Title: Coral Browne stories
Description: Anecdotes about Coral Browne

Coral Browne was famous throughout the theatre world for her raunchy wit and her lightning fast ability to give a pithy and usually hilarious reply. Any additions to my already good collection would be appreciated.

Commenting on the affair between fellow actors Sir Godfrey Tearle and Jill Bennett she said: "I could never see what he saw in her, until I watched her eat corn-on-the-cob at Le Caprice!"

When the amputee gossip writer Radie Harris threatened to sue her, Coral's retort was "She hasn't a leg to stand on!"

When an effemanite optician and fan refused to take any money from her for repairing her glasses she remarked to her friend as she was departing the shop: "Silly c**t, I was going to give him enough to buy himself a woman - not that he'd know what to do with her!"

Alan Bennett's Diaries have some wonderful Coral stories. One involved her coming out of a church in central London when one of her friends spotted her and launched into a gossipy story. Coral's unholy response was "Not now! Can't you see I'm in a fucking state of grace?"

Classic Coral Browne. I'm a long time fan of Joan Rivers and only found out she was Coral Browne's best friend about 2 years ago, after I read Victoria Price's book for research for a Vincent Price website. They're a perfect match for each other. It follows that I'd become a Coral Browne fan.

This isn't a very active site but it should become one after release of my book "Another Coral Browne Story" to be published in June 2006 by New Holland (Aust) Pty Limited. I am hoping for an almost simultaneous launch of the book in the U.K. Barbara Angell.
