Title: An unusual place for studies (From Tel'Aran'Rhiod)
Description: Investigating a different realm
Cayana Alhi - December 5, 2004 08:03 PM (GMT)
((OOC: No Cayana is not a dreamwalker.))
Yawning Cayana looked at the ter'angreal laying on her bed. Before this night she had never attempted to get a first hand experience with her studies, none of the realms she had researched, but tonight she would. The ter'angreal required that she would fall asleep with it touching her. And with it she would step into tel'aran'rhiod. It was quite a thing to be nervous about, especially after all she had read. There was no one she trusted enough to ask for guidance and so she had had to disregard the first advice of Naria Sedai, the now dead dreamwalker who had written a few of those books Cayana had read on the subject.
Thinking about it all and all the warnings and tellings about the dreamworld she slipped under the covers of her bed and put the ter'angreal on her chest. She soon fell asleep and entered that which she sought. At first Cayana couldn't say that she knew she was in the dreamworld. The room she was in was no different then in the real world. She was in her bedroom, laying on her bed, in her shift, just the same as before she had fallen asleep. She did how ever see the difference in the light, and she felt a feel of people watching her.
After a while of poking around her own room dealing with the basics of how things around her worked, including channeling she walked out to her sitting room and up to the mirror there. One thing all the beginners books had told about was the ability for a person to change appearance and clothes at will and that concentration was needed to keep the clothes she wore. Watching herself she concentrated on that which she had worn earlier that day, a dark blue dress cut in the style of Arad Doman. As she saw it she couldn't help but to smile and think about the first time she had ever worn that dress. With the memory her hair that had been hanging loose suddenly was in a nice hair due just the way it had been that night. Cayana couldn't help but to shake her head at herself before leaving her room.
In the hall she looked around, there was no one there. She would now try something that she also had read about, 'shifting' Naria had called it. It was a thing about concentrating on a place and just 'shift' there by it. So Cayana concentrated hard on picturing a place she knew well. The gardens. At first nothing happened but suddenly the whole corridor blurred and she suddenly was standing in the garden. The snow beneath her shoes wasn't cold and there was no wind. This place is certainly strange. She thought to herself as she walked over the yard between the two Towers looking at the surroundings. Very strange. She had no idea that while she walked her appearance, as to clothes and how her hair was put, kept shifting. She had completely forgotten about concentrating, as she was to busy investigating this place called tel'aran'rhiod.
Mishael - December 5, 2004 08:28 PM (GMT)
Glow Storm had a habit of checking into the wolf dream every once and a while to try to contact some of the wolves who he had met on his travels. Most were residents of the wolf dream, Mishael was getting older than he thought, but they still knew about what was happening in the world. Suddenly, Glow Storm senced something new, some one had entered the wolf dream. Glow Storm had always had an odd ability to sence when someone entered the dream consiously, almost like he was able to see the ripples on a pond. The sence was comming from the White Tower. Glow Storm broke off his confersation with Night Wind and stalked his prey.
He made small shifts, from outside the city, to just inside the city walls, to outside a tavern. He never stopped long in one place, if his prey saw him they might just think he was someone who had dreamed themself into the Dream. Just as he reached the tower gates, the feel shifted. Who ever it was was now in the Gardens. Glow Storm concentrated on his apearance, something that was second nature to him now, Glow Storm was invisable, who ever it was would see right through him. As he aproached the ripple's source, he became more stealthy, concentating on moving silently, thus he did. He then peered around a tree and saw the souce of the ripple effect.
He was wacing a short, woman walking through the gardens, her black hair was shifting between hanging down and being done up in a bun; her dress was shifting through every style of dress he knew, Domani, Tarabon, Shenar, Kandiri. The only thing about her that didn't change was her face, it was the face of an Aes Sedai, Cayana Alhi to be exact. Glow Storm concentated on being there, dressed in his formal Asha'man uniform, and spoke. "Good Evening, Cayana Sedai. You Shouldn't be wandering the Dream with out a guide."
