Title: A Pained Reminder
Description: (open)

Kaelyn Jaymareth - January 4, 2007 09:27 PM (GMT)
It blazed before her, an endless spiral that seemed to have no beginning or end. It was just there, in a time of its own, of rapid fury that was enhanced by her frozen moments of time. Each breath that escaped her lips lasted longer than it should have been, while the seconds between a precious blink lasted an eternity before she was relieved of its existence. It was meant for torment, as her presence was encased in a viscous like state, in which time slowed so that she may witness the eternal agony that continued before her. An agony that she had wished to forget, but it haunted her in her dreams every night that she was able to enter into a slumber. Its heated waves struck through her with excruciating pain, as if they were arrows themselves waiting to fester with whatever concoctions they were tipped with, to brew within her. Its intensity took her breath with is grasping claws, while its touch made her wiggle in agony as her skin stung with a temperature far beyond that of which it was capable to handle. She was trapped, with the core of her vision entranced on the column of fire. It stank of burned hair and flesh that caused her stomach to writhe, though she was not the source of it for her hair lay matted with sweat which clung to the sides of her face. It came from another victim, whose eyes continued to become focused through the flames. Eyes that bore a resemblance to someone she thought she knew, but the pain in them as they were being consumed reminded her of…

Kaelyn woke up screaming as a blinding headache consumed all her conscious thoughts and vision with a pain far beyond what she had ever experienced. Her sight was blurred with throbbing colors changing in frequency with each pulse of pain that paralyzed her body. Red, streaks of red all of brilliant shades marred her vision overburdening all other colors, other than the yellow streaks that caused her to whimper every time its existence was displayed. For its presence was so intense that it was like the sun itself searing her eyes so that another wave of pain engulfed her body. She lay on the floor, with a weakness like that of an exhausted body trying to get control of her surroundings. It was like trying to make sense of a partially mixed coloring of paints, having to depict each separate color from the masses of others. It was like a wave as the world swirled before her, even more so as her gaze swept across the dying candle she had lit before falling asleep. The little light it shed was the source of the yellow streaks, for now she was consumed by them before closing her eyes and letting her head drop into the shadow created by her body. She struggled to make her way towards the source to extinguish the flame, for her block prevented her from simply channeling. At last with the smothering of the flame between her finger tips darkness swarmed in, a comfort that she welcomed as her pain decreased slightly. I need an Aes Sedai she wanted to laugh if not for the pain. She had always wanted to avoid them as much as possible, now she needed them which was a thought that she believed would never come to existence.

Filtering away any troublesome worries Kaelyn slowly began to make her way to her door, using her hand as a shield in case any light wanted to penetrate her darkness. The candle light that shone through the cracks of her fingers as she opened her door to the hallway was enough to send her hurtling in another wave of pain, before she was able to draw up her sleeve to add thickness to her shelter. With her other hand she traced her way along the hallway, hoping to avoid collision with anything or worse taking a wrong turn. But fate was playing a game with her, for she did miss the one passage she needed leading her astray to unknown crevices, curves and corridors. At last utterly confused she backed against the wall and slowly slid to the ground, hoping that in doing so she could wait out the course of her headache. But it began pounding harder…and harder…while the column of fire slowly crept back into her vision.

Mirazhe Tomai - January 8, 2007 10:35 PM (GMT)
((OO: Finally! :P))

Eerie shadows danced their way across the stone walls, giving the normally familiar hallway an slightly spectral quality. If Mirazhe hadn't walked down this hallway three times a day for the last seven years of her life, the spookiness would have frightened her away. As it was, the memory of this passage was so deeply ingrained that she could have walked here in her sleep, even now.

The Accepted wasn't quite sure why she was here - being an Accepted, her rooms were in a different wing of the White Tower, and unless she had a class to teach or was called to go fetch a novice, she had no good reason to come down here. And reliving old memories would not be a good reason by Aes Sedai standards. To tell the truth, Mirazhe probably shouldn't have been here, not this late. There were better times to come here, times when she wouldn't be berated by a passing Aes Sedai for the lateness of the hour and be actually able to see the place she'd lived in for so long. Not that there was much to see, considering that it was simply a long hallway of doors, each door looking exactly like the one before it, each room exactly like the others, save for the few items each novice kept with her.

Mirazhe paused in front of the door that had led to her old room, the one she'd shared with four other people, and gently laid her hand on the door, careful not to disturb whoever might have been sleeping inside. She only saw one of her four roommates now, and not even on a regular basis, and she didn't know what had happened to the other three. Perhaps they had, like her, become Accepted, but due to their busy schedules (or dislike of her) had never found time to come see her. Perhaps they hadn't been sucessful in their quest to become Aes Sedai and been politely kicked out of the Tower, forced to live their own lives with the memory of failure. Whatever it was that had happened to them, Mirazhe still felt a little sad that she had never gotten a chance to see them since she'd been raised. They hadn't all been her friends and she'd had squabbles with some of them, but they had been her roommates nonetheless.

She was disrupted by her musings by the quiet click of a door opening, and light filtered out, seeming unusually bright. It was followed a moment later by a girl staggering out, blindly searching for something. Mirazhe frowned, unnerved by this sight. Nothing good would come out of this girl's wandering, and the way she staggered, seemingly unsteady on her feet, fortold of bad things to come. Concerned, she silently followed the girl as she rounded the corner, trying to find her way in the darkness. Mirazhe knew she shouldn't be doing this, knew she should have been sleeping soundly in bed, but if something happened to the girl and she wasn't there, she was going to feel awful.

The poor girl staggered and crept along more, until it seemed she finally couldn't stand any more, and slowly sank down to the ground. This was where Mirazhe came in. She rushed towards the girl, not caring if anyone heard, and almost flung herself to her knees next to the novice.

"Oh my goodness! Are you alright??" Throwing decorum to the winds, she reached out to feel the girl's forehead and nearly gasped aloud. "You've got a horribly high fever. We've got to get you to the Infirmary before it gets worse!"

"Oh my goodness! Are you alright?? You've got a horribly high fever. We've got to get you to the Infirmary before it gets worse!"

The icy hand that was suddenly pressed on her forehead drew her from her submission of the horrific pain she was trying to forget. It failed to produce any startlement in response, for now she was too weary to draw up her head and peer at the world around her; instead it presented her with a sickening set of chills that overwhelmed her body.

Fever? Kaelyn wondered confused at her own condition as any other signals from her body were overwhelmed with the growing pain in her head. Instead she was overwhelmed with a chill that was the opposite extreme of the heat she had been burdened with in her dream. It felt like laying naked and immune to the elements of the winters she left back home.

Slowly she forced her head to move back, with as little control as a newborn child, to use the wall as a base. It was then that she dared to open her eyes into tiny slits to see who spoke before her, but even so she still had to shield them from the light. Yet the world that met her, churned her stomach, making the sensation to vomit overbearing. It swam before her in an endless sea of colors, while shapes of fixed objects wavered and oozed into distortion. Among the sea of confusion she was able to make out a shape that just bore the resemblance of a human though the features were indistinguishable. Novice? Accepted? She tried to focus on stilling the swarming colors, but soon gave up as the task was hopeless. It didn’t matter anyways, she was just grateful that there was help.

“Thank you” she tried to smile though her eyes were drained of any sparkle they usually held. That was enough; the little effort produced a groan of pain as the last of her energy was taken. “I can’t…please…don’t leave me here.” Slowly she felt herself rise, with the strength of two hands supporting her weight. With increased agony she was forced to take a step forward and another…there was something wrong. A smell of singed hair began to perfume the air. Looking up she saw it; the fire that ravaged as its own internal furnace…blink… No! It’s just a dream....blink.…another step…she could feel it now…blink…it was getting closer…another step…blink.... The edges of flame were beginning to take on shapes themselves….blink…another step… I couldn’t help it! It wasn’t my fault! …blink…it howled as its fiery tongue reached out to lash her…another step…. She shied away as it attempted to touch her…blink…another step…it was as red as blood…blink…the shapes were beginning…blink…they were eyes…another step…and they looked at her full of accusation….Another step….Blink….

“It wasn’t me, I couldn’t…no” Kaelyn cried out as she attempted to hurl herself away. She couldn’t move. Her body seized as her muscles knitted together in resistance of any movement. It spread through her body, like a growing ache until they surged towards her stomach…the next thing she new she was on the ground paralyzed with stomach pain that threatened to tear her apart.

Mirazhe Tomai - January 17, 2007 09:10 PM (GMT)
(( =O Your computer must hate me........ *mopes*))

The girl seemed to notice her for the first time, slowly opening her eyes as if it caused her great strain and forcing a weak smile. Mirazhe's heart went out to the girl for managing to do so well despite all this pain. But if she had been trying to head for the Infirmary, then she had been going the wrong way, and all her efforts had been wasted. It was obvious that the girl could barely stand up on her own, let alone walk all the way to the infirmary, but it was clear that she was determined to at least try.

Trying to get up off the ground must have taken a huge amount of energy but Mirazhe was determined to make things as easy as possible for her, though save hoisting the girl over her shoulder and carrying her to the Infirmary, there wasn't much else she could do besides offer support and guidance. And if she could have carried the girl there, she would have. However, her slender frame and average height didn't give her much strength, and she had never been much of a tomboy, so she didn't possess the power to carry this girl to where she clearly needed to go.

Together, the Accepted and the novice managed to hobble a few steps through the dark hallway. Mirazhe was starting to feel a little more hopeful about the situation when the girl suddenly stiffened and tried to throw herself to the ground. Mirazhe, alarmed and afraid, tried to tighten her hold so the girl wouldn't injure herself. She needn't have worried. Besides a slight jerk forward, the girl really hadn't moved much. Perhaps she'd realized that she would only cause more harm to herself if she did so....or perhaps it was because she really couldn't move. Her muscles were stiff, straining for the movement that they were being denied. And then she toppled to the floor, the suddeness almost causing Mirazhe to fall down with her.

The situation was not good. Here they were, stranded in a dark hallway somewhere in the White Tower, in the middle of the night, with a sick novice on the ground and a panicky Accepted at her side. Because that was what Mirazhe was: panicked, and scared, and extremely overwhelmed. What was she supposed to do? What could she do? No one had ever taught her what to do in a situation like this! Did she stay with the girl and somehow get the girl to the Infirmary, or did she run for help, hoping that the first Aes Sedai she found would actually listen to her? With each moment, her anxiety mounted until she was nearly as helpless as her companion.

But she had to do something. So she decided to pick the girl up as best she could and attempt to make her way to the Infirmary. Mirazhe bent down, slung an arm over her shoulder, and got up. It was difficult, but she managed to almost get upright. Putting one of her arms around the girl's waist, she tried to walk down the hallway. She was barely succesful, but she did manage to hobble a few steps before she stopped to rest. A few more steps, and rest. A neverending cycle that would hopefully get them where they needed to be before worse disaster occurred.

For a moment she thought she was flying, as a weightless feeling overtook her. It was a peculiar feeling; although her stomach was knotted into a cramp it fluttered with a floating sensation, a combination that made her want to vomit. At first Kaelyn thought she was slipping into unconsciousness, and relished the thought to escape the pain only for a few moments. However, the state her body was in always pulled her back into reality with another flare of pain. And that was becoming unbearable. Her muscles were beginning to strain with the tension that coursed through them creating a fierce aching sensation. Her body trembled and burned as she shifted from being cold to hot almost as frequent as every breath she took.

“Light, help me!” Kaelyn cried as she opened her eyes to see the swirling colors that consumed her vision. Reality had vanished by the distortions; nothing was fixed, but abstracted in a million different pieces. The tormenting flame she had briefly glimpsed vanished, but the foul smell of burning flesh it held lingered. It made her sick with the smell of death, but it also intensified her headache. Slowly the pounding grew, separating into a sporadic rhythm that caused her body to tremble in time with every little pulse….

