Title: Harry Potter!?!?!

Hobbity_Goose - July 13, 2005 08:04 PM (GMT)
Well, thought i should mention it as it will be coming out on July 16th, this saturday..

Whats everyones opinion of Harry Potter in general/new book/JK Rowling/constant comparisions between it and TLOTR/ and about any thing else you can think of?!?!?!

hmm... personally... i prefer the books over the films anytime... the films do no justice to the books what so ever, in my opinion it ruins the books. But the 3rd film was considerably better than then the others: but Sirus Black, Peter Pettigrew were nothing like my imagined characters... the werewolf was not much of a werewolf and well i could go on... these films were a let down for me...

some of my friends felt that the last book was very predictable and a bit of a let down as they thought that JK Rowling was writing purely for the sake of it as she has all the money she needs.. hmmm i don't agree with this... i liked it but my favourite book is the 4th, i think thats the one i mean!! hehe...

well, i leave it to you to discuss, seeing as this is a discussion thread :D :D !! hehe...

I like The Goblet of Fire the best. I don't know exactly why though...

Athéniel Egleriannen - July 14, 2005 09:46 AM (GMT)

Ah, good ol' HP ;) I used to be a fan meself, until LotR stepped into the scene, of course. Now I get the books (I'll be getting the new one too. I just can't find the money yet.) and read them because it's become a ritual. You know how people read LotR once a year? I read Harry Potter like that, but sometimes I don't get through because I religiously read all my Tolkien books at the same time. And there's a lot of them.
I quite agree with ya, Lucy. The films were a complete let down that, owing to the existence of more exciting films at the time HP 3 was out, I never had the chance to see it, so I don't know. I've seen the first a number of times and the second one I've seen once at the cinemas. The books are definitely much better. Their claim was apparently to stay true to the books, but keeping in mind these aren't the books, I think they stayed too true to the books that some of the dialogue was completely re-enacted- which was what made them predictable. I'm not sure about the third film, though. I heard they had a new director, and there have been varied opinions on whether it was a well produced film or not.
Book-wise, the fourth book is my least favourite!! My favourite used to be the second one, then it was the third, then it was both, and now it's the third and the fifth :)

Erelith - July 18, 2005 09:08 AM (GMT)
I finished reading HBP a lil while ago. Sad, and yet I'm somewhat dissapointed in who the HBP was. So far it's my least favorite book.

Athéniel Egleriannen - July 18, 2005 10:14 AM (GMT)

Somewhat contrary to all the other reviews I've heard but okay. I walk into school, and everyone just needs to start a conversation about it and spoil it for me as to who dies *looks grumpy*. Ah well. There were people dressed up and collecting showbags (gimungous- not sure that's a word- broomsticks sticking out of them) at bookstores too

Hobbity_Goose - July 18, 2005 03:53 PM (GMT)
ahh, yes the 6th book, many surprises, kind of sad - i know i was slightly upset!!hmm, kind of weird how she wrote it... --- not sure how!!!!

the whole love interest bit - got annoying ... i won't write anymore about it for i don't wish to err... spoil it.... hmmm... cant it be spoiled!?!?!

i guess i expected more, which was why i guess i was shocked when i ran in to WH Smiths all excited grabbed the book and it was much thinner than the previous two.. hmmm.. i thought!!!!

Again, the most interesting parts are the last 6/7 chapters!!! hehe.... oh well...not sure if it was worth the wait and anticipation....

i've got many theories now in what she'll put in the 7th book, i thought it was slightly obious in what might be happening, shes kind of set the scene in the last chapter, and paved the way for the story to go either way.

Athéniel Egleriannen - July 19, 2005 11:44 AM (GMT)

I seem to be the only one in the whole world who hasn't read it! Strange. Yesterday, this message popped up on my homepage and told me it was the fastest selling book in history. Dun spoil it for me pweease *angel face* I know too many people have tried to already. If ya do, you can always put in huge letters that there's something coming up B)
My disappointment was that it wasn't big enough too. But I haven't read any of it so I probably can't judge. What happened to the each book being bigger than the last thing?? Since you've both read it, how many stars would you give it out of ten? (So I can figure out whether I'll spend my hard earned cash on it for point thingys or get it cheaper from some super store).
I heard another dissuading thing about it. Someone said JK Rowling was only writing for the sake of it, now that she has the money. Not sure if it's true, but it sure would be evil if it were. One thing is I hope the seventh one's going to be a really good conclusion to the series. Nothing could be more of a let down if the last one isn't good.

