Title: I know you all do

Resolute al'Therin - January 4, 2006 09:15 PM (GMT)
I know everyone else here reads fantasy other than Robert Jordan *gasp*..actually thats ok i think of it like my nicotene patch inbetween books. heh j/k

Anyway what are some of your other favorite series/authors?

My favorite non WoT/LoTR/CoN would have to be:

Michael Stackpole : Anything hes written but his Dragon Crown series is his best.

The Dark Glory War (Awesome Prequel)
Fortress Draconis
When Dragons Rage
The Grand Crusade

Beldor al'Randir - January 4, 2006 10:09 PM (GMT)
read books other than RJ?? No way... :look

oookay I admit it--I do read other fantasy books...and WoT isn't even my favourite...*seizes the power in order to defend himself from angry fans*

My favourite is definitely the Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien..and I like his other books as well. Other series/authors I like...Terry Goodkind-"Sword of Truth" series, and Margaret Weis/Tracy Hickman-"Death Gate Cycle". I haven't read many series yet...I didn't get into fantasy until recently so...

Rialt Erydinan - January 4, 2006 10:33 PM (GMT)
Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince and Dragon Star Trilogies are amazing. And whats more, they're finished!!

A Wizard of Earthsea - Ursula K. LeGuinn

I did read Brian Jaques when I was younger but I don't realy like the whole animals being like humans in every aspect...cept they arent. But if for some reason the idea of a badger being a hardened warrier gets you off, this is Deffinately the series for you.. :look

American Gods and the Sandman - Niel Gaiman more modern day, but it is deffinately a great book and series

Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien course, this one is a no brainer. Completely changed my life, why do you think I even read the Wheel of Time?

Myst - dont remember who its by

Sword of Truth - Terry Goodkind albeit not finised, its still good

And with that I think I'll let some of the other fantasy crazed fans tell us what they enjoy... cuz otherwise I'll steal al the glory.. I read too much -_-

Naridin - January 5, 2006 02:48 AM (GMT)
Sabriel (I only read the first book. The rest are Abhorsen and uh...forgot the third. )
LoTR
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel by Susanna Clarke
Harry Potter (?)

I can't believe I read too little. :look

Kris Vespin - January 5, 2006 03:06 AM (GMT)
Sword of Truth is the only other really big fantasy series i have gotten into it does rock but not as much as WoT

Freyja Annolyn - January 5, 2006 01:31 PM (GMT)
I love Terry Pratchett. The Discworld sort of series is so amazing. I love the characters, I love the world, I love the humour... When it comes to humour, no one is better than Terry Pratchett.

Other series I like are Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I've also read others but they weren't good enough to mention as my favourites.

Nina Kian - January 5, 2006 02:59 PM (GMT)
Some of my favourite non WoT series are:

the Banned and the Banished by James Clemens
The Dark Magician by Trudy Canavan
The Shanara books by Terry Brookes

and of course Harry Potter!

Myara Ahnri - January 5, 2006 07:33 PM (GMT)
I'm still working on the Wheel of Time series! Jordan's writing style is harder for me to read, but I like the world, a lot, so I'm going to finish them.

Hmmmm, I started reading the old D&D works ages ago, specifically enjoying R. A. Salvatore's writing. I also loved the books about the Harpers. I've read far too many authors who wrote in the D&D worlds to list, but I never found one I didn't like. Table top D&D, one of the great games, definitely on the list of things I miss from the high school years.

The Earth's Children Series by Jean M. Auel was an amazing work of writing. I need to read the early books again, since it took so long between books at one point that I lost track of things. This series goes back to my high school days and many, many lunches in the library. :look I'd like to add a nice hardback set of these to my collection.

I love George R. R. Martin, and again I need to go back and read that whole series so I can work on the newest addition. The world he created (especially the Dothraki) would make for an interesting RP, in my opinion.

I've also read a bit of Terry Brooks and as soon as I can finish my current projects I'll be reading more.

I'd like to read all of Tolkien's works some day, but for now there's just something that keeps me from being able to do that.

