Title: NUMA Federal Agency?

sherlockfan - March 4, 2004 02:31 PM (GMT)
Has anyone heard about this? http://www.petitiononline.com/numafed/petition.html
And who is the guy who started this - Kelvin Nguyen? I wonder if Mr. Cussler knows about this.

Sherlockfan,
Its good to have the sleuth aboard. I for one, will stay tuned to see what other tidbits you can pull from the net. As far as the new petition is concerned...I had not seen it but now that I have...Im not sure what to think. ..LOL . Anyway, welcome to the site....good to have you here.
Take care
Mike

sherlockfan - March 4, 2004 03:09 PM (GMT)
LOL, it wasn't hard to find. It's on the alt.fan.dirk-pitt newsgroup:

jet_doctor - March 4, 2004 05:29 PM (GMT)
He states on the petition that you can find more info on numa.net. I went there and cannot find a thing so I don't know where he's getting his info from. I asked him, on the SSBB, to provide a direct link where this supposed info is on the numa website.

NUMA_Diver - March 4, 2004 06:21 PM (GMT)
I am not happy with his wording of that....I believe he was trying to state that you can find more info on NUMA in general at their site but it was worded wrong. Of course I may be wrong....lol. Dr Cussler does not support this in any way...I believe it is the brainchild of this Kelvin Nguyen.
Hope that helps
Mike

And I know for a fact that that was never referenced in any NUMA.net content. Since I've read every bit of it when I redid the site.

Welcome sherlockfan !!

Happy Hunting, sherlockfan !!

robpgreer,

Thanks for clearing that up !

The petition states:

QUOTE
NUMA(The National Underwater and Marine Agency), founded in 1979 by Dr. Clive Cussler, should become a federal agency. Since there is no one U.S government agency in charge of maritime affairs and research, all those agencys should be merged into this new agency. Find more information on NUMA at www.numa.net.

Whereas NUMA is described as:
QUOTE
a 501C3 non-profit, volunteer foundation dedicated to preserving our maritime heritage through the discovery, archaeological survey and conservation of shipwreck artifacts.

I really can't see how this can be anything more than a waste of time (And I can't see Congresswoman Pitt voting for it!). Perhaps he's been on too much Blue Agave recently!

regards,

Martyn

Billy Yuma - I agree with you. ;)

kujo54 - March 14, 2004 01:53 PM (GMT)
The LAST thing NUMA needs is for the government to get involved. All they'd do
is turn it into a giant bureaucracy and nothing would get done. Even if they did
manage to find an historic site, George W. would want to drill for oil.

What was this Nguyen thinking? The only reason NUMA works as a government agency in the books is because it's FICTION. Geez!

Yes i think that it would be silly to make NUMA a government agency . I dont know that much about the way that that stuff is run in the US but from what i've seen it would probably corrupt the whole reason for NUMA to exist . :)

Nic0demus - March 21, 2004 11:09 PM (GMT)
But on becoming a federal agency, wouldn't NUMA become the recipient of federal funding?

jet_doctor - March 22, 2004 05:32 AM (GMT)
Although it would seem great to receive the extra funding, there would be a big price to pay with receiving federal funding - Clive would lose most control over his own Agency and the government would most likely try to dictate everything they do. He would never go for that.

Nic0demus - March 23, 2004 04:02 AM (GMT)
Excellent point, Jet. I still would like Clive to retain some sort of say in the running of his own brainchild...

3 signatures total? <_<

Yes...and federal oversite... most likely not what Clive had in mind :)

Buffarillo - May 1, 2004 06:32 AM (GMT)
If NUMA wants federal funding they could always apply for a grant..........but then, that paperwork is bureaucracy at its best.......believe me, I know! I work for the government!!!!

As far as I'm concerned if it isn't broke don't fix it.

NUMA should be left as it is a non-for-profit organization. Let funds be raised by donations and those wanting to partake in searches. (ie. universities, museums etc)

At the NUMA site you purchase items and it is considered a donation. So far I think I've made close to $200 CND in donations. I also know that my donation goes towards NUMA projects & that "Uncle Sam" isn't getting his portion.

All I have to say is Leave NUMA alone. It's been running fine all of this time...don't mess with a good thing.

tonym5 - May 28, 2004 05:57 AM (GMT)
be nice if some rich people like bill gates who can spare a million or billion dollars for our dear NUMA :)

I think he's saying that you can find more on info on NUMA at the NUMA website.

I was thinking, for one of my Boy Scout merit badges, I have to write a letter to my Congressman, so I might write about making NUMA a Federal agency.

Numa doesn't need to be part of the goverment. It would only make it like the rest of the goverment. WASTEFUL! Clive does a better service to the history of the seas than any one. Leave him alone. t:

Actually instead of becoming a federal agency several multi-billionaires could spare $1 billion apiece to create an superfund for NUMA. Thus NUMA could draw down so much money per year from the superfund to pay for their explorations, administration, etc..... :)

Ksunami - September 13, 2004 09:04 PM (GMT)
What about NOAA? They might not have the adventures that NUMA in the books do, but they do have the basic idea. A friend of mine was interning with them this summer and went out with them when they were recording the topography of the oceans floor and found an undocumented shipwreck.

They have their own divers, scientist, ect and they actually have their own military that is under the Department of Commerce not the Department of Defense.

Seems to me that the government already has their version of NUMA. Not sure if they have a job as Director of Operations, though it would be cool.

th: Good idea. I doubt it though. I sure the NUMA crew would appreciate even a million, or even a few thousand.

Heavy - September 28, 2004 07:14 PM (GMT)
This entire concept is absurd.

Besides, ever heard of NOAA?

http://www.noaa.gov/

Duh.

j2pphillips - October 2, 2004 05:54 AM (GMT)
I do believe that if Clive had wanted NUMA to be a government agency he would have done so when he created his brainchild back in 1979.
This guy would have gotten a lot further or not if he had Talked to Clive. He may think he is doing some good but as Buffarillo pointed out the " paperwork alone"
Like Buffarillo I too have worked in government ( Canadian ) trust me its not worth the headache.
