It's Trivia time!!
How much do you really know? Some of these are considerably easy...
1. Which members of the Fellowship have deceased parents?
2. What is Aragorn named while growing up in Rivendell, and what did his name mean?
3. What things do Aragorn bear that are a symbol of his heritage?
4. Saruman’s incantation in FotR to bring down Caradhras, ‘Nai yarvaxëa rasselya taltuva notto-carinnar’… what does it say?
5. What was Gondolin known as in High-Elven?
6. Who are Altariel and Teleporno?
7. Gandalf was once which Maia in ages long past before he was sent along with the other Istari to Middle-earth?
8. What are the names of the five Istari?
9. What gift was given by the Valar to the Half-Elven?
10. Which are the two most closely related races?
11. What caused the downfall of Númenor?
12. Where was the awakening of the Elves?
13. Who is the Eldest living being recounted in LotR? (I’m not sure on this myself…)
14. Where were the Palantír of old kept?
15. What was the name of the first dragon?
16. What did it imply if a hobbit’s name originally ended with a o?
17. Who made the prophecy that when the Tree died, the line of the kings would also perish?
18. Who was the captain of Doriath? (He has the same name as one of the rangers of Ithilien who were followers of Faramir)
19. The Dwarves were created by which Valar?
20. (And finally… an easy one…) The Argonath are resemblances of which two kings of old?
Once they’ve all been answered, the next lucky person gets to post the next twenty questions :) Put the question number you are answering before you answer so it doesn’t get confusing ;)
Edit: Ones that are in bold are answered, and ones in italic are half answered. Avoid repeating answers :yesnod:

2. Aragorn was named ‘Estel’ when he was young and the word was Quenya, meaning hope.
13. The two most closely related races were men and hobbits. Am I right?
I had to take some of the easy ones :D because I’m not sure of some of the others.
Hobbity_Goose - June 22, 2005 05:41 PM (GMT)

7. Saruman - i think thats right... hmmm

Lucy, ‘Aulë’ would have daeresis (not sure on the spelling of that) on the ë, because an accented e would be something like é. There are usually ways you can type the symbols out on keyboard by pressing combinations of keys, but otherwise, if you’re like me and don’t remember them, I’d just use word. You got the Dwarf question right ;) but other than that, sowwi, I don’t think the others are quite right :( Curunír is another of Saruman’s many names, just like Mithrandir is to Gandalf, and all in all, you mentioned only three of the five- they have lots of names, remember… but I daresay you’ll figure them out :) Anelith, I think those are pretty much right ;)

1.Which members of the Fellowship have deceased parents?
Frodo, his parents Drogo and Primula (I think that was their names) drown in a lake, right? No mention is made of Legolas’ mother, nor Gimli’s, both their fathers are alive when the fellowship started I believe. Uhm, Gandalf I don’t think had parents, did he? As for the rest of the Hobbits, the most I know is that Samwise’s father was alive during the fellowship.
2. What is Aragorn named while growing up in Rivendell, and what did his name mean?
Estel, and I think it meant ‘hope’ but I’m not sure.
3. What things do Aragorn bear that are a symbol of his heritage?
His ring? Other than that I have no idea, well besides Narsil.
5. What was Gondolin known as in High-Elven?
I want to say it was Ondolindë, but I’m not entirely sure.
6. Who are Altariel and Celeporno?
Just alternative names for Galadriel and Celeborn if I am right.
7. Gandalf was once which Maia in ages long past before he was sent along with the other Istari to Middle-earth?
Olorin? He has way too many names.
8. What are the names of the five Istari?
Ohh, I just saw this answer yesterday! Radagast, Gandalf, Saruman, Alatar and Pallando. If I hadn’t been researching yesterday I wouldn’t have even know there were five.
9. What gift was given by the Valar to the Half-Elven?
The choice between a mortal and immortal life, right?
11. What caused the downfall of Númenor?
Sauron gained the trust of the Last King of the Numenor’s and told him to sail to Aman, against the Valar and when the king set foot on Aman, it sunk beneath the waves.
13. Who is the Eldest living being recounted in LotR?
My guess would have to be Tom Bombadil, but it’s probably not right.
15. What was the name of the first dragon?
Glaurung
19. The Dwarves were created by which Valar?
Aulë
20. The Argonath are resemblances of which two kings of old?
Ilsidur, and Anarion?
King Bard - August 23, 2005 02:55 AM (GMT)
1. Frodo, Aragorn, and Borimir
4. I think it might mean something along the lines of "Awake foul Redhorn, pour down your rage on your enimy's heads."
14. Minas Ithil, Osgiliath, Minas Tirith, Isengard, Amon Sul, (I think) Fornost, and one or two other know were exactly.
16. The hobbit was male.
19. Aule
20. Ilsidur and Anarion

King Bard-- It depends on when in the timeline of LotR you see it, as Denethor dies during it, but I'll accept Boromir as one of them ;)
No. 4, pretty close for a vague meaning, but if you translate it, there's slightly more to it!
With the Palantír one, nope, not Fornost, but the other five are right. Two more ;)
All the others are right, but avoid repeating ones which have already been done ^_^
Erelith-- yay, almost all right! With no. 1, you missed someone. King Bard got it, though. There's more to no.3, but it's close enough. No. 13, you might be right, I've never been able to figure it out... it's either Tom or Treebeard (or someone else). Anyone want to shed some light?
Erelith - September 5, 2005 06:15 AM (GMT)
Actually if you wanted to get tecnical about it (since you didn't say specifically Middle-Earth.) it would be the Valar, no doubt about it. ;) At least, I'm pretty sure it would be. I know Tom mentions something about being there before the elves creation, right? so I wonder who would be oldest, the Gods or Tom. Hmmm...
