This is the book where I think Clive brought it all together for the first time.He has admitted that it is his best plot.It is also the only CC book that took three years to be released,because of problems with publishers and obviously the time was well spent making a very tight book.
The second book to have a prologue based on actual events.The Empress of Ireland.The first appearance of everyones favorite villian.Mr. Gly.The first book to be partially based in Canada.The first to have some of the story based on a real life NUMA expedition.The Manhatten Limited/The lost locomotive of Kiowa Creek.
Everything about this book is great.In my mind it is tied for first with Cyclops out of the second well defined period of books. RTT,V03,NP,D6,C,D,T.

I give it a 10 out of 10.

Night Probe is a great book on many levels, not the least of which is the guest appearance by a famed suave super-spy...oh, what was his name? Seriously, Cussler's Shaw is more credible than the James Bond continuation series written by John Gardiner and WAY better than the most recent contributions by Raymond Benson. Unfortunately, I think the Shaw thing is also kind of a gimmick--a great one, but nevertheless a gimmick. I guess I have a love-hate reaction to this one, but it only cost .5 in my book. NightProbe 9.5.

Night Probe also gets Pitt back into the spotlight a little more, and features lots of marine salvage which has always kind of been the hallmark of the series. I would however take issue with Heep's inclusion of Cyclops and Treasue in the 2nd period. I really feel like Cyclops was the first book of a third period, one in which Pitt was once more the focal character, and the audacious plots multiplied out of control. More about that when the time comes, but first...on to Deep Six!

I loved Night Probe. Obviously because of the Empress of Ireland but secondly because Sea Hunters was the first Cussler book I read so knowing that the Train was real also was a bonus. Foss Gly was a great introduction because I just wanted to stand over him with a gun and scream "Are you dead YET?????" I finished reading the book and jumped into Deep Six that same night because I didn't want the adrenaline (sp?) rush to stop. 10-10 for me

The introduction of my namesake was one of many highlights in this great novel. The historical backstory is especially intruiging, and the novel concludes with the new "United States of Canada", a plot device that I wish Clive had used again.
The Canadian political intruige was perhaps my favorite 'sub-plot', and we got to see how truly diabolical Gly could be.
As a Canuck, I was glad to see a lot of the book play out in Canada (I liked White Death for much the same reason). It's nice to have a Pitt adventure hit 'close to home', so to speak.
Not my favorite novel, but right up there.

I began reading Dr. C with Night Probe in 1982. Then after I left the Army and came back home in October of that year I bought Pacific Vortex. And immediately bought the early books right way at the book fair in November of that year. Night Probe is most definitely a 10 out of 10. And as for periods in Dr. C's writing I would say that Night Probe for me stood between the first group of books and the second. Although I do think the plot of Dragon was typical of many novels that involved some nazi connection of sorts. After that Dr. C began to step it up with more fantastical stories that he pulled off with style.

I will never get tired of reeading Night Probe! again and again and again. 10+

I have read this book so many times I've actually worn out two copies. This book grabs you from the beginnig to the end. A wonderfully threaded plot and great characters. I give it a solid 10

What can I say I very interesting book. I thought the storyline was impectable from CC. The actions was exhilirating and dear old Foss was his usual self.

A 9. The plot was kinda hard to follow at times, in my opinion. But it did have a great storyline and a heck of an ending. It brings up possibilities. What were to happen if Canada and the US formed one country????

Yes ... in some ways this book gave me more to ponder and think about than maybe any other in the series ...

WOOO!!! Maybe as good as Shock Wave... A great reading experience. It has romance,adventure and politics. The James Bond--oops--Brian Shaw twist is awesome, even Pitt is more energitic. One of the best performance of C.C. A real must read!

The idea of Canada being part of the U.S....brilliant!! A 9.8 out of 10

After reading "Sahara" again a few months ago (refresh the old grey cells before the Movie), I looked for our copy of "Night Probe" and I think it's lost in my daughter's black hole bedroom!!! :unsure:

So, I down-loaded a PalmReader copy V1.1 and read it with my Palm T3!!! :P After I finished reading Night Probe again, ... I agree with the 9.8 to 10 / 10 ratings!!! th:

This is my favorite Pitt book so far. I started reading them in order, and of all I have read, I like this one the best.

Gly is just a wonderful villain, he better come back and come back often.

I like the mystery, and I like plot. The way it ended is weird to me - why would he end it that the U.S. gets the treaty? I mean, there is no way that happened in real like, we all know we are two different countries now - why end it that way?

