Title: Technical Question about Ships
Description: Question about seacocks
DMSSwitcher - February 13, 2008 12:58 PM (GMT)
I have a technical question that is probably silly, but here goes.
What is the purpose of a seacock in an ocean going vessel? I understand for a live well in a fishing vessel, and ballast tanks if so equipped, but other than that it seems like a known weakness used to sink ships. Or as I suspect, am I missing something?
If this is the wrong place to ask this I apologize.
Thanks,
Ross

A boat may have a marine toilet or air conditioning and that would mean holes in hull below the waterline. You must have a seacock valve for those accessories as the first line of defence against the unwanted inflow of water.
Hope this helps and welcome to the forum!

In smaller boats (saftey and sport boats) it is also useful to drain water out of the boat once it is back on it's trailer for the water that gets splashed in the boat. (Well that's how we used it last night on a safety boat... admittedly the water got into the boat because the seacock was open)

I'd like to point out I'm not qualified to captain a safety boat so it wasn't my fault. I was beach master (stood on shore and chatted)
