what exactly intrigues you about them.
As with any hobby what you find some people who like some things that others don't understand and I guess this is my question. I like to collect comic books because of the stories and art but I am not going to go out and collect all the issues that have different covers.
I'm just curious what about the books with different covers and such make them appealing to you?
I really hope I am not coming across as criticizing what you guys enjoy doing - I am just curious.
By the way AJAX this is a pretty cool place with pretty cool people. You will enjoy it here and hope you post a lot.

That is a really good question and the answer for me is foremost I collect everything that has to do with the Empress of Ireland that I can afford to get and that is legal and that has expanded to other maritime beauties that outfit my shipwreck/library room which is about 300 sq. ft so I have the room to indulge. I'll post some pics of it later to give you an idea.

ARC= Advanced Reader Copy. Usually unedited - and designed to market the final product to book stores and distributors.
Sometimes - the final product (and what you buy from the bookstore) ends up edited and different from the ARC - and thus makes it a desirable product for the serious collector.
Myself - I just like the opportunity to read the book before the general population while it's in its purest state.
I've been groveling for a copy of Plague Ship - but so far I've been UNSUCCESSFUL!!

You're welcome Kevin, we love hearing about everyone's collections and congrats on your finds!
coach2709 - February 6, 2008 05:18 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the clarification Ace and everyone else for the reasons why you collect the things you collect.
I am guessing that an ARC book differs from the published book on a case by case basis but overall how much different is an ARC from a published book?
Now that I know (and probably will remember this time) I think I would like to get one and read it.

Regarding your question about differences - I'll frame it in this manner - recent ARC's that I have seen have included the disclaimer "uncorrected prooof for limited distribution". This indicates the publisher has not edited the book. Now we all know about the recent editorial issues in the books and Putnam's step to assign a new copy-editor. With that fact in hand - I imagine there might be some changes between ARCs and the final product from now on.
jwinchell - February 6, 2008 04:00 PM (GMT)
I just checked ARC Cussler on Ebay and found a Plague Ship ARC. If you've got an extra $249.95 + shipping, it's yours. I'd love it, but I'd rather wait until June and do something else with the $250.
Just thought I'd let you know.
ajax090 - February 6, 2008 07:41 PM (GMT)
that 250 is to much, i saw one go for 175 for that last week on ebay. That one is just so expensive because it is not out yet. Most of Clive Cussler books ARC are under 100 dollars. In my opinion unless you are really into collecting his work, this doesn't make a whole lot of since to collect ARC's they are just not worth the money, unless you find one really cheap. If that is the case. let me know. LOL
I hope this helps those that are just not sure about taking that next step.
To add one more thing to make life harder, they are really cool to own!!!!!!

Haha! You're in trouble now. It is addicting with all the items to collect out there. Just determine what you want to collect and work from there. I decided a while back I wanted to try and get a first edition signed of all his books in the best condition I could find. It is fun and I am a Nigh Probe away from finishing; just cannot find on that isn't a BCE or in decent shape. Good luck! :)
Empress - February 9, 2008 01:55 AM (GMT)
Jamie!!!!! Missed you!!! You should have told me you were looking for a NP. You were an absolute doll when I needed help!!
JamieNYY - February 9, 2008 05:48 AM (GMT)
Hey Julie!! Nice to see you again. I am embarrassed to admit that when I switched computers I lost just about everything web based that I had; URL's, logins and PWs. I tried to load some backups tonight and found all my old online stuff and could login again!! It was nice. Hope all is going well with you. So nice to be able to chat again, 3 books later or something! Still choosing books over food? I know I am!! :)
JamieNYY - February 9, 2008 07:12 AM (GMT)
Also, I have spent my monthly allotment of book funds on a signed (and authenticated) first edition copy of 'The Mick' (By Mickey Mantle) so NP will have to wait a bit I think since I am taking a Caribbean cruise vacation next month and need to save money to use down there. So in case anyone didn't pick up that the 'NYY' at the end of my name it means NY Yankees; which is probably apparent now given this post - hence why I would actually spend the money on a signed copy! :)

Also you might check out here for some other examples of that type of print:
http://www.cusslermen.com/Limited.htmBefore VJ's started getting them printed through Norwood Press a company called Cahill was doing something similar. That URL shows a few nice examples but is missing Valhalla Rising, Golden Buddha, and Blue Gold - and a Mayday that is a trade like the Pacific Vortex on the site. There is also a similar edition of Serpent but the spine says 'Private Press' so I am not sure who the actual publisher is or what the print run is, it is possible they are all 'presentations copies' because that is what mine says inside (PC) where the letter or number would be noted.
You can find these on eBay every once in a while, often at a decent price, sometimes better than the Norwood retail prices. I like them, they make a great looking set. Just a suggestion for you to look at if you're interested in that type of editions.
