Has Matthew McConaughey found a franchise that'll keep him away from shitty romantic comedies? I hope so.

The good ol' bongo boy stars as intrepid adventurer and master explorer Dirk Pitt in the adaptation of Clive Cussler's pulp novel Sahara, which finds the hero scouring the desert for a deadly toxin that is killing marine life all over the globe. Apparently a ship is involved as well.

Director Breck Eisner (of Sci-Fi Channel's Taken and Invisible Man series, and the little-seen but half-decent thriller Thought Crimes) took over the reigns for a departing Rob Bowman on the project. There was some brief controversy over Cussler's involvement with the script, but the flick did get made.

And it could be kinda fun. The trailer (which is a little small, but at least it's Quicktime) has appeared over at Cussler.net, and definitely has that bombastic "high adventure" feel. I thought the bit with the plane was pretty funny. :)

Looks like that www.cussler.net site might be a cool place to visit soon ;)

Pulp novel??? That's not how I would describe it, but okay. I never thought about that. Hopefully MM will be able to do something other than "romantic comedies." I think the only action movie he's done is U-571. Contact wasn't really action.

An African dictator's nuclear waste disposal plant is mutating the red tide, and so threatens the planet's ecosystem. It's up to Dirk Pitt and his associates from NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency) to find the source of the pollution and shut down the operation.
Searching for a treasure on the Nile, Dirk Pitt thwarts the attempted assassination of a beautiful U.N. scientist investigating a disease that is driving thousands of North Africans into madness, cannibalism, and death. The suspected cause of the raging epidemic is vast, unprecedented pollution that threatens to extinguish all life in the world's seas. Racing to save the world from environmental catastrophe, Pitt and his team, equipped with an extraordinary, state-of-the-art yacht, run a gauntlet between a billionaire industrialist and a bloodthirsty West African tyrant. In the scorching desert, Pitt finds a gold mine manned by slaves and uncovers the truth behind two enduring mysteries -- the fate of a Civil War ironclad and its secret connection with Lincoln's assassination, and the last flight of a long-lost female pilot....Now, amidst the blazing, shifting sands of the Sahara, Dirk Pitt will make a desperate stand -- in a battle the world cannot afford to lose!

I always have had this attitude that nothing is bad until you have seen it too judge. Another thing which I have followed is my gut feelings - very rarely does my gut feeling go awry.

So I think this movie will be a good one - I know Clive has had problems, and as I Indicated in another post - I would have wanted to see the Lincoln plot be in the movie - but from what I have seen of the trailer - i'm impressed. beer: party: th:

Yes, indeed this could be the breakout Clive needs if it does well. And for us Cussler fans who are disappointed by the edited story should find this adventurous and fun enough to at least appreciate the effort. If this earns over $30 million in the first weekend it should do well. w: t:

Maybe next time CC gets a book adapted for film, he'll opt for a mini-series instead. The advantages are longer screen time which allows for more portrayal of the novel's content/story/prose.

Look at how Stephen King's been using the mini-series method to convey his books ("The Stand" for example).

Consider how all the incredible plot twists of CC's books could be illustrated. A standard movie is just too short to get it all in.