Cayana Alhi - December 5, 2004 08:42 PM (GMT)
As she was walking along the snowy yard a voice suddenly voiced behind her. As she turned she looked at the Asha'man, Mishael, and smiled at him. He wore the uniform, a sign of authority and the same stern expression as ever. "I am aware of that Asha'man Mishael." She said. Was he going to lecture her? She hoped not, far to many Aes Sedai that believed themselves her betters had over time. She always hated it and since she knew emotions in this place could take the oddest effects she didn't want to get angry.
As she was about to add something she suddenly noticed how her dress had shifted, it was now green, and around her shoulders was the all to familiar shawl. With some concentration she made the thing disappear, she may be young but she didn't need that thing anymore. With an apologetic smile she spoke again. "Who would an Aes Sedai, who is not a dreamwalker, ask for guidance though?" She couldn't help but to ask that question. Sure there where dreamwalkers outside of Mishael and Kiren at the towers. But still, there where no one she trusted with even hearing the question asked. She didn't say she could handle herself, she just knew that would send sparks flying. At least it did when ever she had requested to be sent along to the borderlands when she was newly raised.
Mishael - December 5, 2004 09:10 PM (GMT)
After he spoke, her dress took on a tinge of red. Either she is angry of embarrassed Glow Storm noted. The Aes Sedai shawl vanished from her shoulders with visible effort, but Glow Storm didn't say anything. "Who would an Aes Sedai, who is not a dreamwalker, ask for guidance though?" Mishael knew the answer, and mentally ticked off a few names, Kiren, Nanaia, Sapphira, Lyla, Valarian and Glow Storm, but didn't say anything. If she didn't know abot them then they didn't want her to know.
"Well, I'm here now. You might as well tell me what you are here for. That way I can get us both back in bed quicker, time here runs oddly and sleep here isn't very restful." Glow Storm hoped she would tell him what she was doing here, then, if she was a Darkfriend, her plans would be thrown off. What ever they were.
Cayana Alhi - December 5, 2004 09:21 PM (GMT)
"Well, I'm here now. You might as well tell me what you are here for. That way I can get us both back in bed quicker, time here runs oddly and sleep here isn't very restful." Such an offer wasn't what Cayana was expecting, but then again she didn't know any of the reds. Not on a personal level anyway. "I know that 'sleep' here isn't very restfull. I'm not completely oblivious about this place, never the less I'm here to learn. That's all." She told him and shrugged slightly. It was what she was here for and to anyone knowing of Aes Sedai and that didn't know Cayana that statement would be incomplete and a play of words. It didn't say what she was there to learn, it could be anything. Cayana wasn't playing around, quite the opposite, she was straight with him and not avoiding anything.
She wondered what Mishael thought of her right then. She wasn't asking for anything, she was in a place she wouldn't be unless she was seeking something and where he had quite a take on her. He was the one with experience of this place, she didn't have any. Not yet. "So unless you are willing to teach, I guess I'm just keeping you." She could learn on her own. She had gotten this far, hadn't she? And she wasn't doing stupid things as trying to fly or anything. Just the mere though was silly to Cayana.
Mishael - December 5, 2004 09:35 PM (GMT)
"I know that 'sleep' here isn't very restfull. I'm not completely oblivious about this place, never the less I'm here to learn. That's all." Learn what? Glow Storm thought. It was Glow Storm's duty to keep Darkfriends out of the wolf dream, and to him any nonred could be a Darkfriend. "So unless you are willing to teach, I guess I'm just keeping you."
"well, it looks like we had better get started. If you want to learn about the dream world, who better to learn from than a native of it?" Glow storm didn't really want to teach, but every student he had had here had a different perspective and different questions that beniffited Glow Storm's over all knowledge. Glow Storm created two chairs and a table, much like the ones in the training hall.
"If you are to understand one thing about this world, you must understand this, anything you want to do is possible. From writting without touching a pen, to flying." As if to emphasize his point, he invisioned his chair hovering a few feet above the ground.
Cayana Alhi - December 5, 2004 09:48 PM (GMT)
As soon as she had implied that she was keeping the Asha'man he responded with "Well, it looks like we had better get started." Cayana blinked without thinking first. He would willingly just teach her? Such a strange man, at least for an Asha'man. What was his motive? Perhaps he just wanted to make sure she wasn't a dark friend. The man was red after all, he could suspect her for things like that how ever ludicrous they where.
