Title: Clive Cussler in his own books
Description: do you recall the parts he's played ?

DirkPitt - February 21, 2004 02:23 AM (GMT)
After seeing mr periwinkle join the forum, I thought this would be a good topic.

A lot of critics are a bit harsh about Clive incorporating himself within his own books. I for one think its great and unique to Cussler.

If you've read Sahara, you might recall "The Kid" played by Clive Cussler coming across Dirk and Al in the desert. What other parts do you remember he played in other books ?

Loren - February 21, 2004 02:36 PM (GMT)
Correct me if I am wrong, I don't have Shock Wave handy for reference, But didn't Clive appear down in the mines with Pitt, and handed him a note to pass to the driver of the bus for being late? :(

DirkPitt - February 21, 2004 03:05 PM (GMT)
Wow !! I'm impressed ! and with no Shock Wave handy !

Yes, Clive Cussler was "Chief Foreman" at the mine site in Shock Wave.

Here's an excerpt ;

The old engineer took a notebook and a pencil from a pocket of his jumpsuit and scribbled a few words. He tore off the sheet of paper, folded it and passed it to Pitt. "Give him this. It will guarantee your safe passage. I have to return to work before Dapper John's muscle boys begin to ask questions."
Pitt shook his hand. "I'm grateful for your help. You took a terrible risk by revealing Dorsett Consolidated secrets to a perfect stranger."
"If I can prevent future deaths of innocent people, any risk on my part will have been well worth it."
"Good luck," said Pitt.

Loren - February 21, 2004 03:36 PM (GMT)
This hits close to home, Pitt and Al chartered a shantyboat from the Bayou Kid at Charlie's Fish Dock to chase down Qin Shang's shady smuggling of illegal immigrants. Al was suprised to see the engine was a 427-cubic-inch-V-8 with dual quad carburetors. Just like Louisiana!!

Back in Charlie's Fish Dock restaurant and bar, the old fisherman glanced up at the bar as the bartender yelled across the room at him.
"Hey Cussler. You want another beer?"
"Why not?" The old man nodded. "One more brew before I hit the road won't hurt."

DirkPitt - February 22, 2004 01:39 AM (GMT)
This info came from Loren, I just transferred it over to this string.

Wasn't the burro, Mr. Periwinkle, also in Inca Gold? Loren asked the old cook, as he was carrying a bowl of carrots and lettuce if he was feeding a rabbit. He answers, "No, my burro. Mr. Periwinkle is getting up there in age and can't graze too well on his own."
Loren held out her hand. "It's been fun listening to your stories, Mr..."
"Cussler, Clive Cussler. Mighty nice to have met you, ma'am."

Cussler wrote himself into this book as well!! Isn't he awesome??

SUMMER - February 22, 2004 04:59 AM (GMT)
I remember the burro in INCA GOLD. In several of his books, Clive Cussler has written himself in there. SHOCKWAVE was one of them.

Did anyone else notice the same thing about Dirk's marriage to Loren that I did? That her father who was supposedly dead by murderer Maxine Rafferty, in VIXEN3, was there with her previously never mentioned mother. In VIXEN, Charlie Smith's body was found by Dirk in the fuselage of the downed plane, by the doomsday cannisters.

Also, will there be any books written with Dirk, Sr. as head of Numa? I love the Dirk Pitt books, have since I read my first one, which happened to be VIXEN3, since then I have read all of the Dirk Pitt books and some of the Kurt Austin ones.

I forgot to mention that in SHOCKWAVE, Dirk got a Totem Pole carved by the Indian that supplied fish to the mines. This was not mentioned when the bathtub and Marvelous Maeve were mentioned. Nor was the 1912 Ford automobile from the Titanic mentioned. This was mentioned in the book where the old Korean woman and her son were pirating boats, one in particular, the San Marino, and killing all the passengers and crew and some sort of very deadly nerve gas had been on the ship and was leaking out into the sea.

