Title: Learning to write/read (Open for everyone)

Jayon Theran - October 6, 2004 06:03 PM (GMT)
He opened the door to the part of the building he had been directed to when he asked another recruit for directions leading to the library of the tower. Jayon had come to the conclusion after another class that he needed to learn writing and reading properly. He couldn't carry on 'writing' like he did now during the classes. He needed notes that he would be able to read. In his old home on the farm, none of this had been or would ever have been necessary to learn. Thus, his skill in writing and reading was very, very limited. He had read a few of the books his father bought from the caravans of trading wagons that sometimes passed close to his former home. Now, another kind of writing and reading was needed though. He was sure there were tons of books he could learn from here. Sword forms as well as other things. Closing the door behind him he stared in awe at the immense collection of books here. So this was a library....My father definatly would have liked to see this..., he thought. All the money a village could scrape together couldn't buy a tenth of these books. He shook his head, still staring.

Brushing a few strands of the light brown hair from his eyes, and correcting his simple shirt he began walking through the 'corridors' between the bookcases. He checked the books titles, searching for a simple book or a book that could teach him to write and read properly. After a bit of searching, Jayon takes out a book from a bookcase, not very thick, and goes to sit down at one of the tables in a comfortable chair. He picks up the quill, ink and parchment from his pocket and places them on the table. The young man begins reading the book. Very slowly, at first, but increasing in speed eventually. He takes notes, focusing entirely on making them readable and as clear as he possibly can.

He has stopped noticing the world around him, passing people of all ranks and is absorbed by his studying and trying. Not a enjoyable way to spend his time, but it was definatly necessary. Writing will be essential later on as well. If i fail here, i could work as something else, he thought. Life was open before him, and the possbilities his for taking. After half an hour of writing he walks off to get some water from a nearby tray. He returns quickly, going back to his work. He noticed now there were mostly females in here. And quite a few of them passing his position.

Picking up everything on the table, Jayon moves further in the library to find a secluded table where no one would pass. After a bit of walking, he finds one, in one of the corners. Not very much light here, but enough for reading and practicing. Smiling to himself he sits down again and continues his study.

Shaya looked up from her book wit a disgruntled look. She had come to the library with the sole purpose of catching up on her studies. There were a few subjects she needed to know more about and this time of day was just about the only oppertunity she had between classes and her chores to sit down for some quiet reading. Apparantly everyone else had had the same thought though and Shaya was constantly distracted from her book by people passing and even bumping into her! When a plump novice nearly tripped over her foot as she passed, Shaya gave a deep sigh and closed the book in front of her. She was going to have to find a quieter spot before she killed someone.

She stood from the table she had been sitting at and made her way down the isles of books, knowing that there were a few quiet corners in the back where no one like to sit because the light was bad.
She was surprised therefore, to find someone had beaten her to the spot. As she approached the table she found what appeared to be a young recruit bend intently over a piece of parchment. She assumed it was a recruit, for he did not have the Soldiers black on him. He was concentrating so intendly on what he was doing that his nose almost touched the paper. Shaya had to smile, it looked so endearing.
From what she could see from him, she thought he must still be very young. Most the recruits already seemed to be grizzled old warriors when they came to the Towers to be a warder, she wondered what had brought him here. She could not resist casting a quick look on what he was concentrating on and had to smile again. It appeared he was merely practicing his writing and from the looks of the letters he could use it. If he was concentrating so much he had not even seen or heard her approach, he was probably not going to be much of a distraction if she sat there to read her book. She shifted her position and gave a small cough to alert him to her presence, giving him a friendly smile when he looked up.

"Mind if I sit at your table to read for a bit? I promise I won't keep you from your work. I'm actually looking for a quiet spot to sit and read my book for a bit." She held up the book she picked on the Forsaken to illustrate what she meant. She noticed his eyes were very green when he looked up and he was indeed as young as she had thought at first glance. He didn't look like he had that roughness about him some of the Warders did yet, or the Blackcoats' arrogance. She thought it would certainly make a refreshing change to speak to a man that wasn't so full of himself it was sickening.

