Title: The Dragonfly

A Distant Land

The ships drifted out of the fog bank like phantoms. For over a year, the fleet had been sailing away from their home. They had stopped in foreign lands where dark skinned men thrive, been beaten by storms, and sailed through rough and freezing seas. Out of the eleven ships that had started the journey, only three survived. Two had crashed on shoals, one captured by natives, one had gotten separated from the rest, and the last four had been destroyed in rough seas. Their mission had been to travel to the farthest reaches of the Earth, with the best of their people aboard, in order for their way of life to survive. The crews of the ships were exhausted, hungry, and sick with diseases. The captain of the lead ship, a big bear of a man, with a long flaming red beard, looked around.
“What do you think?” asked the captain of his aide.
“The crews are tired, hungry, and many are sick. I doubt that they will be able to travel much farther,” replied the aide.
“Yes. I doubt that these ships will last much longer,” said the captain, looking around again. “We shall set up here.”
Their conversation was interrupted by a shout from the forward look out.
“A river! I think I see a river ahead!”
The captain and his aide rushed up to where the look out stood. Following the lookout’s outstretched arm, the captain saw the river that the lookout was talking about.
“That river might lead us to a place to establish a home,” cried the aide.
“Yes, it might,” said the captain thoughtfully. “Or the land might be inhabited by barbarians. We have no way of knowing.”