The Asha'man made two chairs and a table appear, similar to those in the training hall. This Cayana had read about. Making things appear out of no where, things where never as they seemed. The only thing that actually was hard was to change things that where present in their own world, like the position of a building, moving a book, things like that. As she mentioned the flying she did rise an eyebrow at him. Any channeler could lift a chair in the air, but flying how ever was something quite different. To prove that she wasn't completely uneducated about the matter she looked over at the table and concentrated on something she saw daily. Suddenly, on the table, there was a candle in it's holder burning with a nice little flame dancing. "Yes, I also understand that channeling is quite inferior to that here?" It wasn't a question but she emphrased it as such just to not upset her teacher. She knew quite a bit, what she wanted was to know how to do it. See it for herself and through that understand it better then she did by reading a book.
"How does things react if two different persons try to do two different things to the same thing though? What will happen?" The book hadn't been clear on this. Just the thing about imagining things and it begin possible was almost unbelievable when you read those books.
Mishael - December 5, 2004 10:02 PM (GMT)
Cayana visible focused her will and a candle appeared on the table. "Yes, I also understand that channeling is quite inferior to that here? How does things react if two different persons try to do two different things to the same thing though? What will happen?" She seemed to have plenty of questions, and Glow Sttorm was ready to answer all of them. It seemed that she was here to learn about the world in general, but that could just be a cover up.
"You are correct in thinking that channeling is second rate here. If I were to focus hard enough, I could shield you from the source with out even thinking about the source." Glow Storm would normally have punctuated that with a demonstration, but he felt it was unnessisary. "As for your second question, the person who's focus and consentratio is stronger will win." To emphasize this, he mae the candle vanish with little effort.
Cayana Alhi - December 5, 2004 10:09 PM (GMT)
The candles vanished as Mishael showed his abilities and excessive experience. Cayana almost felt talked down to at that moment, but she kept her calm. She was here to learn and he was willing to teach. "How did you know I was here? Or did you stumble on me by chance?" She looked over at Mishael and gave him a weak smile. The man would let her know what he wanted she knew that, but she couldn't help but to be curious. She didn't need to go over the basics of tel'aran'rhiod, all that was covered by the books. She wanted to learn that which wasn't in there. "Your presence just felt so sudden it didn't seem like a coincidence."
Even though what Mishael was covering was basics something still stuck in her head, the part about him being able to block her from the source by just imagining it. Now that was a scary thought. Channelers in general didn't like to be blocked, Cayana wasn't any different. She was just glad he hadn't show her that as well as the candle.
Mishael - December 5, 2004 10:19 PM (GMT)
"How did you know I was here? Or did you stumble on me by chance?" she said while smiling weakly. "Your presence just felt so sudden it didn't seem like a coincidence." Glow Storm quickly desided how to answer. His ability wasn't well know, but he and Nanaia had experimented with it and they found no way to protect against it. After a few moments of mentally reviewing the possible reprocussions, he answered her
"I found you due to an odd ability that I have. I am able to sence the location of a person who is aware of their presance in the world of dreams. I didn't stuble on to you, I can't stumble onto anyone who knows they are here. The sence I get is very hard to describe, it is some what akin to any ones ability to find where a peble broke the surface of a pond. When you arrived here, you began to set of vibrations, and I can track those as easily as a wolf can track a scent."It seamed like she would be asking him specific questions instead of the general questions a new comer to the world would.
Cayana Alhi - December 5, 2004 10:27 PM (GMT)
An odd ability indeed, but not much different then a channeler feeling an other channeler channel if they did it to a large enough amount. "I see." She said and nodded. "The books tell about that people can get hurt here and if they get hurt they will be equally hurt in the 'real' world. A moment ago you mentioned that you could block me from the true source if you wished. I was just wondering can one heal a person here?" These where no beginners questions and Cayana knew it. She had been studying this for to long to have just beginners questions. It was an interesting question though when it came to her research. Properties of different realms where different, this one more so then any of the others she had read about, but it didn't mean that others couldn't be equally as weird. If one couldn't heal here, where there other worlds who were in the same way? These where things going on in Cayanas head at the moment. She had completely dropped thinking about Mishaels reason for teaching her.
