History:
Marian had a very stable upbringing as a child. While her mother and father were not around as much as could have been hoped for, her maid, Seshi, became like a second mother, and Marian spent her time tied to Seshi's apron strings, learning to cook rather than accompany her mother to important meetings. Seshi was a close guardian through out her life at the Skylas manor, and she was closer to Marian that her own mother had been.
As an only child, Marian was rather spoiled, though Seshi tried to stamp it out. Any whining or complaining was punished, though Seshi spoiled the girl too, what with little treats or toys. Marian, however, under Seshi's influence, did not become the typical noble's child. She was not arrogant about her station, and she did not complain often. Whatever the case, Marian, going into her teen years, was a happy, kind young lady.
When Marian turned nine, Lady Skylas had a governess come to the manor to teach Marian. Governess Ilesa was a very stern woman, who believed in discipline and building character. Marian learned to read, write, and do arithmetic, but she also learned discipline. Governess Ilesa was also responsible for Marian becoming a lady. Marian grew to know different manners and to hold her shoulders straight. She was smart, and she carried much of what she learned through out her life, making Seshi quite proud.
The governess stayed until Marian turned thirteen. Then, her mother whisked her about Andor, to different places, subjecting her to different situations as a young lady. She was determined that her daughter would be a good noble of Andor. Seshi, of course, accompanied them through their travels. During this time, Marian grew closer to her mother, though Seshi still remained a strong guardian figure.
Seshi and her parents had taught Marian the fearful respect of Aes Sedai. While the Skylases did not believe that Aes Sedai were witches, they did not want anything to do with the White Tower. The thought of being able to channel never crossed Marian's mind. She was more concerned with the fact of what was to become of her.
Of course, it was only expected that she would marry and settle in her husband's estates. Though she as only fifteen, the prospect was still there. Her parents agreed upon not marrying her off until she was at least eighteen, perhaps not at all, if Marian continued to make good choices. So, in her teen years, Marian spent her time about her estates, reading and cooking with Seshi.
However, things were changed drastically when an Aes Sedai showed up at the Skylas manor, wanting to test all the young women in the house for any sign of channelling ability. Her parents were not so opposed to Aes Sedai to refuse such a request (though they may have liked to).
Marian was told that she did not have the spark to channel Saidar, however, she did have the ability to learn. From that point, she didn't have much choice. The Aes Sedai whisked her off to the White Tower and had her name enrolled in the Novice Book.
Marian was frightened of channelling, with her up-bringing and certain stories. As this was one of the few things she had not been exposed to, she did not know what to expect either. However, under the hand of Etain Sedai, she embraced Saidar. The radiance of the One Power quickly changed her mind about channelling, though she did not know why she would want to become Aes Sedai. Nevertheless, she worked hard, spending six years as a novice. In that time, she made many friends, including Kathera Galwyn, a trickster. She learned how to be a good novice, and she was not often sent to the Mistress of Novices.
At the age of 32, she was called to the three arches for her testing to become Accepted. She did not refuse - she had put too much work into being a novice to go back then. The arches changed something inside of her, giving her a focus and reason to be Aes Sedai. Her playful, kind side stayed, but she was determined to become Aes Sedai.
During her years as Accepted, Marian learned what would soon be her path and her quest. She decided that she wished to be a voice for those who could not speak. Taking this idea to heart, she decided that the best Ajah for her would be the Gray Ajah. She continued to work hard as Accepted. She was surprised when she was called to be raised. The Final Test made her even stronger as a woman, and some way or another, she did pass. She took the shawl of the Gray Ajah.
Shortly after being raised, she was informed by her fellow Gray sisters that she was to be the new Head of Ajah, due to the fact that the former had died, leaving preference for Marian to be the next Head. In Marian's belief, the other sisters only followed along because as a new Aes Sedai, she would be easy to manipulate. As this got in the way of her plans of being a voice to those who could not speak, since she could not leave the Tower, Marian grew angry. She decided to be the Head, yet her anger fueled her determination not to be taken advantage of.
