Title: Spin offs
Description: old friends on their own
Nick Kismet - October 8, 2004 08:28 PM (GMT)
When I heard about the Oregon Files, I didn't immediately remember the Cabrillo character from Flood Tide, but on further reflection it's a great concept--that is, spinning off a character from a previous Pitt novel for his/her own series.
So who else from Pitt's history would you like to see on their own? It might be interesting to follow the career of Eva Rojas and her team. for example. Or maybe Brian Shaw could come out of retirement to save the world one more time. Anyone care to spin a few scenarios?

I like the idea of Brian Shaw with his own stories. And how about one of the bad guys who have not been killed off. p:

th: Interesting idea.
How about Hiram Yaegar? Nah, he couldn't do an adventure like DP or KA. How about 'The Sandecker Files: Unusual Maritime and Oceanographic Mysteries and Phenonmenons'. Kinda long....

Actually, who to say there couldn't be a hiram Yeager story? The right writer, a good story, I'd definately read it. The same goes for Rudi Gunn, or even St. Julien Perlmutte. Who knows? The Trouts from the Austin series could also make good spin-off adventures.

How about following the Wolf family from the fall of the third Reich to Atlantis Found

Here's a Hiram Yaeger story line:
Bad guys, seeking information from the expansive NUMA computer system...or perhaps wanting Yaeger to pull off the ultimate computer robbery...take the NUMA headquarters building by storm (think Die Hard) and it's up to Hiram and the NUMA computer to save the day using their combined wit, real and virtual, to stay one step ahead of the bad guys.
I'll leave that one to you, Hiram, since you seem to have an affinity for the character. I'm already cooking up a Brian Shaw story that will, I promise, knock your socks off.

well start posting it Nick...I'd love to read it.

Oooooh....
Sorry, but I never let people see the work in progress. Besides, it's still in the larval stage. It will have to be a lot more substantial before I even consider letting anyone peek.

The Wolf family would be a hoot!!!! p: And how about the family in White death. They were very scary!!!! That family goes back millennia!!!! p: I like Hiram Yaeger in a Die hard type story too!!!! th:

1. The Lives of Leigh Hunt, with a sci-fi spin, as he dies each time, and wake up in another adventure. (Or actually get “beamed” before he dies). ;)
What about the women?
Julia Lee (Flood tide), and her adventures as agent of the US immigration and Naturalisation Service.
Lily Sharp (Treasure), could run into some evil-minded people doing here anthropological research
I like the idea of Brian Shaw. Teamed with Heidi Milligan, one can come up with some pretty good stories!!
Maeve Fletchers kids. (Interesting that the two women in Dirk’s life, who died, had twins. Although Maeve’s weren’t his)

I love the Leigh Hunt idea, and most of the others are pretty cool too.
What was the name of the reporter in Atlantis Found that was on the ship during the U-boat attack? I always thought she was an underutilized presence. I'm too lazy to go get the book from my shelf, and I'm already invested in my Brian Shaw story (I'll break my rule and post part of chapter 1 later, just to give you an idea of what I'm up to) but I still love all these ideas.
One thing I'm really looking for is a way to "forget about" NUMA and the traditional cast of characters. I suppose Perlmutter could carry a mystery on his own (sort of a nautical Nero Wolfe) but what I loved about Cabrillo was that he was just a minor character who has a life of adventure completely independent from NUMA.
For you military fiction writers, how about the adventures of the UN Crisis Team--the guys that saved the day in Sahara. Again, too lazy to check the book for names, but I could see these guys jetting all over the planet, dropping into hot LZ's to rescue hostages or secure WMD's.

How about Perlmutter?
Julien would be someone I could read about :)

The world's greatest chefs are aboard a cruise ship that mysteriously vanishes and it's up to St. Julien Perlmutter, drawing upon the combined resources of his expansive nautical database and his gourmet prowess, to find them, or risk forever losing the world's best recipes.

  That would be great!!! th:
I might work on a Hiramyaegar story. Thanks for the idea!
tonym5 - October 10, 2004 11:27 PM (GMT)
How about Leigh Hunt as a time traveler whose swiss cheesed memory keeps him leaping about time with different peoples identity and Hiram Yaeger as his control or contact keeping in touch as a hologram. And they use Max and St. Julien for information on different subjects. Leaping about time fighting the Wolf and the Fauchard families at different time periods throughout human history. p:

I wouldn't mind tackling a Julia Lee ( Flood Tide ) story but one that intrigue's me is doing a Loren story, my background in politics, I think I could spin a interesting story. yike:
