Edmonton, AL (CP) - It only took six seconds and the Edmonton Oilers won thier first ever postseason overtime game. With the drop of the puck to begin OT the Oilers had a designed play and it worked to a tee.
If the Oilers won the draw it was supposed to be sent back to the defense and they were to fire it in on a hard dump around. Robyn Regehr recieved the puck from Andrew Brunette after the draw and rimmed it around the side boards. Taking off after the faceoff was Mike Knuble. He found the puck along the boards and shot it low stick side on Vezina Candidate Sean Burke. GOAL! The biggest in Oilers history.
The goal sends the Oilers into another area of unchartered waters for a team that GM David Foiles says has the perfect balance of age, speed, and ability.
"We have gol scorers, big hitters, shut down defensman. Youth and veterans mix well on this team." Foiles said after the seies was over. "We're a tough team to play against." He added.
The Stars led the game 2-0 after two power play goals. The Oilers got on the board midway through the second period on a goal by Teemu Selanne. Dallas took a 3-1 led in the third on a early goal by Jason Smith.
When the Stars took the 3-1 led in the third, Oilers coach Jim Schoenfeld called a time out to settle down his players. It took awhile for the Oilers to respond but at 17:12, Petr Cajanek beat Burke high blockerside to give the Oilers hope of a comeback.
Comeback indeed. The Oilers knowing they wanted to close the series out that night scored 21 seconds later to knot the game at three on a goal by series MVP Selanne. The game then headed to OT where Knuble ended it quickly.
In short fashion the Oilers came from behind and finished off the more experienced Stars to win the series 4-1.
Oil Drops: Lyle Odelin was suspended by the league for two games of the playoffs. It is now known if Ivan Majesky or Daniel Tjarnqvist will take his spot in the lineup. JP Dumont only registered 9 minutes of playing time due to the flu, but is expected to suit up for Game 1 of Round 2 whenever that gets underway.
