History:
Zaide was born the son of a farmer and his wife, they lived fairly near Caemlyn, but Zaide's father did not like the city life, so they stayed on the farm. Zaide, however, loved the city, and went with his father into Caemlyn whenever he could. He was his parents' only child, though often times all three of them wished there was at least one more around. Zaide decided early on two things, one was that he would live in the city one day, the other that he would not doom his children to growing up without siblings. Living on a farm, Zaide not only had no siblings, he had very little interaction with other children, when he went into Caemlyn his father was too paranoid to let him play with the children there. Zaide became a withdrawn child before he reached ten, finding ways to amuse himself that did not require other people. He loved animals, and wished his father had animals other than sheep and horses, what he really longed for was something he could come to know.
When Zaide was twelve, he went into the city with his father, finally convincing the man to let him see the sights. Almost as soon as he was out of his father's sight, Zaide ran directly into a black-dressed man. The man was unmoved, but Zaide fell to the ground, and when he looked up he looked into a severe face he could not put an age to. Zaide had heard stories before, but he did not remember anything like this. He scrambled back to his feet, muttering apologies, but the black-dressed man said nothing. Finally, just as Zaide turned to get away, the man spoke. Zaide could not recall his exact words, but the man had identified himself as Asha'man, and told Zaide that the Black Tower would be back for him.
Zaide did not know what this meant, but he did not like it, he ran immediately back to his surprised father, making the excuse that he did not want to see the city that much after all. Over the next six and a half years, Zaide's mind often drifted back to that day, though he could never figure out what the man had meant. Over the years, Zaide became more withdrawn, and even his love of animals died. He began to spend as much time as he could entirely alone, except for when he went to Caemlyn. His parents did not understand, but they did not press, their life was busy enough as it was.
Six and a half years after that first meeting with the Asha'man, two men and a woman arrived at Zaide's home. One of the men and the woman had the same ageless look the Asha'man had, and so Zaide placed them as Aes Sedai and Asha'man. The only thing he could think of for the other man was a Warder, but whether to the man or woman he never found out. The Asha'man tested Zaide, and announced that he could channel. Finally, what the man had said so long ago made sense. Zaide had tried to deny it at first, then said adamantly that he would not go to the Black Tower, he had no desire to become Asha'man. Finally, the visiting Asha'man had threatened to use force, and said that Zaide had best come willingly, because any other way would be painful. Even so, Zaide was reluctant, and it took a sharp whack with the Power to convince him.
Without even giving him the opportunity to say goodbye to his parents, the Asha'man and Aes Sedai whisked him off, saying that the sooner they got back to the Tower the better. After several months' travelling, Zaide finally woke one morning and saw a huge building in the distance, no, it was two buildings. The Aes Sedai told him that that was Tar Valon, and that within the week they would be there. From that day Zaide fell into a sullenness that he had never experienced before, the truth of what was happening had been denied the whole way, but now it was not possible any longer. He fell behind his companions several times over the next week, often earning stripes with the Power, and once a physical blow from the Warder.
Even his reluctance could not keep the excitement from Zaide's face when the entered Tar Valon, this city was even larger and more magnificent than Caemlyn! However, when they reached the Tower Walls he had sunk in on himself again, feeling the full weight of his destiny before him, it was not the one he would have chosen. His travelling company left him once inside the gates, saying only to find the Master of Soldiers. Not even a good luck, or this is the beginning, do well. Zaide had set off to do just that, and though he wished he would never find the man, eventually he made his way through the Tower's maze to his office to begin his life as a soldier.