Three things I'd love, more time to read, a longer attention span (*cough* ADD *groan*) and a better memory so I didn't have to read through past books when the next one comes out!

Robert Laurel - January 5, 2006 10:04 PM (GMT)
Lots of fantasy authors, here...

Tolkien, of course. First fantasy author I read. Susan Shwartz, Judy Tarr, Harry Turtledove, Misty Lackey, Barbara Hambly, Katharine Kerr, and I whole bunch more who I can't remember right now...

Sapphira Calren - January 5, 2006 10:23 PM (GMT)
Beldor, Jordan isn't my favorite either...Tolkien, Haydon and Martin all beat him. :P

Tolkien is my favorite. I'm standing with Rialt in the "changed my life" camp, he got me hooked on fantasy. I own most of his books...I haven't read them all yet though :look

I still like Jaques. :nod Actually, I haven't read a new one of his in a while...I read Triss soon after it came out, I just got Rakkety Tam for Christmas but haven't started it yet. There's another new one, but I forget what it's called (or I'd have asked for it too :P) that I hope to buy soon. :)

George R. R. Martin is definately one of my all time favorites. I just started his new book...but I have to pause on it for a while. :pout: If you've never read it, then do it. That is a command. Just as having read WoT is necessary for joining his sites, reading A Song of Ice and Fire is necessary for living. :P If you read it and didn't like it...well, I don't even like to think about that...it's just not right. :P Myara, now that you mention it, a SoIaF RP does sound like fun. :)

I love Elizabeth Haydon. She writes A Symphony of Ages, which is also a requirement for life. Definately one of the greatest, if you haven't read it, go read it. Yes, even before you read ASoIaF, it's that good.

Michelle West is quite good. I've only read two of her books, Hunter's Oath and Hunter's death, and they were amazing I want to read her Sun Sword series, but every time I try to start it I get confused, and then I have to stop to read something else. :P From what I've heard it's easier after the Hunter books, though, so hopefully next time, which I hope will be soon. :)

The Abhorsen series, by Garth Nix. The first is, as Naridin said, Sabriel, the second is Lirael and the third is Abhrosen. They're all amazing, definately worth a read, and they don't take long to get through. :)

I think that's most of them...I'm sure there's more, but I can't remember them all right now. :look

Marian Skylas - January 6, 2006 12:51 AM (GMT)
*sigh* This is depressing. I haven't been reading enough lately...

Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series is quite good, though I haven't finished reading it... First must get done with Knife of Dreams. <_<

TAMORA PIERCE. It isn't high fantasy, more the cool heroine kind of stuff, but I absolutely love her work.

Harry Potter is also very good. I'm an avid fan of that too. ;)

Have to say that Tolkien really isn't my kind of series. I love the movies, which I know don't do justice to the books, but I just couldn't finish reading them. Apologies. :look

Wow. I need to start reading again.

Rialt Erydinan - January 6, 2006 01:34 PM (GMT)
Yes I agree with you on that one Marian, and you really need to try Tolkien again later on down the road. You would be so surprised by what you manage to do when you least expect it.

And I was looking at George RR Martin the other day at Barnes and Noble. I was so tempted to buy it...but I ended up getting Dune instead, because my love of fantasy doesn't really stop there I really enjoy Science Fiction as well. I haven't read nearly as much in that genre as I have in Fantasy, but I'm taking the plunge. I think I'm going to enjoy as much as Fantasy. MAybe not more, cuz I just love the whole magic midieval thing. I always have like 5 books that I read at a time. Right now its as follows.

Knife of Dreams (Rand sent me this one in the mail --you should know him from glimmers if you were there) but i cant seem to just sit the hell down and read it.

Neuromancer -- This one is one of those books that defines a genre. The first Cyber Punk novel. It coined the expression, the net long before the internet was a thought into fruition

The American Plot -- An alternate history of what might have happened if we had had a different president during World War II and we made a shaky alliance with Germany instead of fighting them. Creepy ass book.