Mishael - December 5, 2004 10:35 PM (GMT)
"I see." She said and nodded. "The books tell about that people can get hurt here and if they get hurt they will be equally hurt in the 'real' world. A moment ago you mentioned that you could block me from the true source if you wished. I was just wondering can one heal a person here?" Definately not a beginner question Glow Storm thought. What does she expect to do with this knowedge? she isn't brown so she must have a reason.
"No, you can't Heal here. if a person is phisically injured here, they recieve that injury in the waking world at that same time. And no matter how hard you try, you cannot alter the waking world from the dream world. but, you can ignore the injury and the pain here and not feel it at all, but the you risk bleeding to death in the waking world. If you are injured here, it is best if you wake imedialtely, even if it is just a pin prick, there could be poison on that pin." If only there were a way for a student to understand this with out experimenting for them self, but Glow storm knew that Cayana would end up trying this on her own the moment Glow Storm left. all the more reason to stay with her.
Cayana Alhi - December 5, 2004 10:45 PM (GMT)
Listening to Mishaels explanation Cayana nodded. It seemed reasonable enough. "So you can poison a person here? Wouldn't that be to affect the real world and not to do something here?" She couldn't help herself from asking. It was an interesting topic after all. As she was asking all these questions she looked over at the chairs Mishael had made before. Ignoring that it was just a wooden chair and would probably be uncomfortable she sat down, first concentrating on that the chair would actually be there. First when she felt it there she relaxed and leaned back waiting for Mishael to sit as well, for the moment it wasn't as much show as it was tell.
Ever since Cayana had come to the Towers she had heard about how the Dragon Reborn had taken the last battle to a different realm, like tel'aran'rhiod, or the ways or somewhere similar. There they had fought it out away from the world, sparing it from the destruction such a battle would bring. Before she had arrived here she had not quite understood that part from the stories and so she had spent quite some time trying to figure out what it all meant. But the Aes Sedai weren't lenient with novices, they had no reason to and so before this she had had no real experience or understanding of realms outside of the one she lived in. As it was, Mishael probably could let her learn or make her leave, with his ability she wouldn't be able to learn anything here without him knowing it. If he didn't want her here he could terrorize her until she left. She was just glad Mishael had decided to teach her instead.
Mishael - December 5, 2004 10:57 PM (GMT)
"So you can poison a person here? Wouldn't that be to affect the real world and not to do something here?" Glow Storm had an answer for this, he had often been asked this in times past. Before he could answer, she sat down. Glow Storm Sat awell, adding a smal cusion to the seat of his chair.
"Yes, you can be poisoned here. it is actually very easy, but it requires that the poison enter your system as it would in the waking world. It might be possible to poison someone with out administering it through food our a weapon, but it would be too difficult. A person is naturall aware of their own body, and, especially for an Aes Sedai of Asha'man, it is very difficult to change the make up of a person's body." Glow Storm had no clue as to weather he was discribling it well enough for her.
Cayana Alhi - December 5, 2004 11:08 PM (GMT)
"So what you are saying is that it is possible as long as you make the person eat something here or hurt a person with weapon. But as for imagining it the awareness of one's own body would surpass the concentration of anyone else trying to influence their bodily systems?" If it was so then it would be understandable, if she had gotten it wrong he would have to correct her. It was quite a long time since she had enjoyed being taught, but she was actually starting to now. Mishael might look stern and not really a man one could easily work with, but he was quite willing to share this world with her and so she would enjoy that as long as he kept that opinion. She wondered though how he would have reacted if she would have asked him this in the normal world before she came here. Some how she didn't imagine the conversation to flow so 'easily' as it did now.
"Naria Sedai mentions in her book nightmares in the context of this place. What does she mean by that?" The question came almost out of no where. To Cayana the question was as logical as any other, but to some one else it might seem random. She was trying to get answers to that which she had been wondering about as she was reading, that was the whole point of being here. If the books had covered all the questions that had popped up in her head she wouldn't have had to come.
