Apparently there are some sunken canal boats, canal schooners and a steamboat and others that sank in the 19th century in Lake Champlain that is the border between New York and Vermont. The steamboat's name is Phoenix. for more information on these historical wrecks check out the lake champlain maritime museum website. www.lcmm.org Maybe there's a story with the steamboat that sank in 1819. b:
My curiosity won and I had to read a bit more, and this is what I found:
This Lake "may contain the most important collection of wooden shipwrecks in North America"
The importance of the Phoenix is that it is the oldest known surviving steamboat hull in the world. In 1819 the boat was found to be on fire. Hmm tony5, that could make an interesting story. The boat drifted on a shoal an burned to the waterline. The steam engines and boilers were recovered and placed in the new Phoenix II. Winter ice moved the discarded hull into 18-33 m of water.
Some reckon the fire was intentional, resulting from the rivalry between sailing and steam boat interests.

If anyone wants any info/brochures, I live near Lake Champlain. There's a few wrecks I'd love to dive on, but I'm not cert and I'm broke, so its not gonna happen.
