Title: ~Bio :: Marreane al Ceare
Description: Novice

Marreane al Ceare - March 18, 2007 06:46 AM (GMT)
Name: Marreane al Ceare
Origin: Ebou Dar
Age: 16
Height: 5' 4"
Weight: 115 lbs
Hair: Choppy to shoulders, black
Eyes: Blue-gray
Personality:
Marreane is most definitely not a 'what you see, is what you get' kind of girl. She's honest, but has problems with telling someone how she feels about them if she feels that it will hurt them in some way. (She hopes that training in the Tower will help her past this specific obstacle.) Marreane does, however, make one exception: she doesn't make a point at sugar-coating her opinion if she's not fond of you. At first, she seems like a quiet and shy girl, but don't let her timid exterior get the best of you. Once a person has taken the time to get to know her, she generally opens up to them and allows others to see what a talkative person she is. Coming from a plain ol' run-of-the-mill family, she's always held her values high. She's never one to run away from a friend if they ever need advice or a shoulder to cry on, and she always hopes that those she calls 'friend' will do the same for her.

History:
Born in Ebou Dar, capital of Altara, Marreane was used to rough treatment right from the start. Her birth coincided with one of the many festivals Ebou Dar holds, but unfortunately for her, that meant Wise Women and Healers were in short supply. Her mother died during her birth, leaving her to the care of her elder brother of eight and his father, a potter who centered his trade in the Rahad area of Ebou Dar. Her mother's only heirloom was a plain silver necklace that her mother had given to her when she "came of age."

Income was low, needless to say. Marreane did everything she could to help, dressing as a boy and running around with her brother, doing odd jobs. Andar (her brother) was usually the one to approach a prospective customer, and thus was usually the one to get the respective slap or kick if the offer did not find fruit. Marreane learned to be quick to avoid the second blow aimed in her general direction, but her brother's pain haunted her for the first years of her childhood.

The small amount that the two managed to make running messages and the like went directly into the family's meager coffer, so the two adolescents seldom knew anything of personal items. Clothes were bought at the first of every year, and expected to last the entire year, or they would go without. One thing the family did agree upon, they would not beg, even if they were on the brink of starvation. They had too much honor for that.

Through the struggles, the family was close-knit and supported each other, even when it came down to the point when, at age nine, Marreane and Andars' father became sick. Try as they could to do anything, he passed away. It was at this point that their life took a drastic change.

Andar, age sixteen at this point, decided to take it upon himself to join the crown guard. This meant moving out of the slums, and into the middle-class neighborhoods of Ebou Dar. For the first time Marreane was allowed to don attire that was suitable for a girl her age. She denied herself the ultimate prize, though- her mother's necklace. She believed deep down, that it would not count unless she had earned the right to be called “woman” and not “girl.”

With Andar’s pension rolling in to sustain their standard of living, the two bought a small home near the center of town, where the bustle and fast-paced life awed them. Marreane played the homemaker, all the while going by “Mari” to signify that she did not acknowledge herself as an adult.

She sometimes saw the sideways smirk people gave her when they thought she wasn’t looking, after hearing her name the first time. Just a silly little girl, they mused, and resigned themselves to ignore it. The silly little girl who had once ran through the streets of a slum had grown up, though, and few could gaze deeply enough to see it.

At age twelve, when Andar was granted leave to do free patrol (patrolling according to one’s own restrictions, provided it be agreed upon by a high-ranking official), Mari gained more freedom and allowed herself to venture outside of the house. It was then that she met her first Wise Woman.

Wise Women were a subject best not to broach lightly with Mari, seeing as she always held a tender spot in her heart because of her mother’s death. She was sure that, had there been a Wise Woman present at her birth instead of an ancient midwife who had probably been half-senile as well, her mother would have survived and her entire life would have been different. Before her death, her mother had been renowned for her dancing ability and her beauty. Surely she would not have had to grasp at coppers whilst growing older, in a slum.

Mari had been walking rather quickly (okay...running) down the small street on which her house stood, excited about the new day and what it would bring for her. Unfortunately, her head must have been too far up in the clouds because she ran into someone.
Ceadre had glared at the adolescent, looming over her menacingly.

Her first words to the startle girl were: “Well?!? Pick it up!!”
Ceadre had gestured strongly to a basket Mari must have knocked from her grasp. Ceadre snatched it firmly away from the girl when she held out a trembling hand to return it to its rightful owner, then peered suspiciously inside, muttering. After a minute or two, she grunted, seemingly satisfied, then turned to appraise the still-nervous Mari.

“I suppose you’ll do.”

Thus was how Mari became Ceadre’s assistant of a sort, she went to market and got herbs (for that was what she carried in her basket), did odd jobs around the house, and ran errands for the woman. After a while, Ceadre started to leave more and more of these over at Mari and Andar’s home when she visited, and when Mari finally confronted her about it, Ceadre merely sniffed and told her that she never knew when something might come up. So, an extra set of herbs was soon found in the al Ceare home.

Fortunately, or unfortunately (depends on how you take it), that something did come up. During Mari’s fifteenth year, she began to have dreadful headaches and sometimes felt dizzy during the day. Ceadre couldn’t, or would not, as she was later to find, diagnose the symptoms. Mari channeled for the first time that year, and during the next year, several occurrences happened when she channeled unknowingly. Firstly, objects in her home moved on their own, sometimes becoming rather dangerous. Andar was unfortunately the most common one to discover these surprises. Always, she sent for Ceadre who would come, patch him up, and sweep out the door muttering to herself.

It wasn’t until her mid-16th year that she found out that she could touch saidar, and it was yet again through one of her and Andar’s “accidents.” This time, however, instead of leaving quickly, Ceadre sent Andar away after treating him and told Mari everything, and her plans to send the girl to the White Tower to study and train her skills.

Prevalent was shock at the thought of being Aes Sedai, but also excitement. The real treasure Mari brought away from this encounter was that for the first time, Ceadre called her Marreane, and she accepted the ideal of being a woman. This was a gift that Marreane never expected, meaning much more coming from the woman she had come to accept as a mother figure and mentor. She donned the necklace from that point on, and often uses it to remind herself not to slip back into childish ways.

The stage of Marreane’s life that is now beginning is sure to be filled with learning and trials, study and danger, but she will weather it as she always has. Her desire to be Yellow Ajah reflects her values- she would like nothing better than to be able to heal anyone within her power, for the saving of a life is one of the greatest gifts anyone can receive.

(I also fixed some spelling mistakes ^_^. Ceadre is a character I created in order to help Marreane grow older without all the hardships she would have had, being a channeler without any guidance. She won’t pop up anymore, but just is used to make her history a bit easier to write.
I enjoyed writing this, so I hope you enjoy reading it!)

don't worry about it hun, I changed the title, no harm done :)

it's a great beginning, but the thing about Ebou Dari girls wearing marriage knives - I do not have the books near me for reference, but I checked in in internet:
"In Altara, married and widowed women wear a knife around their necks that is known as 'the marriage knife.' At the wedding ceremony, a man gives the knife to his bride, telling her that she can kill him with it if he ever displeases her. " - TarValon.Net Library

the lack of the marriage knife is a big motive in your bio, if you need any hlep thinking of a similar motive that'll have the same impact, PM me and I"ll be happy to help :)

otherwise - just tell us when you've edited, so we can read and approve ;)

Looks fine to me, altho Lyla has the last word, I am only a lowly moderator. -.-'

I did want to compliment you on your research and understanding of the different Nation's culture, I respect the amount of work you put into the scenario to make it true to the books.

Keep up the good work!
