Title: To live in History
Sandecker Fan - November 3, 2004 01:04 AM (GMT)
If it were possible to spend a month living in any time period of history which time would you choose? You would just be an observer and not able to affect the outcomes of the period. You would just be there to witness events firsthand that you have only heard or read about?

Hmm... This is interesting Sean.
I would pick WWII (1939-1945)
Dates I would check out:
December 7th 1941
June 6th 1944
July 29th 1945
May 6th 1937
May 7th 1915
May 29th 1914
May 27th 1941
April 14th 1912
September 2nd 1945
December 6th 1917
December 24th 1944
Thats all I can think of now...

Interesting topic SandeckerFan. If I'm just observing I think it might be fun to go back and spend a month with the Dinosaurs. Ride a T-Rex or two. Maybe during the time when the Australopithecenes were alive. They were our early non-human ancestors (think "Lucy" if you're at all familiar with biological archaeology). Basically any time about which we're trying to find more info from unreliable sources I'd be interested in going to.

I thought about this a couple of times before. I'd like to go back to the mid fifties, while my parents were still children, and see what my town ws like back then. Perhaps meet my parents, though not quite with the results from Back To The Future.
My historical intrest runs locally. I'd also like to see my hometown back in the late 1800's, during it's boom as a shipping port. Interesting to me, at least.

I've seen a painting of my hometown from the late 1800s... nothing but farmland. Now it's the 'burbs. It was still farmland for the most part when my dad grew up down the street from where we live now. It would be so WEIRD to watch your world transform like that over 20 years or so.

I'd like to go back to Dallas on the 22nd november 1963.
I'd also like to go back to see who sculpted the Sphinx.
and lets not forget Atlantis ;)

There are so many times I would like to see from the past. I think I would like to go to England in the time of Elizabeth the first and the civil war. The list could go on forever. w:

-Rome 1500 years ago
-Pharoes some time ago ;)
-Middle Ages in Europe in a claustral
-Highlands in Ireland
-sometimes in a cave 10000 years ago ;)
Dagaz - November 3, 2004 09:08 PM (GMT)
I'll have to think about that one and let you know
Sandecker Fan - November 3, 2004 11:05 PM (GMT)
I have talked with my wife before and that's why I decided to post it. I thought it would be interesting to see other peoples take on this. I would like to spend some time in the Depression and also I would like to go back and attend the Sermon on the Mount. To spend time with Jesus in his last days would be incredible.

I would love to meet Thomas Jefferson and see who really shot JFK at the knoll. And if i could change history i would go back to the old west and buy land or something and leave the fortune for myself in the present. Would like to meet Teddy Roosevelt, Elvis Presley,Thomas Edison, and some actresses in the 1960s when they were young and have passionate affairs

I would have liked to have been in Philadelphia in July of 1776 and see the Declaration of Independance signed. I also would have liked to have been around during April of A.D. 33.
bulletbob52 - November 8, 2004 11:26 PM (GMT)
Would like to have been there to see Einstein discover the Theory of relativity.
tonym5 - November 8, 2004 11:38 PM (GMT)
Would love to be around the time period 1865-1929 when many inventions were developed and watch the industrialization of the country and buy stocks in certain companies. And meet many of the inventors and the republican party power brokers of the time. I could do a lot of research meeting them for the novel I am working on. w:

Wow this is tough!! Just a few I would love to live in Salem, MA during the witch trials (I know they would have burned me) and also during the time of Thoreau, Emerson and Walt Whitman.
Also- 1500-1600's during the time of the Spanish Armadas. I would love to have been on the ships and sailed the high seas (yes scurvy, battles and gold) all the good with the bad and buried in Port Royal under the force of the hurricane. p:
Lastly- I would love to have been old enough to really experience the Hippie generation.

Great question! The first thing that came to my mind was August 1969, upstate New York, Yaskers Farm - that's right, WOODSTOCK! I'd love to see some of the 'classic' rockers as youngsters: Hendrix, the Who, Joe Cocker, just to name a few. The summer of peace and love, sex, drugs and Rock-n-Roll!
The second time that came to mind is the time just before and during the crucifiction of Christ. I'd love to see first-hand just what happened.
The third that came to mind is ancient Greece, I'd love to meet with Plato and discuss his information concerning Atlantis.
Finally, the dinosaur age - 65 million years ago, about 29 days before the meteor that caused the demise of the dinosaurs.

I have a few eras I wouldn't mind setting the Way Back machine for.
Early Feb 1964 New York City with a lot of cash.
Dec 8th 1980 with the knowledge of what will happen that night and the ability to change it.
Sherwood Forest in the time of Robin Hood
500 AD the time of Merlin and Arthur

Oh yeah, got 1 more: September 1913, Brookline MA.
The 1913 US Open golf tournament, called by many the greatest match play golf tournament ever. Harry Vardon, the best golfer in the world at the time, versus Francis Ouimet, a 20 year old amateur who grew up literally across the street from the club where the tourney was played. Ouimet had a 12 year old kid as his caddy, who had to dodge a truant officer to get to the golf course! As a golfer I would have loved to see that match!!

Another one that I`d be interested in would be traveling with Lewis & Clark`s Corps of Discovery. Despite the hardships it would have been worth it to see the country in its pristine state before the westward movement of settlers. w:

Something to think about anytime, anywhere-
1)Riding with Attila the Hun as he swept across Eurasia
2)Getting to know the Aztec nation.
3)The Phoenicians when they were the great sea power
4)Egypt during the reign of Ramses the Great-but I've already been there j:

Hmm, I was about to ask what happened on Dec 8th, 1980 (it was about 13 months before my time, and I'm not a Beatles fan), but I looked it up instead.

For me, I would want to have been able to observe the time of Billy The Kid...the American West (the only time I ever paid attention in History..and was allowed to participate in class ;) )
