Title: There and Back Again
Description: Sean's book

anyone read it? what did you think of it?
I got it for christmas... and i did think some of it was good... but when my friend got it for me she was expecting it to be a story about lord of the rings, and it wasnt- really. i mean some of it was, but there was an awful lot about other films, and also an awful lot of sean being ungrateful for all he had been given. i would have given anything to be involved in any way on the whole lotr project, and yet sean complained when he was being paid to act as one of the main characters that no one apprichiated him.
anyway, did anyone else have opinions on it? ( i really just felt like adding a topic...)

It sounded like an interesting book after I saw a documentary with Sean talking about it awhile ago, and I wanted to get it... But unfortunately, I couldnt find it anywhere. Wasnt in any bookstores i went to or anything. So the search continues. Actually, I've wasted the money I had for it already. I can never help spending when things are tempting, it becomes a problem.
Your lucky you have it. Sounds...interesting... Was he complaining about not being appreciated on lotr, or other movies? as it could've been his character. Everyone has opinions, but i'll have to read it first.

i think it was generally all films... but as sam he didnt feel that enough of his character was put across on screen. frodo was the hero, sam was the little tag along- despite being the one who always had to pick up the pieces...
but i think thats the way tolkien wrote it, and thats the way i like it. because if you have too many main characters then it all becomes confuzzled, and you dont really get to know the characters properly... but i dont know.
i think it's worth reading once, but not really worth buying (actually i have a signed copy so im keeping it...) but yeah, if you can borrow it from a friend/library till you've seen what its like. you just might find it a little dissapointing, thats all.

True, Tolkien did write Sam as the tag-along loyal servant/ sidekick, and that’s how it should be. Though, and I suppose this could be just my opinion, but Sam was brought a little more from that idea than in the books. He was more friend than servant, he wasn’t all completely selfless, he had his big moments (my opinion again, but Frodo on the other hand, didn’t! Not really.) All in all, he was honoured a lot more in some ways, and Sean should be content with that… Besides, so many people have had such a huge improved impression of Sam, and so many people love him now since rotk, what on earth has Sean got to complain about?!
Anyway, I’ll see if I can find it anywhere and read it… then I'll form an opinion B)

:rosieandsamkiss: Time to gloat. I went to forbidden planet just after/the day it came out. It was a decision for the night before between me and my best friend. We got there and looked round and then I saw the poster; Sean Astin was going to be in that day signing copies of his book :D What's a girl to do but line up for 3 hours in the cold to get it signed. My best friend was right there beside me waiting , completely bored.
Ithink it's a good book. His actually honest in it was is great, he amites when he gets upset over something abnd it was a really petty thing to do.

ahh cool, yeah i had plans to do that, but i had to go to school and well i couldnt get there, which was a shame but i got to met sean may 2005 - which was awesome - a really lovely guy, very friendly and very nice to me and my friend who was quite mad when we met him!! hehe!!!
i did like the book, very differen to what i expected, i liked his honesty, and how her felt about sam and his relationship with his children - congrats to them on their new baby girl too !!!

You guys are all so lucky. You know, as far as I know, none of the actors have come down here for book signings or appearances at all :crying: I'm hoping a petition from some of us Aussies pitched to New Line might make them decide to come here once or twice. I'd love to attend a book signing. Well, even if it involves hours of waiting. Was there that many people?
I heard he was a nice guy too. Did you guys get to talk to him much?
I did eventually read the book, and I finished it a fair while ago too. And actually, I thought it was pretty good. I don't think he actually outright complained about his character at all, and he gave a nice, honest account of things, even if it was mixed with heaps of stuff about movies he was in and such.

There are book signings here the rare times at bookstores and such, but often, they're obscure authors that I haven't really heard of or read the books of, so not too exciting. Robin Hobb was one of the people that did a book signing the day HP 5 came out, I remember. I've half-read some of her books, but not completely...
Gawd I have so many books in line to read too. I've got this whole page filled with a listing of all these books that I need to dig up and read... sometime... I'm still reading Unfinished Tales (I started at the start of the year. Or was it last year? Can't remember)... I read heaps, then my sis goes and loses it, then my mum misplaces it, then I start reading five books at the same time, and now it's locked in a cupboard somewhere that I can't get! Poor, unfortunate book *sniffs*
