Girl, 10, Cuffed for Scissors in School

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A 10-year-old girl was placed in handcuffs and taken to a police station because she took a pair of scissors to her elementary school.

School district officials said the fourth-grade student did not threaten anyone with the 8-inch shears, but violated a rule that considers scissors to be potential weapons.

Administrators said they were following state law when they called police Thursday, and police said they were following department rules when they handcuffed Porsche Brown and took her away in a patrol wagon.

``My daughter cried and cried,'' said her mother, Rose Jackson. ``She had no idea what she did was wrong. I think that was way too harsh.''

Police officers decided the girl hadn't committed a crime and let her go.

However, school officials suspended her for five days. Administrators will decide at a hearing whether she may return to class, or be expelled to a special disciplinary school.

The scissors were discovered while students' belongings were being searched for property missing from a teacher's desk.

School district officials have promised a crackdown on unruly students this year, and new policies give administrators the power to expel students for infractions as minor as violating the dress code, chronic tardiness or habitual swearing.

Administrators say the steps are needed to regain control over a notoriously unruly school system, but some parents have complained that discipline has been overly harsh and that school officials have been too quick to call police about minor problems.

Oh.

My.

God.
I knew it. Others suspected it. This proves it. There are a growing number of moronic overreacting adults somehow gaining positions of authority in our school system. If you missed the stupidity in the article, here is a short list highlighting the major points:

1. Why are scissors not allowed in school in the first place? Where else would you be using them?
2. IT’S A F**CKING TEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL!
3. She was ARRESTED for bringing SCISSORS to SCHOOL.
4. She was then SUSPENDED for FIVE DAYS and they are considering EXPELLING her.

You get the point. I only hope these MORONS are somehow weeded out before we start raising our children into uber-sensitive assholes.

...I hate society, :BOOM:

Oh my God. That's ridiculous! She was ARRESTED for scissors? That is just idiotic. Somehow, I think the cops have a lot more important things to be doing than arresting fourth graders with scissors. What is this world coming to? *grumbles to self*

Some rules I can deal with, like the no having ibuprophen or Advil in your backpack, since they are drugs. Fine. But no scissors? And they want to expel her? What the hell?

well i never had to deal with dumb stuff like that. we were even allowed to carry meds just along as we didn't share. and if it was prescription it had to have our name on it. oh well college life is way better yup :)

Nice one, cops. Arrest a ten year old girl for taking sissors to school. You know, with old age, cops get extremly stupid. really.

Sidivin Yahbree - December 12, 2004 05:31 AM (GMT)
Actually, it isn't really the cops fault. They were just doing as they were told. Part of the job. It's the Admins at the school and the teacher who are at fault.

Wow. *blink* I do believe most of where I used scissors before the age of twelve was school. I'm pretty sure I learned to use scissors at school. :P Schools are SO crazy, a bunch of kids did an "80's work day" at school a few weeks ago, they all dressed up in multi-colored sweat clothes, sweatbands nsuch, and most of them got sent home. :eyebrow However, none of the sluts or jocks got sent home. Zek will support me on this one. :P Not exactly getting arrested for scissors, but just another example of stupid administrators.

Here's another more personal experience I've had with the Adults:

CD players are not allowed in our school. At all. I could understand just not having them in class because this is obviously a distraction for some kids, but they are banned EVERYWHERE in the school. Even during lunch.

Oh, but there is more! In my Economics class the teacher likes to turn on the radio sometimes when we are just taking notes or whatnot. A couple days ago we were doing NOTHING in class. Half the class was sleeping, the other half was just messing around. She turned on the radio to some crappy old people music and so my friend decided to put his own headphones on and take a nap. A few minutes later, she noticed him and sent him to the VP's office and he got his MP3 player taken up and was suspended for a day, get this, FOR DISRUPTING CLASS.

1) The teacher had her own "music" playing. If that's not a distraction...

2) We were doing NOTHING. What did he distrtact from? Gossip?

3) He would not have gotten in trouble at all if he had just taken a nap. What difference is it to the rest of the world whether or not he has music when he naps?

Grrrr...

*Still hates society* :BOOM:

heh yes society is evil. George Carlin has a whole routine on it called F*ck the Children. He goes on to say that adults are keeping kids from everything that's fun. And that the more "dangerous" stuff woks as natural selection. The kid who swallows too many marbles doesn't grow up to have dumb kids of his own. Some pretty funny stuff

*scratches chin*

This proves that common sense has fled most people. Oh, well. *sighs*

Kathera Galwyn - December 14, 2004 12:13 AM (GMT)
*laughs at general school stupid stuff* ah... you poor friend.... *giggles uncontroably*

Hmm, in my school...the administrators are much nicer. Go Norway!

Me and a friend was playing with his knuckledusters today, and our teacher began telling us how he had kicked ass without knuckledusters in his younger days. I actually brought a Sami knife to school last week and no one cares really.

Sami' knives are really cool, but very large and cumbersome, mine is 25 cm long, and I bought it cos it reminds me of the Aiel knives.

Where did this poor girl get arrested for bringing scissors to scool?
