Title: Dirk Pitt sketch
Description: guess the scene ...
DirkPitt - October 8, 2004 03:48 PM (GMT)
The
Clive Cussler Collector's Society has kindly sent us this amazing sketch of
Dirk Pitt.
When the sketch first appeared there, they asked members to
name the actual scene and book the sketch was based on. So we'll play the same game here.
For those who are members of CCCS that played before ... you are obviously excluded ;)
Good Luck!

First of all,  Wow!
Great sketch.
My guess it is from Cyclops, when Dirk first escapes in Cuba. But I'm not sure.
Again, great drawing.
hiramyaegar - October 8, 2004 06:08 PM (GMT)
Great drawing!!!! th:
I can't decide whether thats the prison escape in Cyclops or the mine shaft in Night Probe. <_<
Nick Kismet - October 8, 2004 06:23 PM (GMT)
it's the escape from the labyrinth in Mediterranean Caper. I distinctly remember him getting naked and scraping his..umm...well, anyway, the agony of that moment is perfectly preserved in this sketch.
Good job!

Great sketch! Isn't this from his wild ride in the underground river in Inca Gold?

I'm thinking he crawling out of the sink hole in I.G.
Nice job!

Marvelous artwork! I`m with Nick Kismet on this one, that`s the escape from the labyrinth in Med Caper. w:

I concur.

I was the lucky CCCS member who answered the question first when it came out. I love this sketch. This sketch of Pitt has a close resemblance to the one I have in my head of him while reading the books.
hiramyaegar - October 11, 2004 07:36 PM (GMT)
Thats a superb sketch, I agree. It would be really cool if we had one of his face, like a portrait...

I wish I could get the image of the Med. Caper cover OUT of my head, because (duh) Dirk has wavy BLACK hair. Unfortunately, the red blonde Dirk on that paperback release has been stuck in my head practically from day one.
And now I'm afraid that people will think Matthew Mc(whatever) "looks" like Dirk with that skater hippie chic thing...don't get me wrong, I am both a granola crunching environmentalist and a soldier, but I don't see Major Pitt (TDY NUMA) looking like a guy from Jack Ass...come to think of it, Johnny Knoxville wouldn't make a bad young Pitt, Steve O is a little tall for Al, but...
Somebody stop me. I'm getting loopy

That's why I was so glad that I got Med. Caper with the submarine on front because that pic of Dirk in the sketch is how I did and still do picture him. It was like trying to reread The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice and I couldn't get Tom Cruise out of my head as LeStat, it drove me insane.
Foss Gly - October 25, 2004 11:27 PM (GMT)
So what was the actual answer??
DirkPitt - October 26, 2004 10:48 AM (GMT)
Nick got it right, it was squeezing through the iron barred grate in Med Caper.
Cheers ... p:

Now that I look at it closely, that REALLY does look like the scene in the book.. <_<

As an addendum, this sketch is from my collection. It was done by Thomas Yeates based on my detailed description of the Med Caper scene at the San Diego Comic Con a few years ago. I have it framed in my hallway. It also appeared on the cover of Clive Cussler Collector's Society "Sea Dweller" newsletter. The Sea Dweller is available only to CCCS members. I maintain all rights to this image.

Thanks to drxbuddy, I have a copy of that sketch, signed by Clive, hanging in my office.

Rob G and Dave...that is a nice sketch w:
oswalder - February 13, 2005 10:51 PM (GMT)
I always imagined the gate to be vertical, like a door. Hmm. Nice sketch though!
Giordino13 - March 19, 2005 04:52 PM (GMT)
That sure is an incredible sketch!! I'm amazed p:
Aaron James - November 16, 2005 09:52 PM (GMT)
That is a very good sketch. It helps convey the agony Cussler intended to imply there. Keep it up.
loren1 - November 18, 2005 12:51 PM (GMT)
Awesome sketch. Thanks for sharing. th: I too thought that the bars were vertical. I went back over the passage in the book and could not find anything to say it was. Though it did say it was a gate.
sharkluver22 - November 18, 2005 01:18 PM (GMT)
I love this picture and I loved this scene! The artist did a wonderful job! There is really not much that I can add that somebody else hasn't said though! loren1, I', with you. I pictured it like a gate and he was going sideways to get out...?
loren1 - November 20, 2005 10:19 PM (GMT)
That was the way I read it Shark. I went back and read it a few more times and couldn't see it any other way.
sharkluver22 - November 20, 2005 10:46 PM (GMT)
After having seen that picture though...I might be able to see it like that from now on!! Minus the intense look of utter pain etched onto his face!
notgudwithids - July 8, 2006 02:14 AM (GMT)
well as i recall it did have steps leading to it hence the image of it being a vertical gate im sure