Memoirs of a Geisha -- read the book, then go and see the damn movie.

Sword of Truth -- been reading for like 2 years. WoT means more to me so i would read that instead. or the other books im working on.

Resolute al'Therin - January 6, 2006 05:38 PM (GMT)
Sci-Fi is excellent as well. I think ive read almost every Star Wars book...ever......good stuff thats where i first encountered people like Stackpole, Salvatore,Allston,Zahn, etc...

Aryatha Kalden - January 7, 2006 03:48 AM (GMT)
Tears of Artamon by Sara Ash

The Symphony of Ages by Elizabeth Haydon

The Wayfarer Redemption by Sara Douglass

The Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb

The Blending by Sharon Green

And others by:
Terry Brooks, Neil Gaiman, Tolkien, Anne McCaffrey, Raymond E. Feist, and too many more. :P

I'm currently working on a book by R. A. Salvatore. :)

Robert Laurel - January 7, 2006 04:41 AM (GMT)
I've got so many science fiction books I don't even know where to start...

Ildeus Sharshain - January 7, 2006 09:19 AM (GMT)
Yeah I'm a Scifi Buff my self, fantasy is sort of my dirty habit :look

I have read the Wayfarer's Redemption for the first three and now intend to read the second Trilogy. I also read Threshold by Sara Douglas as well, was a quicky in between Scifi novels by L.e. Modesitt Jr.

My favourite serieses ever are Dune and Childecycle, Frank Herbert and Gordon R. Dickson are the godfathers of the Intrinsic Science Fiction.

Katrina Borudan - January 8, 2006 04:58 AM (GMT)
George R.R. Martin is definitely one of my all time favourite authors, his skill and ability is AMAZING.

some of my other favourite authors would be: (in no particular order)
Lian Hearn
Sara Douglass
Terry Goodkind
Elizabeth Kostova
Christopher Paolini
David Eddings
so on, and so forth...

Zekieal al'Kith - January 8, 2006 08:43 PM (GMT)
Runelords- David Farland's writing style is kind of...empty...but i liked the series.

Pretty much anything Sapphira has read i have, as far as i know 0.o

neil Gaiman is my favorite Author period end of story. American Gods and Neverwhere are the only two i have under my belt, but i think im gonna tackle Good Omens.

Simon R. Green is good if you like Modern fantasy books, that really just dont make any sense. you'll like him even better if you like detective novels. I havent read any work other then his nightside novels but they are pretty cool.

James M. Ward- He's only wrotte one novel called halcyon blithe. the cover of the book makes you think you're gonna get something good...but....eck....

Elizabeth Haydon- is right up there with Neil Gaiman in my eyes. i love her world and characters to death. the rhapsody series kicks ass, andSapphira, Achmed is the best.

R. A. Salvatore- ...

Sara Douglas- all i have to say...is no....dont get it...because if you do, youll hate it, but like a diabetic chocolate fan, you cant resist.... :thump:

The redwall series has lost its glamour to me, but i think if nothing else showed itself i could still read one...

thats all i got off the top my head.

I strongly suggest elizabeth Haydon and Neil Gaiman to all of you.

Robert Laurel - January 8, 2006 10:09 PM (GMT)
For fantasy you can add Ray Feist, Guy Gavriel Kay and Janny Wurts for me. As for science fiction, Jerry Pournelle, Isaac Asimov, Ben Bova, David Weber, John Ringo, Eric Flint, Steve Stirling, Harry Turtledove, Catherine Asaro (she's my neighbor), Dave Drake, Lois McMaster Bujold, Andre Norton...

Ildeus Sharshain - January 9, 2006 11:14 PM (GMT)
One thing I read was the The Magravandias Chronicles, and I can honestly say if your not a girl you probably shouldn't read it, and maybe even if you are. One has to be really open minded and even then its disturbing on many levels, well written, but disturbing. I haven't written anything else by Storm Constantine, I was afraid to.

