Titanic Movie Heads for City
Cape Argus (Cape Town)
One of Hollywood's greatest disaster movies is to be remade in Cape Town.
The
Poseidon Adventure was a runaway box-office blockbuster when it opened in 1972, with big names including Gene Hackman and Ernest Borgnine.
The original bestseller was penned by popular novelist Paul Gallico.
It tells the story of a group of passengers who struggle to survive after their ocean liner capsizes between New York and Athens.
Now one of Cape Town's two big film companies, Film Afrika, has been given the huge task of recreating scenes featuring the 3 500-berth passenger liner.
"Building the set will be a huge challenge," said local producer Nina Heyns.
The company plans to use some locations such as the docks, but most of the scenes will be shot in a number of vast warehouses around the city.
Building starts next week on substantial parts of the SS Poseidon, a cruise ship of titanic proportions.
Filming starts in September and will give work to several thousand local extras - including many expert divers from stunt companies.
Filming is expected to take 11 weeks. The names of the stars are not yet known.
