Title: Alatar the Blue
Description: Athéniel's character ;)

Athéniel Egleriannen - April 18, 2006 12:01 PM (GMT)
--Alatar the Blue (Morinehtar)--

Race~ Of the Maiar, and last and youngest of the order of Istari.
He was the only one who chose to remain in the Fourth Age, to help build the world anew. Saruman met his death by his own design, while Gandalf returned to the West at the end of the Third Age, though of Radagast and Pallando (Romestamo)'s fate, he never knew.

Steed~ A grey stallion named Kasiar.

Family~
He has no direct relatives, being a Maia, though he had many close friends, whom he likened to his family. His companion, Pallando who came with him to Arda at the request of Oromë, Alatar had greatly loved and respected. But with Sauron's rising, he fell to the dark powers and became lost. After the departure of his old friend Mithrandir after the ending of the Third Age, he revives and befrends an Elf named Almárean, whom he later grew to love almost as if he were his gwador.* Their companionship taught him much about the meaning of love.

Past, Present, Future~
Alatar, along with four other Istari, were sent to Middle-earth by the Manwë, Varda, Oromë and Yavanna to answer to the threat of the darkening east. It is not known when he came into existence, except that in all of his early life, he had dwelt in Valinor amongst the great Valar. Their long estrangement caused him great grief.

With Pallando, his companion, he guarded the lands of the East from harm. Pallando abandoned him in his search for deeper meaning and glory, at a terrible price. Alatar watched as first Sauron enslaved him and drove him in mindlessness, then betrayed him as he intended to his other 'ally', Saruman. Both, bloodthrist for power and rule, believed they were the ally of a greater power, but in Sauron's eyes, he himself had been the only dark lord.

Alatar sought for permission to return to the Undying Lands, believing, at the loss of Pallando, that their foe was beyond them. Forced to remain, however, he did his best to protect the cities and townships entrusted in his charge, all the while searching for his friend and mentor, Mithrandir. After his close friend leaves to go over the sea, Alatar's renewed love for Arda and all it stood for drove him to stay on, well into the Fourth Age and beyond.

During that time, he stayed counseller to his close friend, King Elessar and Queen Arwen, later their son Aldarion, and their heirs in Minas Tirith, which became his long lasting home. He became the teacher and mentor of Aldarion, to whom he taught the skills of archery and swordfighting, even though in many of those later days, these skills were often refined for sport rather ran defence or war. He often wandered on journeys far and wide with Almárean, embarking with him on discoveries that spanned across time, until his friend departed many years later.
In time, over the years, Alatar's powers decrease and dwindle, but his wisdom and powess grows no less. Many centuries later, Alatar grows weary of the world and releases his hold on life. His spirit rejoins those of the Valar.

Appearance~
Alatar has a long length of white hair, which flows onto his shoulders. His robes are sea-blue, a constant reminder of the home which he forsook. He carries with him an old, wizened ebony staff, carved with intricate design and symbols. He fashioned it himself in his early days in Arda, and carries it merely as a man would his beloved sword though he no longer had any use for it, his reminder of both victories and bitter defeats and the age of darkness that gave origin to its birth. In the time of peace and prosperity that lasts, mostly, in the fourth age, he no longer finds use for it, and because of this, its power dwindles away, as he himself does.

Personality~
Alatar is a wise and clever man, and holds great esteem and appreciation for the profound wonders of Arda. Though elderly in terms of the inhabitants of Middle-earth in the Fourth Age (mostly men), he retains the vigour of youthfulness.
