Title: Some help please?
Description: with an application letter in english
Kiren Thym - April 10, 2005 03:37 PM (GMT)
OK, so as some of you might know I'm hoping to get an internship in sweden for 4 months next year. I've already found a place to stay and a place where I'd love to do that internship, but the thing is, if they reject me then I'm in trouble since I cannot do an internship in Belgium anymore. and this entire sollution is manageable qua money for a few specific reasons only. So I'm afraid that (besides the fact that the company greatly appeals to me as well) this is an All or Nothing thing for me and I want my application to be as good as it can get.
So I spent my entire day writing this puppy and would like to send it before the day ends (or before next morning) and I'd really really love to hear your opinions on it and even more, your critic and how you'd say things differently.
please help me on this one for it means a lot to me.
(off course all this is nicely fitted on two word-pages etc)

Information about an international internship
Mr Pettersson,
When I started in the three years curriculum of Office Management almost two years ago; I was immediately confident that I wanted to take the course of Management Assistant International Business (as opposed to Medical Management Assistant or Management Assistant Sales). The path appealed to me because of the possibilities it offers and how, during the international internship it requires, one gets to grow in a different way then when they stay in the same country during their entire study curriculum.
This feeling has not changed over the two years that I have been studying at the Plantijn Hogeschool (College); on the contrary. In the project about Agfa-Gevaert that we had to do last year and the classes of both these years, the feeling has only been growing. It is the conviction that in order to actually get a real feeling of the occupation, I have to learn to stand on my own two feet and get experience in a different environment than the one I grew up in, something that I believe will help me adjust to change as well.
And learning to adjust to change is one of the major reasons why I’ve chosen Sweden to look for an internship. Two years ago I had no particular preference at all in which country I wanted to get the experience of 4 months of foreign internship; but since a while that has changed as I got a friend who lives near Gävle. This will inevitably lead to a change in my life as I plan to one day move to Sweden and look for a way to continue on a professional level what I’ve studied here. An internship is in my opinion a perfect run up for this as it both broadens my horizons as gives me an opportunity to be submerged in the Swedish language and culture.
While searching for a suitable organisation to conduct this internship, the name of Sandvik was brought up. After browsing trough your website for a while, Sandvik gave me the impression of being an organisation which takes pride in helping young people and students in specific to broaden their horizons. (Though I did need some help of my friend on trying to understand the student page…) This image gave me hope to be allowed to be a part of the Sandvik team for four months next year; to grow, develop my skills, and to aid Sandvik however I can with those skills.
This is why my school, Plantijn Hogeschool, lets us do these internships after all; to learn and to grow. Therefore, this year too we will be doing an internship, but in Belgium and for only 8 weeks. In our information papers and contract the goals and tasks are given, so since we have not yet been given papers for our next internship I’ll briefly give those instead as to give an example of tasks my school expects me to fulfil for you.
The goal of the internship is to find a place to work during that time where I can actually use the knowledge and skill from school to help the company. It is to learn and evolve in doing tasks so that by the end of the period I can work on my own while I learned to adjust to the rhythm of the working place and the working, professional life. To take responsibility for myself and my actions and be able to evaluate how my presence has been useful in this new environment.
As for the tasks, well, this year it is expected that I can gain practical experience in a broad range of things, like handling incoming and outgoing mail, telephone calls, arranging appointments, making notes, minutes… I am also expected to use the computer for various applications and to help the organisation with filing and whatever other tasks they deem necessary.
As for the international internship next year, which I am hoping to do with Sandvik, these tasks are of course still really valuable, though the main focus here lays in adjusting oneself to the usage of a different language on a professional level and to the change in culture. There might also be any additional tasks that my school may provide, but since I prefer to be swift in finding a place to do my internship, I do not yet have the specifics that we will be given at the start of the next year, though I can already say that the internship will be somewhere between January and June.
Now, of course there has to be a reason for you to consider taking me in; I have to be able to offer you something. This would be the knowledge and skills that my studies have granted me. Office Management is a pretty broad curriculum which focuses on business life and skills. Therefore, for three years we get several classes on various computer applications (mainly the Microsoft Office package), a base of law, accounting and economics and a lot of language training that has been specifically oriented towards working in a business environment; this especially for Dutch, English and French.
I profoundly hope that I have managed to interest you and that my candidature will be taken into consideration for an internship and will of course be happy to provide you with any further information you would like on my school, the internship or me.
Yours sincerely,
Tessa Laenen