But this book kept me guessing. And the political intigue, the assassination attempts, the train mystery, the supporting characters. And great Al and Pitt.

So far, my favorite.

I'm jumping on the 9+ bandwagon !!

In regards to Foss gly.... I thought he was killed. Or am I going to get a surprise later on. I've read most of the DP books. I'm missing the books between NP and Treasure, which I'm starting the next one now.

Yes, poor misunderstood Foss Gly was indeed killed off in Cyclops. One of the things I would have liked in the Pitt books would have been a 'running villain', one who shows up from time to time. Gly almost fit the bill, I would have loved to have seen him return in more than one repeat showing.

Perhaps he survived long enough to spawn a Foss Gly Jr. who will get his skull bashed in by a pipe-wrench wielding Dirk Jr. :lol:

Just finished Night Probe last night (stayed up to 2:30 am) and it was freaking awesome. I was a little put off when I started because I thought there were too many characters going on but once the book got going the characters cleared up and the book took off. It probably took me 3 - 4 days to get started but once I got going I finished it VERY quick.

It's amazing how each book gets better than the one before it.

I have to say that Night Probe is my favorite book of CC, I live in Canada and also one of my undergraduate degrees is a B.A. in Canadian Political Science/Constitutional Law. So Night Probe was very interesting, when Clive wrote it in the early seventies he must have been inspired by the FLQ crisis(Canadian Terrorists) and the kidnap of British Trade Commissioner James Cross and the kidnap and murder of Vice-Premier and Minister of Labour of the province of Quebec, Pierre Laporte. Canada was then placed under the War Measures Act for a while where not only the few FLQ people were arrested but also other known criminals were arrested with no regard to rights or Habeas corpus, Its kind of like a suspension of all rights for a period to help the country survive. Clive doesn't pay to much attention to the fact that Canada was and still is Constitutional Monarchy(1867 British North America Act) that isn't property of the British empire but hey, we still require the consent of the queen via her/his representative in Canada the Governor General for mostly rubber stamping of certain laws and acts so he isn't that far off. But it wouldn't be such an interesting story as to why the urgency of the document as Quebec decides to succeed if he stuck to the actual facts, I love it.

This is an awesome story including the idea of "Manifest Destiny" where the western provinces would become part of the US, not my preference as a Canadian living in Oil Rich Alberta, which by the way is one of the provinces ignored when Clive outlays the Succession and joining of the US that the provinces might consider. Oh well, maybe he will do a story where Dirk and Al defend the Oil Sand processing in Alberta one day! All in All one of my very favorites!


Also the idea of energy and the crisis and need for it is so relevant in today's world!

So in My books this is a 10/10 as it hits close to home and like so many other CC books its not short on intellectual action.

This is the first Cussler book I read back in the olden days.( late 70's, early 80's) It's still my favorite!!!
I haven't miss a new cussler book since. :lol:

I have read about 6 CC books so far, The Mediterranean Caper, Inca Gold, Atlantis Found(my favorite another 10/10), Night Probe, IceBerg, and Treasure of Khan. So I am a relative new comer I guess....

All of the books so far are far and away better than any other action adventure novels I have read (Tedd Bell, Ian Flemming, even Oliver North's stuff Ha Ha).

I am just starting on Vixen 03... I will try and post in the book reviews area on the ones I have read as soon as I can....

I think that the Israeli Trade Council was targeted due to the activities at the time of Bourassa(Premiere of Quebec) being on a trade mission. Even though Canada is bilingual and considers Quebec just as important piece as any other province, the people of Quebec often have followed people(leaders) who offer independence(ranging from full succession to other forms of self rule) but all in all the political structure of Quebec has always wanted to perform their own foreign trade relations, not possible under the BNA act 1867 and The Canadian Constitution 1982, its federal jurisdiction. In fact on a federal level there was a split in the 1990's of our PC(Progressive Conservative party, sort of like Republicans) and a party called the Bloc Quebecois was formed, once again prompting Quebec to look towards succession. The very odd and sad thing about it was that not to long after starting this party with the mandate to break up the country the very popular leader, Lucien Bouchard was stricken with flesh eating disease and had to have his leg amputated and came very close to dying..... major Canadian Drama/conspiracy... the Bloc is still around today but has taken a different stance in Canadian politics and has pretty much given up on breaking up the country.

Now if I could just afford that Doxa watch......
