Visiting the Titanic would be an awesome experience.
49° 56' 54" W, 41° 43' 35" N, 12,600ft down to the sea-bed.

Imagine coming up behind the ship and the first thing you see is this.

For the mere price of $36,000.00 you can! snor: They will take anyone with the bucks down to see it. Sadly it's not in my budget! t: I would risk seasickness to go and pay my respects.

I did at the Maryland Science Center. All I can say is WOW!

It was just like being there, except it only cost me $8.00! th:

People should leave the Titanic site alone. it's not a tourist site. it is a burial site of many dead who should be remembered by being left alone.

Documenting the wreck in the spirit that Bob Ballard did, without disrupting it in any way, I can fully support. And while I love the imagery brought back by Cameron and subsequent visitors, the plundering of the wreck by treasure hunters angers me beyond words. A few years ago, when a small portion of the hull was raised, I had my letter of protest published in the paper, as did several others.
It's a grave, plain and simple. Leave it be.

On the flip side, Raise The Titanic is one of my favorite Cussler books. But it's fiction. b:

Well said, Foss.

Unfortunately, greed and the desire to possess a little peice of history, transforms some people into pillagers.

Cheers ... t:

I agree...It is a grave and should be left alone. I wouldn't want anybody bothering my resting place..

But you know whats funny? Nowadays, we revel in the discovery of say...an Egyptian tomb (as an example). Everyone gets excited, we display actual dead bodies (ie: a mummy), and it's seen as okay. What is the difference between this and the wreck of the Titanic, in the long run? Is it a time thing, in the way that it's a long period of time?? Something to think about!! ;)

I strongly agree with you.

I think to view the relic in it's final resting place would be way to cool for words. To disturb the site in any way would be sacrelig in it's strongest form. The pursuit of history is a wonderful thing and and should never be discouraged in any way by anyone, but remember that when pusuing history, it should be for the history, not for the treasure or even the glory. Leave the Titanic alone now, it has been pillaged enough. Let the victims rest in final peace.

No, your right, it's not a "tourist" site, however if you're going to leave that ship wreck alone, why not all the rest of the wrecks people search for? I have to say I am for the recovering and displaying artifacts for the sake of preserving history and teaching it to the younger generations. It's easier to teach with visual aid. I am not for pillaging and pludering for profit. Another example being battlefields where relics are collected and displayed in museums. People fought and died there. Where do you draw the line? We wouldn't have museums of history without artifacts taken from sites where people perished. You can still respect the fallen while preserving the history of our past.

i'd love to go to the wreck of the Titanic. I's not in my budget either. To see it would be the most awesome sight in my life. Looking is cool, just leave it alone. Nature is doing enough to it already. t:

While I respect everyone's opinion and everyone has made valid points, I'd have to say my way of thinking goes along with what Liz (boisee) has stated. There are tons of places where just a few, or even thousands, have died and those situations have been preserved in all of our history museums. How else are we to keep alive the history from our past. Visuals are better because it makes the history real rather than just a story that is passed down through the generations.

I think another thing that affects people's beliefs on what should be done with history such as the Titanic (with regard to being a grave site) is one's own religious beliefs. For me personally, I believe that when you die, your soul is gone. The body is only a vessel that houses the soul. Others would believe that souls are still there. And while I agree that it is a grave site which deserves that respect, and should not be pillaged for profit, it is also a major piece of history and I don't see anything wrong with removing a few artifacts for preservation in museums and then leaving it to rest. I personally believe the folks who died on that ship would have wanted to be remembered in that way.

Yor are right Jet Doctor. We all believe different things. I too believe that the body is just housing for our soul or what ever you want to call it. Some may stay around after death but we won't know that for sure untill we have made that journey. Hope I can still stay around to see the wonders of the world I left behind. Untill then maybe enough history has been preserved on the Titanic t:
