Mirazhe Tomai - February 16, 2007 12:23 AM (GMT)
Oh my gosh, do you read Anne Bishop????
Please tell me you at least know what I mean and that I'm not totally obsessed and crazy. :look
Kaelas Saetan - February 16, 2007 12:56 AM (GMT)
You aren't obsessed and crazy. I toyed with the idea of using Daemon as a last name...
I love Anne Bishop! I own the whole Black Jewels Trilogy... I am obsessed and crazy. :whistle
Sapphira Calren - February 16, 2007 02:48 AM (GMT)
I think you're both obsessed and crazy...and I'm a little confused but that's not out of the ordinary. :P Anyway, there's nothing wrong with being a little obsessed- there wouldn't be any WoT RP sites if there was; and nothing wrong with being crazy either, I challenge you to show me someone who's not. :P
Mikaila Reiano - February 16, 2007 06:37 AM (GMT)
*giggles*Mommy is smart! ^^
though, I've never read books by Anne Bishop... so I fail to see the connection :P
BUT i know one thing:
I can do more dots!! :look
Freyja Annolyn - February 16, 2007 10:26 AM (GMT)
*obsesses over Terry Pratchett*
:look
............
Mikaila Reiano - February 16, 2007 01:54 PM (GMT)
ooh, Terry Pratchett!
at least this one I know :P (and love!)
I'm searching for books by Neil Gaiman... they're not so easy to get around here! though I"m just starting "good omens" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, and it's bound to be awesome - it's BOTH of them TOGETHER!!
*bounces excitedly*
Kaelas Saetan - February 16, 2007 02:49 PM (GMT)
I love Good Omens! It's really funny... What with misplacing the antichrist and all.
Have you read American Gods or Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman? He's one of my favorite authors.
What else has Terry Prachett written? I'm not sure I've read any of his other books.
Mikaila Reiano - February 16, 2007 03:06 PM (GMT)
I SO want to read American gods and Neverwhere... I just can't find them in ANY bookstore - and I've searched. :(
stupid bookstores around here don't know what's good for them..... :look :evil
umm.. yeah.
anyway - Terry pratchett has the whole diskworld series (which i haven't read yet, cuz it's soo many books to read in a certain order - or so i was told)
as well as some other books... I've read 'The Wee Free Men' and it's awesome, and the next book (A Hat Full of Sky) is on my bookshelf waiting for me to read it... *sigh* so many books, so little time!
OH! and if you manage to find The Carpet People - read it: it's probably the best book i've ever read - but I can't get a hold of it, either. 'tleast, not in english. and translated books suck!
I also like the Bromeliad Trilogy.. :look
as you can see... Terry Pratchett's been busy :P a friend of mine and I once counted - he's written 47 books! (and it is my plan to read 'em all... soon :P)
yeah, I think you can say i'm also obsessed with Terry Pratchett :P
Resolute al'Therin - February 16, 2007 03:47 PM (GMT)
*sighs*
click the link ^
And for authors..two words:
Terry Goodkind
and the Sword of Truth.
Richard Rahl FTW.
Mikaila Reiano - February 16, 2007 07:07 PM (GMT)
it was a link?! o.o
well, you should have said something sooner :P
Rialt Erydinan - February 16, 2007 07:43 PM (GMT)
good lord Res, don't get me started on Richard fricking war wizard Rahl. *big sigh*
Oh and Mikaila, this is going to sound REALLY weird, but I own American Gods so if you want I can mail it to you, I've already read it. or, when you get to know me better, we can approach that alternative so you don't think im a psycho killer or something. :P
I'm totally not, thats Edeleas.
Sapphira Calren - February 16, 2007 08:31 PM (GMT)
I did click the link, Res...but all I got was a commercial and I didn't feel like waiting around for whatever it was supposed to be. :look Okay, so I'm impatient, sorry.
As far as authors, I can honestly say that I've never read anyone y'all have mentioned. :look Not that I don't want to, I've had them suggested to me before, it's more a matter of time. And the fact that for some reason this year whenever I've had time I've been re-reading. Reread Lord of the Rings at the beginning of the school year, then the first three Symphony of Ages, New Spring (would have read the rest, but I lent EotW to a friend :P) and now I'm rereading A Song of Ice and Fire. Of course, those are all really amazing books and I think everyone should be required to read them in order to continue living. *nod*
Mikaila Reiano - February 16, 2007 09:24 PM (GMT)
*giggles* I don't think you're a crazy psychopath killer... but you'd really be able to send a book you like to someone else? I'm having trouble just lending them to people!
what can I do? I lurve re-reading books... I think I read WoT - each and every book, except for CoT and KoD - more than 10 times, and in two languages! :P
so.. who is this Edeleas guy so I'll know to watch out for him? :look
Mommy... you haven't read ANY Terry Pratchett book?? O.O
that's not good for your health, you know...
I simply cannot read LotR - no matter in what language I try. oh, who am I kiddin - it's practically impossible for me in English. and I have read it once (the whole series) though I can't quite figure out HOW. >.<
Never heard of Symphony of Ages, and ASoIaF - well, I started it, got lost somewhere i nthe second book, and decided it's just too much fore me. maybe someday, when i"ll run out of books to read (like that's gonna happen) I'll pick it up again...
Mirazhe Tomai - February 16, 2007 09:55 PM (GMT)
You haven't heard of any of them, Mommy? Oh my gosh, I think I might just die.
Terry Pratchett and Anne Bishop are two of my very favoritist authors. Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is hilarious, and Anne Bishop's Black Jewels Trilogy is simply amazing. You should read them both when you have the time. *nod nods*
Mikaila, Edel is our amazing MoS, who unfortunately, is crazily busy at university right now. v.v But when he gets back, you'll see how wonderful he is.
And now I'm off to work!
Kaelas Saetan - February 16, 2007 10:39 PM (GMT)
 Anne Bishop books are the best. Ever.
I want to read something by Terry Pratchett now, but I lost my library card. <_<
What are the Symphony of Ages about?
Mikaila Reiano - February 16, 2007 10:50 PM (GMT)
aww, so sad!
I wonder where my library card is... I stopped going there. i'd much rather buy a book then loan it. and even though i'm kinda short in money... well ,I always manage to save for a new book :)
Sapphira Calren - February 17, 2007 06:06 PM (GMT)
No, I've heard of them, I've just never read them....Song of Ice and Fire is worth the time it takes to try it again, Kai. I actually wasn't a big fan of the first book the first time through, but by the end I was totally hooked and now I can't wait for the next one! :D
Symphony of Ages (aka the Rhapsody Series) is a series by Elizabeth Haydon that currently has six books. Well...I'm the worst person to ask to sum up a series in a short paragraph, because I can't do it. :P Basically, there was an island continent, and this girl who lived there was sorta kidnapped by two people who simultaneously saved her life, she's really naive and only sees what she wants to see, but she's still utterly amazing. She ends up on the other side of the world, in a completely different time, and becomes very close to the men who rescued her. There are these demons known as F'dor, whose life force is based on dark fire, and so their sole purpose is to destroy everything, and it's sort of the mission of these three plus a few others to kill all the F'dor. Like I said, right now there are six books, but there will be more. They are among the most amazing fantasy I've ever read, I love them. *nod*
Mikaila Reiano - February 17, 2007 07:48 PM (GMT)
oh wow, sounds interesting...
not good not good... I might just go and buy it, now >.<
pfft, as if I have any money >.<
actually, I'm not that much into fantasy anymore.. . I mean, I lurve it, but right now i"m more interested in reading books about Japan (Tales of the Otori is ranking in the top of the list, donno if you heard about it. it's a great series! Shogun is amnazing as well ,and I have Tai-Pan waiting for me to read it. ok, so it's not japanese, but it's interesting nonetheless)
and also every book by Jacob Raz, who's a professor in the university I *am* going to learn in in a few years :look and there's no question about the fact that he will be one of my professors there *nods*
right now I"m satisfied with hero-worshiping from afar :look
Robert Laurel - February 17, 2007 09:50 PM (GMT)
All of James Clavell's books are good. Shogun as a mini-series with Richard Chamberlain was awesome. Tai-pan bombed at the box office, but I thought the movie with Bryan Brown was pretty good, and was true to the book. Noble House with Pierce Brosnan was decent also. And King Rat was a great movie and made Clavell's name when the book came out.
My fantasy reading varies. I read so many. Just finished re-reading the Fionavar Cycle by Guy Gavriel Kay. Right now I'm reading Deliverer, the latest book in the atevi series by C.J. Cherryh. This is straight SF. I do read a lot of military SF: David Weber, John Ringo, Eric Flint, etc. But my library has a ton of books in it...
Mikaila Reiano - February 17, 2007 10:08 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure I want to watch the movies....
most of the movies on fantasy books seem like they keep trying to ruin the book for me... so even though this is not really fantasy... not sure if I wanna take the risk :P
Sapphira Calren - February 17, 2007 10:11 PM (GMT)
I agree, and nothing bothers me more than people saying they'd rather just watch the movie....or even watch the movie before they read the book.
Mikaila Reiano - February 17, 2007 10:14 PM (GMT)
urg, I know!
some movies (like Eragon) I just did not go see, simply because I was scared it would ruin the book for me...
EDIT: that wasn't really what I wanted to say >.<
got distracted :look
anyway - what bugs me most is ppl who won't read the books cuz the movie was lousy. well DUH! what did you expect? -_-
Sapphira Calren - February 17, 2007 10:15 PM (GMT)
Well, I haven't read the book, although I hear it was amazing, but I hear that the movie was not great at all. A friend of mine went to see it, and he said it wasn't worth a dollar...and he spent seven on it.
Sapphira Calren - February 17, 2007 10:15 PM (GMT)
Of course, on the other hand, I've also heard that it was quite good...although I don't know whether those people read the book or not.