I loved the movie, Raise the Titanic, even with all the changes made. I hope that another actor as good as Richard Jordan who played Dirk is found, since Richard Jordan died a few years ago.

Welcome Summer !!

Yes, the mistake with Loren's wedding was certainly the stand-out gaff out of numerous errors in TO.

Dirk Pitt Sr. will be back as head of NUMA in the next Dirk Pitt book. Dirk Cussler (Clive's son) has finished the manuscript, so we all are looking forward to seeing his name on the cover and to seeing if his writing is as every bit as good as his dads. Should be released later this year !

Matthew McConaughey will be playing Dirk Pitt in the upcoming movie SAHARA.

 Clive was also in Atlantis Found, Valhalla Rising, and Dragon.
He was in all of these.
It is good that he puts himself in the books because like he said in "Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt Revealed" somtimes the heroes need a little help to get along.

aomelia37 - February 24, 2004 10:15 PM (GMT)
Didn't mr cussler also play a part in the story where dirk and al take on the family army in the antartic complex by selling them a snow cat or something that goes along the ice.

Guest - February 25, 2004 12:12 AM (GMT)
aomelia37, I'm pretty sure you are correct about that. I don't have the book handy to look it up, but I seem to recall what you are talking about. I have always loved the fact that Dr. Cussler has written himself into the books in some small way. Every time I see it I tend to smile. Correct me if I am imagining things, doesn't he also make cameo appearances in the Kurt Austin series?

Avery - February 25, 2004 12:15 AM (GMT)
OOPS! I just discovered that I had forgotten to log in before I posted that reply :P
Sorry about that! I'm the one that posted the answer to aomelia37 and asked about the cameo appearances in the Kurt Austin series. I'm just a bit  today.

pac - February 25, 2004 08:44 AM (GMT)
 the book in question is Atlantis Found lol

DirkPitt - February 25, 2004 11:03 AM (GMT)
Welcome aomelia37 !!

You have an awesome memory ! here is part you mentioned in Atlantis Found ;

AN hour and thirty minutes later, Dad and his crew, along with Frank Cash, stood and watched silently as the big red vehicle, belching a black cloud of exhaust into the crystal blue sky, lumbered across the frozen landscape toward the horizon.
"I never got Dad's name," said Pitt, as he sat hunched over the steering wheel,
gazing through the windshield and studying the ice field ahead for cracks and obstacles.
Giordino stood behind Pitt in the Snow Cruiser's confined chart and control room,
studying a topographical map of the ice pack. "The name on an envelope that was sticking out of his pocket read 'Clive Cussler.' "
"That is an odd name. Yet it sounds vaguely familiar."
"Whoever," said Giordino indifferently.

Helene Noelle - February 26, 2004 02:47 AM (GMT)
Clive Cussler first included his name as a character in his Dragon as a joke. But the fans loved the idea and he has included a role in subsequent books all the way through Trojan Odyssey. Visit http://www.geocities.com/hn4dpitt/clivecus...racterroles.htm for the details.

AlGiordino - February 27, 2004 05:03 PM (GMT)
When I was reading the Atlantis Found, the part where Cussler sold the snowcat whaddayacallit to Dirk and Al I wondered that isn't Cussler the man who wrote the book.. Then I was totally mixed up who was who
But it all makes sence now! B)

WNG-A-Pitt - February 28, 2004 04:51 PM (GMT)
I believe Clive Cussler has put himself into many books.. I think he started in.. Oh man i can't remember!!! I know i read this.............. Well i know he started in some book and he got good reviews on it so he kept putting himself in and does in almost every book after that, so you could name like 5-10 books already with him in it.. Just like in Flood Tide when he's in Antarctica and Cussler gives Pitt the Admirals giant red.. machine that was supposed to cross the Antarctic but never made it and he was fixing it up.. I think that's it, I don't have the book with me right now. Ouch  my head hurts from that 1!!