She screamed, as her head exploded bringing a new wave of torment that seized every part of her body. It was so intense that the swirling colors of her vision blurred into such bright colors she had to close her eyes. Every other strain on her body was lost as the intense crushing feeling of her head became her core focus. Throwing her head back she screamed from the bottom of her soul, until all breath was lost before she gulped air to resume the deafening pattern. She screamed until her throat became raw, until her own ears rang with the cry of pain that escaped her lips. She screamed until tears poured down her face, gathering at the base of her chin before plummeting onto the back of her rescuer’s dress. She had almost forgotten the Accepted in her delusional distress, and thanked the light for her presence. But her screams soon shattered all her thoughts as they continued to erupt from her body, bringing another flood of tears that plummeted into a pool on the woman’s dress; the only sign of suffering her rescuer could ever relate to.

They had been making good progress down the hallway to the infirmary, managing to hobble down several hallways without any major mishaps. Mirazhe could see the pain written all over the girl’s face, and it really broke her hard to see how much the younger girl was trying to be brake. It was clear that she was suffering from immense pain, pain so overwhelming and excruciating that it blinded you to everything and anything that was going on around you. Mirazhe didn’t think she had ever been through something like this, and she hoped under the Light that she would never have to go such a horrendous experience.

However, it didn’t last. A terrible shriek suddenly emerged, and the girl dissolved into a puddle of tears on Mirazhe’s dress, sobbing out her pain. Mirazhe flinched. It was getting bad. As much progress as they had been making, it still wasn’t enough, and Mirazhe knew they wouldn’t be able to make it continuing on at this rate. She was exhausted already, and the girl had to be in a much worse condition than she was. Neither of them would last much longer, and the thought of something happening to the poor girl was enough to send chills of fear down her spine, as well as the looming feeling of guilt that if she didn’t do something, whatever happened would be all her fault.

Something had to be done. Taking a deep breath, Mirazhe focused and embraced saidar. Using a flow of Air, she directed it towards the girl, forming a sort of cocoon of air around her. Then, Mirazhe lifted her up into the air. It took a bit of effort, but it was far easier than dragging a weeping wreck down to the Infirmary. She wasn’t sure if she was allowed to be doing this, unsupervised and at the dead of night, but at this point, she didn’t really care anymore. Keeping a firm grip on the flow of Air, she marched purposefully down to the Infirmary.

(OOC: I just thought I should be an ending on this.)

She woke, not knowing how long it had been since she had lost consciousness. Her head still felt swollen, threatening to burst into another headache if she dared to move, and her throat screamed as she attempted to swallow. A hand slithered into her vision but she was too weak to pull away before the cool rush of healing coursed through her.

"Brave girl, you must stay and rest."

Kaelyn shook her head not understanding, wanting to get away from the hands that wiped the sweat from her brow.

"Take me back to my room."

She did not want to lay under the care of the Aes Sedai, when they could look upon her with pity. She did not want pity, that was the last thing she wanted. Where is the one who brought me here. Light was it all a dream?

"You have channeled without control child and for that you suffered a severe backlash. You must be careful you MUST, for you put yourself at risk as well for others. I know its difficult..."

"Take me back, or I will find my way myself" Kaelyn forced herself to sit up, though she nearly fell over as her world swayed before her. The Aes Sedai stood before her, placing a firm hand on her shoulder to prevent her from moving further. "I will be better in my own chambers."

"That is nonsense child! You will stay here until you are thinking straight."

"Then take me yourself, please. The one who brought me here, I have to thank her." She looked around not caring if her speech was garbled or incoherent. The room was bright and she groaned as another wave of pain shot through her body. "It wasn't a dream."

"Then for your ignorance you have my leave, but we shall see how far you get before I must bring you back."

Kaelyn did not know how she got there, or even wondered how she made it, but the door to her room stood before her. Leaning against it she pushed it with what little strength she had left and forced her feet to move, but she only took a step before she fell to the ground and looked around her room in complete bewilderment. The sheets upon her bed were ash, and the rest of her room was blackened by flame. Lowering her head into her arms she began crying, knowing all to well whose hands it were that pulled her back to her feet.