Sapphira Calren - January 10, 2006 01:32 AM (GMT)
 What's so disturbing? And what's it about...I'm curious now. :P

Ildeus Sharshain - January 10, 2006 04:38 AM (GMT)
I'd rather not say, you'll have to find a descrip on the net

Resolute al'Therin - January 10, 2006 04:25 PM (GMT)
and if he wont say........be scared

Zekieal al'Kith - January 11, 2006 12:07 AM (GMT)
Im also reading something by David and Leigh Eddings.
Katrina reminded me of it which reminded me in turn to ask you, katrina borudan, if you have read Belgarath the Sorcerer

Laridian Maeronen - January 13, 2006 08:46 PM (GMT)
Well lemme see...

I did get my huge fantasy kick when I read Brian Jaques, he was the guy who really dragged me into the medium, though I've pretty much outgrown him now, probably where I got my interest in anthro, too...

But I'm also guilty of the sci-fi love, mostly Ray Bradbury, Alduous Huxley, Frank Herbert, Isaac Asimov, that kinda stuff..

And aside from WoT, I have to say my favorite fantasy series is actually a comic book.

Fables, if you haven't read it, is pretty much just down right awesome. All the faerie tale people you could ever think of, actually exist, in their own little worlds. Unfortunately, someone rolled in and took over their world, as well as many other worlds. (Think different genre, or 'universe' or whatever, is a different world) A few escaped, and now live exiled, secretly living in the Mundy, or the mundane world. It's modern day, but there's still a lot of magic, even if it does initially start as a murder-mystery type thing. READ IT. There are lots of nice trade paper backs. Go now.

......and there's a sci-fi comic of favoritism too... "Y- The Last Man" is literally about that; the last man on earth. Some mysterious plague hits the entire world at once, killing every male on the planet except Yorick. And his monkey. It's a good series, though meant for 'mature readers'. ..no, not porn, but 'adult' subject matter. Swear words in comics??! ZOMG! :P

I have not read George R.R. Martin... I shall now seek him out, sounds good.

Zekieal al'Kith - January 14, 2006 12:41 AM (GMT)
:goddammit: :goddammit:
I saw that today at Barnes and nobles laridian, the fables thing. actually thought about purchasing it but then i realized i needed another neil gaiman book

Laridian Maeronen - January 14, 2006 01:06 AM (GMT)
There's always next time! :D

Though I do need to read me some Neil Gaiman, I've restricted myself to his Sandman stuff and never got around to reading any of his novels.

My favorite comic author, though, is Alan Moore. Guy is too cool for words. Did League of Extraordinary Gentlemen(not a fave but they made a movie), From Hell, V for Vendetta, and one of my faves, Watchmen. Plus, now has his own publishing company, ironically titled "America's Best Comics" (he's a Brit). Top Ten is my fave from there, but other stuff of goodness resides there. Oh, and if anyone saw Constantine, he created the character, just not the series.

Zekieal al'Kith - January 14, 2006 02:38 AM (GMT)
I never used to like the idea of comics, but i think i might seriously start looking into them. Especially since a few of my brother and I's friends are going to be making a comic based on their world
(WHICH IS AMAZING)
I think i really wanna purchase a comic called Arkham Asylum though. Ive always been a batman geek, and since batman begins came out i've kind of felt a reconnection with my childhood role model :ph43r:
I'm looking at Sandman, and wincing at the prices, and im really contemplating submitting a couple more applications to places around town so i can afford my potential new habit. I also want to look at the Sin city comics, just to see what the movie didnt catch.

and while im on the topic of comic books, does anyone play city of villains/heroes? I do so sporadically, but It really has made me come to appreciate cheesy comic book heroes.

Laridian Maeronen - January 14, 2006 06:21 AM (GMT)
As for Batman, I recomend the schtuff Frank Miller did (Sin City guy), and also Alan Moore's bit, think it was called "The Killing Joke." Which is more about the Joker, really, but quite lovely nonetheless. I know what you mean about not liking comics. Most of my life I've been a hardcore book worm. I never got into comics until sophomore year of high school, but now I am a scary scary fan girl! wheeeeeeee!!!! :jitter: Probably 'tis because it combines into a new medium, with both Art (my hopeful future profession) and literature.