Dave from California - March 6, 2004 01:45 AM (GMT)
Just got finished reading "Treasure" for the first time. Did I miss it, or did Mr. Cussler NOT put himself in this one? I always look forward, when reading his books, to find the inventive way he will put himself in. But I didn't find him in this one. Am I mistaken? <_<

DeepSix - March 6, 2004 04:40 AM (GMT)
I think it's great when he puts himself into his books everytime I read a new book I hope to come across him in it someplace.

Mostly Heep - May 22, 2004 02:46 AM (GMT)
Dave;
He didnt start inserting himself into the books until Dragon which is the next book after Treasure.
Cheers Rob

Haven't looked in the books lately (been real busy) but I believe that when he rescues Dirk and Al from their sub after the support ship was hijacked (Vahalla Rising) that the yacht that Clive was sailing was named the Perriwinkle.

RIGHT YOU ARE SANDECKER FAN, IN AT LEAST 3 BOOKS PERRIWINKLE IS USED BY THE CHARACTER CLIVE CUSSLER, ONCE FOR A BURRO, ONCE FOR A DONKEY, AND ONCE FOR A CATAMARAN. CHEERS DAVID

Sandecker Fan - May 23, 2004 03:05 PM (GMT)
Hooray for me my memory works.

BIG RED - May 24, 2004 07:20 PM (GMT)
Clive kept using the word "Periwinkle" because he liked the sound of it. Thats why it has been used three times in his books.

Emerald Dolphin - June 3, 2004 07:18 PM (GMT)
Cussler appearing in his own books is one of the reasons I like them, its just funny seeing clive pop up unexpectedly when our hero dirk is in trouble or needs help. The books ive read so far that contain clive are Shockwave, as the disgruntled engineer who hates dorsett with a passion. 'Dad', in Atlantis found, who lends dirk an antique snowcat to reach and defeat the fourth reich and I think he appeared in Valhalla Rising although I'm not quite sure about that one.

Geordie Boy - July 20, 2004 02:38 PM (GMT)
Clive putting himself in his books is my least favourite part of the books. It always seems too contrived the way he always turns up to dig Dirk out of some impossible situation.

Archer - August 7, 2004 04:44 AM (GMT)
I just love when Clive put himself in the books i like to see where and when he will show up :)

OkieMan - December 25, 2004 12:10 PM (GMT)
Nobody asked me, but Clive putting himself in his books is one of my favorite things about them, especially his appearance in TO ! .....

loren1 - December 25, 2004 01:33 PM (GMT)
Looking for cc in his books has always been one of my favorite parts of his books. I look forward to finding him in the stories. It's a great way to personalize the books. Don't let anyone stop you from doing it dr. C., or in this case please Dirk keep doing it. th:

Helene, your site never ceases to amaze me

The first time Clive appeared in Sahara I was scared that was the end of the books because he broke that fourth wall but now after many appearances he has woven himself in at the right interval and kept it short but sweet. p:

I just scanned the thread, but has it been mentioned where Cussler raced against Pitt? or met him at a swap meet? Something like that! I read it soo long ago and my collection only spans 2 books!
Gees I’ve been out of the CC loop for too long
Definitely like the more prominent role he played with the super cool cat..
I also see how long it takes before there is a reference to Australia haha

Sapper - July 12, 2005 10:35 AM (GMT)
I'm just reading Sacred Stone and i think that Clive has a cameo role also in this book.
In page 202 when Meadows is talking to the man in catamaran.

Here's an excerpt:
The man was tall, a shade over six foot four inches in height, and slim. His face was framed by a trimmed goatee and a tangled mess of graying eyebrows, and his eyes were clear and twinkled as if possessing a secret no one else knew. The man, who appeared the wrong side od sixty years of age, still had his hands inside the torpedo-shaped object.
"Permission to come aboard?"
"Are you the sonar guy?" the man said, grinning.
"No," Meadows said.
"Come on aboard anyway," the man said with a trace of disapointment.

Meadows climbed onto the deck and approached the man. He looked vaguely familiar. Then Meadows placed the face. "Hey," Meadows said,"you're that author, that--"
"Retired author," the man said, smiling, "and yes, I'm him.
