Title: Bernard Hill in "Antigone"
Hobbity_Goose - April 28, 2005 06:48 PM (GMT)
Hello, i thought i should share this.. I had to watch "Antigone" the production which was recorded wayyyy back in 1986, and it starred Juliet Stevenson, John Shrapnel, Bernard Hill .. and more, directed by Don Taylor. But anyway, I mean that i had to watch it in our Theatre Studies/Drama lesson this term and i couldn't believe it when i saw the name: Bernard Hill, me and my friend went crazy and decided to watch it afterall instead of talking/doing other work, and i have to say he is a awesome actor... he was amazing in "Antigone" which is a play written by Sophocles and part of a trilogy, amongst "Oedipus the King" and "Oedipus at Colonus." the plays quite disturbing but i enjoyed watching Bernard Hill, he had such delivered a powerful performance and his stage presence was just as powerful... ahh.. thats the only works i've seen by him, and if there is any more out there please let me know, i really would like to see more movies/theatrical performaces by him...
thanks in advance!
love lucy xx

I have read "Oedipus the King" and "Antigone" in school before. When you watched "Antigone", what character did Bernard Hill play as? I just thought I would ask.

Bernard Hill played: The messenger, from Antigone!

I've read that play, is that the one where a man (Antigone? Or was it someone else?... I don't remember the name) gets doomed to murder his father and then marries his mother and becomes king? We'll be doing it in literature sometime sune in school. I didn't know there was a movie to it starring Bernard Hill, but it sounds hm, good despite the plot.

hey, the man who marries his mother and kills his father is called Oedipus... and before he realises its his mother he has married he has 4 children? cant remember how many!! and one of his daughters is called Antigone. its quite an odd plot line to say the least!! haha.. hmm.. yeah i've been studying greek theatre, otherwise i would never of read/seen it.. hmm it was good despite the storyline!!!

 Yeh, I know all that stuff now, since we're doing Antigone and Greek Tragedies at school too. I read Oedipus at the start of the year, so I didn't remember much about the names until I revisited it again. Yup, four children. Antigone, Ismene, Polynices and Eteocles. I picked up a version of the play one day at the library while doing lit. that had the script of the movie, and Bernard Hill was listed among the cast. We're actually watching some sort of video of Antigone, but I don't think it could be the one you're talking about because it seems so much more of a badly filmed stage production than a movie, not to mention the masks the chorus people wear

oh cool!! - found the script!! excellent
Err.. the production that i watched - the chorus did not wear masks but they were really weird - it was really funny the way they kept speaking in unison and moving in a particular way!! hehe ...

We are going to do the Theban plays at school this year so I will be getting the book soon. I dont know anything about it yet but it sounds um.. interesting  Is it worth a read?
