Title: The Missing Vortex Pages contest
Description: a proposal for a friendly competition
Nick Kismet - October 13, 2004 04:11 PM (GMT)
How about a friendly little writing competition to explain the famous "When did Dirk and Summer do the deed?" conundrum. Ideally, the winning entry would take the form of an excerpt of the original novel, as though it was left in the editing room. The grand prize would be satisfaction of knowing that the mystery has a plausible solution (unless someone wants to put up a Doxa watch or the keys to Pitt's Talbot Lago.)
If anyone else is up for this, please talk about it here for a while before posting anything. In the interest of fairness and creativity, it would probably be better if we don't make all the ideas public in advance. We would also need to figure out who is going to judge. Anyway I'd love to hear some thoughts on this general concept.

I like this idea th:
I wanna be a judge as I'm no writer ;)
Nick Kismet - October 13, 2004 04:22 PM (GMT)
You've certainly got the credentials as a Forum administrator.
I've got a couple stories in a Tomb Raider competition, and they have about a dozen judges, and some pretty extensive rules. We obviously don't need all that, but it wouldn't hurt for our prospective judges to think about how this contest (if it happens) ought to be run. Since I might be entering something  I probably should minimize my interference. Anyone else looking to judge this?
DirkPitt - October 13, 2004 04:43 PM (GMT)
ok, I'm up for judging. th:
Since Clive confessed he "goofed" in regards to the "immaculate conception" of Dirk jr. and Summer in his speech in Washington recently, maybe we can pass the winning explanation onto Clive. If the winning entry is plausible enough, maybe he'll use it in a later novel to appease die-hard fans.
My suggestion for the winner's prize is a that the winning entry should be personally emailed to Clive Cussler
Cheers ... p:

personal attention from the Grand Master himself...now that would be a prize
this deserves a banner ad
Mostly Heep - October 13, 2004 05:01 PM (GMT)
Alright I'm in.
I'll give it a shot.
Foss Gly - October 13, 2004 06:15 PM (GMT)
I'm up for judging the contest. I don't think I could come up with something plausable...
Looking forward to what some can cook up, though.
And we should probably keep this rated PG, right? :P

well, you all are the judges (though Foss, come on...you're one of the heavy hitters in the writing dept.) but as to the PG rating...I would say it should be in keeping with the tone set by CC himself. It doesn't have to be romance novel graphic, but let's face it, there's only one way to make a baby (or is there?--maniacal laughter.)
hiramyaegar - October 13, 2004 08:41 PM (GMT)
I can't really think of a good idea (brain fart!), but I'd be more than willing to judge.
Nick - what Tomb Raider competition are you talking about?

Not you too, Hiram....just mull it over. I'm sure you can come up with something
Here's the Tomb Raider page with the contest. If you're going to contribute, you've got about 24 hours before it closes. But I invite you to check out my stories and say glowing things about them.

Nick Kismet - October 15, 2004 05:15 AM (GMT)

hiramyaegar - October 15, 2004 07:55 PM (GMT)

This sounds quite fun, when is the deadline to submit?
Nick Kismet - December 11, 2004 09:32 PM (GMT)
I don't think the details of the contest have completely materialized, but I think its safe to say the final deadline is a good ways off. We only have two entries so far