Mishael - December 5, 2004 11:18 PM (GMT)
"So what you are saying is that it is possible as long as you make the person eat something here or hurt a person with weapon. But as for imagining it the awareness of one's own body would surpass the concentration of anyone else trying to influence their bodily systems?" Glow Storm nodded, this student seeme very perseptive.
"Naria Sedai mentions in her book nightmares in the context of this place. What does she mean by that?"
"I was wondering how long it would take you to ask that. As you know, if you consentrate hard enough on something, it exists here. Some times, a normal person will dream themself here in the middle of a nightmare, and thus their nightmare exists here. Most of the time, the nightnare vanishes with the dreamer, but every once and a while it stays. and that is what you have to be wary of. " Glow Storm invisioned on of the never born, bound in chains, floating three feet in the air over the table. "it is easier to create a nightmare than it is to destroy one, but you can destroy one mearly by envisioning it not being there." The never born vanished and Glow Storm looked inquisitively at Cayana, as if asking her if she had any more questions.
Cayana Alhi - December 5, 2004 11:34 PM (GMT)
"I was wondering how long it would take you to ask that." Cayana couldn't help but to smile as he said that. She almost felt like she had at her lessons with the browns as a novice. Almost. She listened carefully as he explained it all and couldn't help but to feel quite a bit uncomfortable when he so easily created a Myrddraal out of no where. She actually embraced Saidar shortly before realizing it wasn't real. Shadowspawn was something she hated more then anything. She should have realized that he would pick something like that to show her as he told about nightmares. "I think I understand." Cayana said feeling that prior comfortable feeling to this lesson to have passed.
Time did flow differently here then in the waking world and so since the lesson wasn't quite as comfortable anymore Cayana thought it would be best to end it for the night. "Thank you, Asha'man Mishael. You explain well." She smiled at him again. "Perhaps we shouldn't go any further tonight though. We both will need some sleep tonight." To not get any at all would be foolish even with her routine days as they had been for the past weeks.
Mishael - December 5, 2004 11:40 PM (GMT)
"Thank you, Asha'man Mishael. You explain well." She smiled at him again. "Perhaps we shouldn't go any further tonight though. We both will need some sleep tonight." Unfortunately, Glow Storm wouldn't get any sleep tonight. He would stay here until dawn. He needed to make sure she didn't return. If she was a Darkfriend, she would be back. "Yes, I do believe it is time for some real sleep." It wasn't a lie, Glow Storm did think that it was time to get some real sleep. "If you wish to continue these lessons, just send a message to me to set up a time." Glow Storm smiled warmly at her. "If you need help waking from here, I will gladly send you to the waking world."
Cayana Alhi - December 5, 2004 11:50 PM (GMT)
The warm smile he gave her was quite different then any expression the man had given her before. But as he said the next thing she understood why. Light, how unpleasant would that be? She couldn't help but think that. "Thank you, I'll do that." She responded about the messages. "As for waking up, I think I'll try it myself first." She nodded as for good bye or just in appreciation. She didn't smile this time however, she actually didn't know exactly how to get out of here, but she still tried. As she did she felt a weird sensation and then suddenly everything that had been around her was gone, she was in her bed, staring up at the ceiling above. She was breathing heavily, but she was completely aware and knew she was awake.
Without hesitation she placed the ter'angreal in the drawer next to her bed and laid back down. She didn't have to look at the clock or anything to know that there wasn't long until dawn. She had lost many hours in tel'aran'rhiod, but it had been worth it. As soon as she closed her eyes she fell asleep and into her own, 'real' dreams. Dreams that didn't belong to the dreamworld at all.
Mishael - December 5, 2004 11:55 PM (GMT)
Glow Storm remained in that chair after the Aes Sedai had left. She seemed so full of questions, she must have been studying this for a long time. Glow Storm spent the remainder of the night conversing with the wolves, but he never faltered in his vigilant watch over the dream world. He only left when he felt the golden rays of dwn hit his eyelids.