Jayon had progressed a bit when the novice arrived and he was intently focusing on writing down a sentence in a readable hand writing. Something he actually managed to do, which made him pleased. It wasn't 'that' hard, as long as you really tried. He would not have that much time for writing down notes during lessons, so he needed to practice more so that he actually could write readable in a quick pace. Wiping his forehead with his fingers, he continued. Sighed. This is more exhausting than sword practice, in some ways!, he thought and shook his head before continuing. He then heard a small, audible cough behind him. He turned around and looked up, saw a girl in her 20s. Clad in white. A novice, obviously. Respect, here as well. What was it..well..not a complete bow. But at least some manner of decency and etiquette where good to show to everyone, even to servants. Jayon stood up from his chair, flourishing half a bow towards her and nodded towards her as she spoke to him. "Greetings....my lady" She was short. Well, not especially short compared to other he had seen. But he couldn't help noticing how short most people actually were, compared to him.

"Mind if I sit at your table to read for a bit? I promise I won't keep you from your work. I'm actually looking for a quiet spot to sit and read my book for a bit."

He was startled at first at the question. Were novices and recruits allowed to sit together? if they were, there 'should' be a law or a rule against it. And well...he did mind a bit. But then again, he couldn't think of 'why' he would mind her sitting here except the fact that she was a girl. Or a woman, more correctly. She seemed to be a age where she could talk with his own mother at home, who would be older, but nontheless, this person was a mature woman. He had thought all novices would be..girls. In his own age, seventeen, perhaps a bit younger or older. Obviously, that was not the fact. He also noticed her black hair and...green eyes, like himself. He smiled. Green eyes were very unusual. He had only seen a few with that eye color in his whole life, and two of them here at the tower. And she was slim, he thought. But with all those...things, that marked women to be women. Jayon pondered for another while.

"I guess i don't mind, no. If it is only reading..."

He replied at last, and sat down on his chair after pulling the chair on the other side of the small table out so she could sit down. Just common manners. His mother had both talked him into and beaten him into remembering them. Pulling chairs out for women was one such thing. He picked up the quill from the parchment again and dipped the tip in the black ink, slowly writing down his name on the paper in a quite acceptable handwriting. He blew a bit against the ink so that it would dry faster, and read a bit in the book before him to find something else acceptable to write and practice.

"I guess i don't mind, no. If it is only reading..." Shaya raised an amused eyebrow as the boy cut off any intended conversation with those words. From any other she would have thought them arrogant, but the boy did not strike her as such.
He surprised her again by pulling out a chair for her, apparantly he had better manners than his lack of a perfect hand accounted for.

She wondered briefly what his background was and then decided that it was none of her business, nor did she have the time to wonder about it.
She settled hersef on the chair, layed her book on the table and got comfortable to finally do some quiet and undisturbed reading. She had only skimmed a few pages before she realised that the scratching of his pen made it almost impossible to concentrate on the meaning of the words she was reading. She sighed softly to herself as she looked up from her book. She wondered why she was so restless anyway. Normally she had no problem at all to focus. She could happily sit and read while a stampede went off next to her.

She studied the boy for a while, went back to reading and found herself looking up and staring in to space soon after again. She shifted irritably on her chair, her lack of concentration was starting to irritate her. I just need something interesting to do. All these classes and chores are mindnumbing... She missed the challenge of her old life, missed the exitement of never knowing where she would be the next dat. She was not used to being in the same place for so long.

Jayon noticed her raised eyebrow but decided not to say anything about it, nor talk to this woman. He needed to practice his reading, and that was what he would do. She sat down on the chair he had pulled forth, and he eyed her one last time before going back to his practicing. He scrawled down a few other words, read a few pages and wrote down some more. Focused on the task, though he probably made more noise while writing than another person would do, a person used to writing. But he was not used to it. He turned another few pages in his reading, glancing up to her and saw that she was looking at him again. He lowered his gaze again, looking at the table calmly, continued his writing. Did she have problems to concentrate herself? It was certainly not his fault, that. At least he hoped not. But then again, it was her choice of sitting here. Not his. So he continued his writing, trying to be a little less loud though. He knew what it was like not being able to concentrate, and it would not be just of him to at least not try being quiet.

THe book taught how to write well, among other things. it had many different chapters, and Jayon wanted to check them all and writing down what notes he could need for later, and for practicing. He noticed her looking up at him now and then, smiling slightly towards her once before going back to his reading again. What was her problem?, he wondered and scribbled down a few more things.
