Title: Reading in America

tonym5 - August 1, 2004 08:24 PM (GMT)
A recent poll has found that less than 50% of Americans read. I find this a terrible shame!!!! yike:

Same here!! I knew a fair portion of the population didn't read, but I didn't realize it was half!!! That is just sad.

yike: Yes it is shocking! In my family of 7, only my mother & I read constantly.

Here where i live (in Poland) the situation is much better. But here lives only 40 mln of people. And every year there are fewer of them that reads regulary. People don't have a time, or in their free time they chose internet or tv than a book.

Hi ripper w:

I can see how internet time cuts into reading time

Actually, those cassettes or cd's might be the answer for me. ;)

If I am not on the computer, or tending to chores, I am reading a book. Just finished reading Lost City by 'you know who' and Sandstorm by James Rollins.

My husband is an avid reader. We encouraged our son (who LOVES to play computer games) to read a books, and he became an avid reader too. He is nineteen now, and while he still loves computer games, he joined the Barnes and Noble club and just purchased a lot of books. :)

My mom, dad, and I all read a lot. But of them all, I'm probably the most avid reader. My dad reads some of the same stuff as I do, and Mom reads, well, I don't know.... All of us also read a lot of magazines.

I guess what my question would be is the poll says 50% dont read, dont read what? Dont read books, dont read anything at all, dont know how to read?

I have a hard time beliving the percentage is accurate if it pertains to the amount of Americans that read in general (not limited to books).

I was one of them untill recently. I read, I read all the time, but it was hotrod and truck magazines, at one time I had 13 subscriptions to various mags. Untill I found Cussler, then I have been picking up books and reading those when I get a chance....(when I'm not modifing my friends trucks).

My job has me traveling alot so I have been reading Cussler, Dale Brown, Dan Brown, and David Poyer's Dan Lenson novels. My family never read while I was growing up, I mean not casually that I remember so I never really thought about picking up a book. I was content to work out in the garage. But now I find myself longing for more time where I can sit down and read.

I find if I don't spend at least a half hour every night before bed I have a hard time getting to sleep. Of course spending only a half hour with a Cussler novel is impossible.

It was a CBS-NYTimes poll that said less than 50% of the American populace had not read one book in the past year. yike: yike: yike:

Fortunately, my girlfriend and I both like to read as much popular fiction as we can squeeze in. I do have several acquaintances, though, that read 2 or three books a year, at most.