Hobbity_Goose - July 20, 2005 05:49 PM (GMT)
okay if i say anything that may be a spoiler i will put something like: ~*#*~ either end and in italics!! but i shall keep my mouth closed for now!!

hmmm... perhaps :) :) :) :) :) :) :) (6or7) out of 10 !!!! i thought i would do smilies intstead of stars!!!

yeah, i really do hope the 7th book is brillliant, well better then all of them..

Yeah, it beat her 6th book - so it became one of the fastest selling books worldwide i think that was in one/two days!!

Erelith - July 21, 2005 03:28 PM (GMT)
The radio said HBP sold 6.9 billion copies within 24 hours. I wouldn't give it many stars, maybe for me it was a five, or around there. My favorite still remains as the Goblet of Fire.

Athéniel Egleriannen - July 25, 2005 11:00 AM (GMT)

It doesn't seem too exciting then? One or two days...? People must have been expecting something extraordinarily good. Okay, nothing's driving me more insane. It's everywhere! Everywhere I tell you, promotions, sign thingys at shopping centres, even my Mum talks about it (now that's really really rare. I don't think you guys understand how rare, but it's rare ). Never have I gone more mad than I was happy when LotR was all over the place, if that makes any sense to you.

Hobbity_Goose - July 27, 2005 08:36 PM (GMT)
in some mad way it kinda makes sense.

yeah - it took me 2 days but that was because i was working 6 hours on the saturday and 6 hrs on the sunday - but i decided to read a chapter during my lunch break which is about 30mins long, i began reading 15mins before i had to go back and i thought oh well i'll have enough time, but the chapter was longer than i thought and i ended up going back to work 15 mins late!!! after i managed to fit the book back in my locker!! hehe... the people i work with laughed!!! luckily they did!!!!

Anelith - September 27, 2005 07:29 AM (GMT)

I havent read the HBP yet. I know it has been on sale for awhile but I will be waiting until the hardback editions come out so I can get it- because I have the entire series in hardbacks I have this collection of them and it just won't be right if I get a non-hardback even if it'll be a much much longer wait :crying:

j_mercuryuk - November 15, 2005 04:04 PM (GMT)
I've read HBP and I loved it. I'm also actually EXCITED about the film coming out on friday.

Hobbity_Goose - November 15, 2005 10:28 PM (GMT)
ohh.. yeah the new film looks pretty good in comparison to the last 3 which as i look back on weren't brilliant!!!

i've seen this preview of Harry attemptuing to get the golden egg, and its pretty good special effects, nothing like WETAs work, but still its not bad.... and i think the acting gets better each year... and i believe this is the 3rd director they've had!!!! ooo and i don't like professor Mad Eye Moodys eye - it looks relly stupid...
  !!!!

this is one of my favourites in the series, and i really hope it isn't spoiled, because i kinda felt like the previous films were made purely to make money, because for me they didn't capture the beauty of the books, the kinda innocence hmmm i cant really describe what i mean!! hehe...

Lozadora - November 18, 2005 04:57 PM (GMT)
OOOooo, the fourth Harry Potter film is out today, but I probably won't get to see it untiil next friday :(

I've seen the trailers and it looks pretty good, I'm still not sure how they intented to fit such a huge book into one movie though,m I think that they must have missed a lot of it out. We shall have to see... :elrond:

I know what you mean Lucy, I feel like the last three adaptions weren't made as well as they could, or should have been, more like they were churned out as quickly as possible to make as much money as possible...it's such a shame, like the exact opposite of the Lord of the Rings films which were adapted as brilliantly as a film version could ever hope to be and were made with so much love and attention to detail. I'm going to stop my rant now

*keeps fingers crossed that the GoF film is as good as anticipated*

Erelith - November 19, 2005 07:38 AM (GMT)
Ohh. I loved it. I was gripping my friend's arm/leg in anticipation because I knew when something bad would happen. It was funny because I was like 'man, I'm so sorry I did that' [I was holding on with a hard grip particularly near the end parts] and he's like 'its okay, I didn't feel it after the first ten minutes or so.' haha. XD Mad-eye is so cool, he's like a big kid, I love it. I was dissapointed however, they messed up a little here and there. Overall it was my favorite movie [but that could be because it's my favorite book] I really hated the sixth book, and the last movie. The dumbledore actor was a little less-hippish in this movie too which was nice.