And if you're into horror and such (which I am muchly) I reccomend Hellboy, which isn't that freaky so much as just plain cool, and Hellblazer if you're looking for the freaky. ...kinda gory too. Huzzah for Constantine.

And if that comic you speak of making is online....

LINK IT. :ph43r:

Zekieal al'Kith - January 17, 2006 02:29 AM (GMT)
well, i finished Good omens by Neil Gaimen....now i have to tackle Canticle for Leibowitz for extra credit.

while i was at barnes and nobles yesterday, i ran into a fellow RJ reader
I made him buy the rhapsody series.

Mirazhe Tomai - January 18, 2006 03:51 AM (GMT)
Cripes. Why haven't I posted here?? So what are we talking about.... *catches up*

I'm sure that my favorite authors have all been listed by other people, but who cares? :P

Right now, I'm a Jacqueline Carey and Anne Bishop freak. Went out and bought Dreams Made Flesh a couple of weeks ago. I like their books. *nods* Jacqueline Carey is the authoress of the Kushiel's Legacy books (Kushiel's Dart, Kushiel's Avatar, Kushiel's Chosen) and the Sundering (Godslayer and Banewreaker). Anne Bishop is the authoress of the Black Jewels Trilogy (often called BJT, which include Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows and Queen of the Darkness, and a follow-up Dreams Made Flesh, plus the companion The Invisible Ring) and the Tir Alainn Trilogy (can't remember them off the top of my head) plus Sebastian which comes out in February. :jitter: :look

Also, there's Garth Nix, Eoin Colfer, Libba Bray (loved A Great and Terrible Beauty), and a bunch others that slip my mind right now.

I'm reading Shannara right now, but i don't know how I feel about them. Slightly long and boring, kinda like WoT. But I'll finish them anyway, :P

Neil Gaiman....I think I read one book by him, but I didn't really like it.

Nina Kian - January 18, 2006 06:00 PM (GMT)
I love the Kusheil books, still havent finished the first one yet lol but i love the style of the writing and the storyline is great.

Mirazhe Tomai - January 18, 2006 10:24 PM (GMT)
Didn't you start that a couple of months ago? :P

Nina Kian - January 19, 2006 07:24 AM (GMT)
Yeah i did, but i got side tracked by some other books like KoD and the Da Vinci code lol! But that big thing you told me about has just happened so its alot better now! i am determined to read it!!!!!

Rahien Ayendes - February 1, 2006 08:32 AM (GMT)
Ohhh I just finished Kushiel's Dart and I loved it, absolutely brilliant.
It reminded me of the Sleeping Beauty Trilogy by Anne Rice in some ways, although that's a little more explicit ;)

Zekieal al'Kith - February 4, 2006 01:13 PM (GMT)
here's a question:
is anyone a member to a roleplaying forum for any of their other book series?

oh yeah, Laridian you remember that comic i was talking about with my friends? They are looking for an artist if you're interested in at least talking to them about it.

Laridian Maeronen - February 4, 2006 07:44 PM (GMT)
Nope, don't RP anywhere else online.

And Zek, I would, but I'm currently working on another comic (one-shot fan thing) and I dunno if I'll even manage to get that one done any time soon what with school and such. Try me in the summer. :P

Rahien Ayendes - February 6, 2006 08:19 AM (GMT)
I've only ever done WoT RP..

And D&D tabletop, but that's something WAAYYYY different :look

Laridian Maeronen - February 6, 2006 08:42 AM (GMT)
Mmmm.... D&D. I've only just gotten into it, but already it p0\/\/ns. Huzzah for hitting on orcs!

Marian Skylas - February 6, 2006 12:52 PM (GMT)
I have another site, but it's an original RP, so I guess that doesn't really count... It would be cool join/make a Sword of Truth one, once I finish reading that series. And Tamora Pierce RPGs are always cool, except they're usually a lot more light than WoT ones... :look
