Did Maj. Dirk Pitt defeat the smuggling ring run by a missing Nazi war criminal and return the Aegean to rights?
Good question. And it might have gone unanswered forever if not for a few unsung heroes toiling unnoticed in a back room at the Marion County Public Library headquarters building.
The final page in Clive Cussler's inaugural paperback, "The Mediterranean Caper," was missing in action when the little book came home to the library a couple of weeks ago.
A popular tome, "The Mediterranean Caper" has gone into action 81 times since 1973; but there would be no 82nd campaign with an MIA ending.
"We managed to scan in the last page from another copy and reinsert it," says Carol Durrence, who oversees processing of every book in and out the doors of the library system.