Mikaila Reiano - February 17, 2007 10:18 PM (GMT)
my sister and her friends went to watch it... said it was horrible. since she was the one who got me into the book in the first place, and the only one I would go to that movie with, I just did not go :P
but look at my edit :look
Sapphira Calren - February 17, 2007 10:20 PM (GMT)
Yeah, obviously the book's always better than the movies. I try to tell people that, but they don't tend to listen.
Mikaila Reiano - February 17, 2007 10:24 PM (GMT)
*nods* happens to me too.
it's actually kinda similar to the difference between a translated book and one that is not translated: the less hands it goes through, the better it is.
Sapphira Calren - February 17, 2007 10:25 PM (GMT)
Yeah? I wonder why that is...you wouldn't think translating would make that much of a difference, since it's really only changing the letters, not the meaning, right? Of course, I guess there's no way to keep things from getting lost in translation, is there?
Mikaila Reiano - February 17, 2007 10:32 PM (GMT)
it's not just letters, it's the whole structure of the sentance. and also all those 'lost in translation' thingies.
some ppl say - and I agree - that a translated book has more of the translator than of the actual writer in it... I htink it true, since when one is forced to re-write a whole book, no matter how hard one tries, the book would not be exactly the same if someone else translated it. every translator puts a little something of him/herself in the book.
Freyja Annolyn - February 19, 2007 09:07 AM (GMT)
I don't like translated books anymore. They are decent, I think, but with authors like Pratchett who make a lot of puns and other tricks with the English language, it's really hard to translate them without sounding really... weird or tacky. Something, even if it's little things, is always lost in translation. And it just feels more authentic and somehow pure to read books in their original languages.
Resolute al'Therin - February 19, 2007 03:36 PM (GMT)
The movie Eragon sucked. The books own.
Rialt is that a good dont get you started on Lord Rahl, or a bad dontg et you started? :P
Rialt Erydinan - February 22, 2007 03:54 AM (GMT)
It's a little of both. I think Goodkind had the same thing happen to him that Jordan did. The books were great for a while and then started sucking it up, but we're all so immersed we can't let go. Which is evidence by our presences here. :P
And no, I don't have a problem sending you a book if you really want me to. I've already read it, so if i can spread the love, just send your address my way and it'll be on the way as soon as I can make it to the post office.
Edit :: you can call me daddy if you feel the need to do so, I don't really care what you call me as long as it ain't bastard or somesuch....then I'll have to bust out the balefire... ;) Figured I would respond here to your other post.
Mikaila Reiano - February 22, 2007 08:11 AM (GMT)
oooh, yay! *snuggles teh Daddy*
I'll tlak to my parents, and I'll PM you!
thank you so much! :D
*bounces around happily*
Resolute al'Therin - February 22, 2007 02:21 PM (GMT)
LoL Rialt, its true the third book was jaw-dropping amazing. The first two were great...The foutrh was fine....The fifth.....he didn't even draw the Sword of Truth......The sixth...he drew it once in combat......
Negative Negative!
I am reading Pillars of Creation right now, and so far its pretty good, but I am 100 pages in, and WTF is Richard?!?!?!?!
LOL
Rialt Erydinan - February 22, 2007 06:55 PM (GMT)
lol, well I'm only halfway through the second book, but Sidivin had read all of them and assures me they're very very good, but that they have a tendancy to do what WoT did.
soooo, my Sorority makes us dress up on Thursdays and I feel horrible. There's nothing worse than having to look pretty when you feel sick, cuz you think you look bad all the time. >.< I just want to go to sleep.
Mirazhe Tomai - February 23, 2007 02:25 AM (GMT)
Awwww, poor Daddy. :look
I hope you feel better soon. I hope all of us that are sick feel better soon.
Sapphira Calren - February 23, 2007 02:55 AM (GMT)
*huggles Rialt* Hope you feel better soon!
You have to dress up every Thursday? That's an odd rule...what constitutes "dressing up" and who defines it? You have to get all dressed nice even if you're just going to hang out around your sorority house or apartment?
Rialt Erydinan - February 23, 2007 03:45 PM (GMT)
Well thats the thing, we don't have a house, and if you don't have class then as long as you don't go anywhere you don't have to dress up. It's a P.R thing. (public recruitment) We have to present ourselves nicely and as women of poise and purpose (which are two of our four aims) or no one will want to join our group of lovely ladies. So its written in our bylaws that we have to dress up on Thursdays unless for some other reason we do another day or its raining or something. We aren't Nazi's about it.
Dressing up, in our bylaws, because you better believe there are things that our national headquarters defines as badge attire aka dressing up. Like, no sneakers, no denim whatsoever. its kind of like Sunday best. I usually just wear a pair of black slacks and a pretty shirt with some jewelry and matching shoeses.. If you can even imagine me wearing that. :P
So in other news I still feel crappy, in fact, worse than I did yesterday. I have these weird Shower Soother SudaCare thingys that I might make use of in the shower today. :( I don't want to be sick anymore, I hate it!!!!! And my room is a mess... :( :(