I wore my ''hogwarts'' uniform. Haha. Boy's uniform anyways. I had the collared shirt and grey sweater with a pair of black pants and I tried finding a tie with little luck. I hate skirts >_< ...it was fun though.

Hobbity_Goose - November 21, 2005 07:19 PM (GMT)
ahh awesome - sounds like you had fun dressing up and stuff!! hehe.. cool....

hmm i'm not going to be able to see it until bout well i guess in a months time, which is soo annoying, all of my friends have seen it already.. :( ... but i've had to go to pooey work.... ohh well... they've all told me that its much better than the last films..

**SPOILER-from GOBLET OF FIRE** unless of course you've read it....

but one of my friends said that cedric diggory's death was under played.... but i don't know because i've not seen it!!! However she said that the actor wh played voldemort was awesome, was brilliantly acted and portrayal of voldemort!!!

Athéniel Egleriannen - November 23, 2005 09:56 AM (GMT)
The trailer looks so damn cool! This is one Harry Potter movie I really want to see :) I like all the action bits with the Tournament. Looks thrillling... And the yule ball looks nice. All Wintry and cool... I'm probably going to go drag someone to see it with me when it comes out. (And now, I wail) But you guys get it before us. Again. *grumbles* I never liked those evil people who determine the release dates. hmph. There's still another week for me.

I thought the book was okay (I somehow prefered the third book), but the ending was great. I'm really interested in seeing how they've made out Voldemort to be. If he looks anything like those people did with the face on the back of Quirrel's face in the Philosopher's Stone, I'll scream.

Haha, it sounds like you had fun dressing up to see this Ere'. If I ever did that, people would start staring as if I'd gone insane (and that would be nice, I guess, since I am).

Before I forget, I finally started reading the HBP. It took me awhile, didn't it? I'm only half way through so don't spoil it for me yet :) Well, except for the certain person who dies thanks to certain inconsiderate people on the day it came out :oddlook: This is starting to remind me that...
Everyone here has read the Order of the Phoenix, right? If not, warning. SPOILER.
... I still haven't gotten over how Sirius died. It was mean. And he was my favourite character! Pooey :crying:
~~
I'm really curious to know how the whole series will finish up now. Just hoping it's nothing sad or anything (I've cried through many books, LotR not the least :crying:), but guess we'll have to wait and see.

Lozadora - November 24, 2005 04:33 PM (GMT)
Yay! I'm off to see GoF tomorrow!!!! I know how you feel Miranda, I can't beleive she killed him off, i'm still waiting for him to come back in the seventh book *keeps fingers crossed* He was my favourite character also, although I didn't really like him in the films, I always pictured him as slightly younger and well...better looking  Kind of Like Trent Reznor :yesnod: (Singer in the band Nine inch nails)
Still I can't wait for tomorrow!!!! :galadrielangry:

Athéniel Egleriannen - November 27, 2005 10:50 AM (GMT)
Yeah well, I don't think, somehow, that many of the characters turn out exactly how I imagined them to be from the books, Laura. They bear really similar resemblances and everything but they're just not the same somehow, if you know what I mean. But you get used to them. I haven't seen the Prisoner of Azkaban movie, so I'll just keep the image of Sirius that I have somewhere in my head XD
Lucky you! Four days till it comes out here, but I'm not seeing it till school finishes which will be little more than a week later.

I finished the HBP this morning. Nooooooooooooo... *sniffs, then bursts into tears* It was pretty sad, considering the impact some characters have had on the story... and *grins slightly*... my eyes were watering. That brings my total count of books that make me 'cry' up to three.:crying: I'm nuts. Why did she (JK Rowling) have to go and do that?! Though I liked it nonetheless :S My favourites now are something of a cross between the third, fifth and this one ^^ *fingers crossed for the final 'chapter'*
