I cannot wait to see this come onto the big screen and in my home. My favorite musical Rent is going to be written and directed by Chris Columbus!

Here is the article
QUOTE

Chris Columbus, director of first two Harry Potter films, has signed on to write and direct a feature film version of the hit Broadway musical Rent for Warner Bros. – that's according to today's Variety.

The trade tips that Warner Bros. recently acquired the movie rights to Rent from Miramax and brought Columbus onboard.  While at Miramax, Spike Lee was briefly associated with the project.
Variety adds that Miramax retains the right of first refusal to co-financing and distribute the film internationally.

Rent, by Jonathan Larson, is a contemporary version of Puccini's La Boheme that follows a group of struggling, bohemian artists who live in New York City's East Village.  The story centers around Mark and Roger, roommates who live in a tiny Alphabet City apartment.  Roger, an HIV-positive musician, meets Mimi, an HIV-positive exotic dancer with a drug habit and she shows him the importance of living for the moment.  Mark is an aspiring filmmaker who captures the lives of Roger, Mimi, and their other friends on film.

No other talent is attached to the musical adaptation at this time, but we'll keep ya posted on the latest.

Alright, RENT is also my favorite musical (I spent over 80 dollars to see it on Broadway when I was in New York and I actually got the nerve to talk to the guy who played Roger after the show, whoa) but I am SOOO not excited about Chris Colombus directing this movie. In fact I'm not even sure I want to see it made into a movie.

There is something to be said about the "rawness" of the stage production. It's just the bare minimum on stage which really lets the storylines of Mark, Roger, Mimi, Angel, Collins, Joanne, Maureen and Benny shine through. I'm worried that the beauty and simplicity in which Johnathan Larsen intended this show to be seen as will get lost in the making of a movie.

Maybe if the guy who made "Chicago" were making RENT I would be a bit more excited about it, but I think of Chris Colombus as more of a family themed director and RENT just isn't the most family friendly show.

I can agree with that, too. (So Jealous) I think that if he kept to the book of Harry Potter, he can do it. I just hope that he doesn't mess it up. Maybe that is why the WB chose him to do it. He also might be trying to branch out into new things. Let's give him the bennifit of the doubt until he messes it up.

Ok, but just until he messes it up. ;)

The news that came out of it: Columbus is committed to Rent; it will be the next film he directs.

What are your ideas [for "Rent"]?
My ideas are to make it very real, very gritty but to preserve the - there was a chance that Rent was going to go to television and I found out about that. I’ve been a fan of it for about 7 years, and I wanted to make sure it wouldn’t be homogenized, preserve Jonathan Larson’s initial play in tact. So what you will see on screen will be that play come to life with all of New York City as its star. So we’ll open it up a little bit, but I think in terms of atmosphere we’ll try to find new people, people you’ve never seen before, put a cast together of stars who can act and sing.

I'm so so so excited! He sounds like he's just like us!

Goody! If he's really smart though, he'll get the original Roger to play Roger.

See....I've never seen Rent, but I know enough about it to have had that same thought, Blue. Sorry I really like Chris, but I just don't see how he'll be able to pull this one off. Maybe I'm wrong, though.....maybe he's trying to change his image.

Blue! I cannot believe that the directors and casting crew did this, but one of the guys from the band 98 Degrees is going to play MArk! He doesn't even look like Mark!

Lyl, I told you this when you came over for dinner. He's just on Broadway. As far as I've heard, they haven't made any castings for the movie.
