Title: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Description: Discuss the book here. SPOILERS allowed.
bluejeanbaby - July 17, 2005 09:47 PM (GMT)
I know that there are several threads already on here where mini discussions are taking place, but I thought that it would be best to have a thread where we can openly discuss the book.
*If you haven't finished reading the book, you may or may not want to continue reading. Spoilers for the entire book will be throughout this thread. Do not complain that you get spoiled. Individual spoilers for certian aspects of the book will not, nor do they need to be, given.*
Ok, so start the duscussion.
I just have to say right now that this is my favorite book since (and even moreso) Prisoner of Azkaban. But all other discussion is going to be put on hold for a moment of silence, in honor of Dumbledore. :magic:

looked like he was going to die anyway.
bluejeanbaby - July 17, 2005 10:13 PM (GMT)
No way. Maybe in book 7, but not this soon. I was fully prepared for it to be Snape or Draco even, but not Dumbledore, and my heart is slightly broken as a result.

:rip: Poor Dumbledore, I never would have thought he would die like that.
bluejeanbaby - July 17, 2005 10:45 PM (GMT)
Changing gears!
What did you all think about Harry/Ginny? At first, I will admit that I wasn't happy about it. I felt as if their time had come and gone in CoS. But as the relationship progressed, I actually liked it. Moreso because I really like Ginny (and was thrilled at how much she was in this book) than the two of them together, but she was such an awesome support system for Harry.
But can Ron and Hermione get together already? Geez!

:rip: I so agree about Dumbledore.
On that note about Draco. He was so starting to turn good until those git D.E. entered. He was also double crossed by the D.E. with Greyback showing up.
Speaking of that werewolf, what on earth is going to happen to Bill? Poor Bill.
And ew! Phelgm! I couldn't stand her in GoF...I still cant stand that little girl. At least we know that she loves Bill. Hopefully there will be something else to celebrate in the 7th book.
bluejeanbaby - July 19, 2005 01:57 AM (GMT)
I've never really like Phlegm either, but I have great respect for her for sticking with Bill, and not just because he's going to look different. But because they don't know exactly what will happen to him. He was bit by a werewolf that was in human form. We'll have to wait and see.
Lylian_Mae - July 19, 2005 04:01 PM (GMT)
Yes I do definately respect her.
So who would have thought Tonks and Lupin? Really? Should we look and see if we can find clues in OotP?
bluejeanbaby - July 20, 2005 02:44 AM (GMT)
I'm not happy about that at all. I liked the idea of Tonks and Bill, but Lupin will forever (at least in my mind) belong to Sirius. It's just that simple fo rme.
Lylian_Mae - July 21, 2005 12:15 AM (GMT)
Speaking of Sirius. Does this mean that the motorbike he lent Hagrid in book one is now Harry's? Where is that thing anyways?
bluejeanbaby - July 21, 2005 12:38 AM (GMT)
I don't know. But that is a very good question.
Do you think that Draco actually has the Dark Mark or not?
Lylian_Mae - July 22, 2005 02:56 PM (GMT)
I don't believe so because there is no proof he set it off. Killing Dumbledore may have been his test to prove himself worthy of becoming a Death Eater. Possibly not just a scare and revenge tactic by LV.
LOL and :nosweat: check this...my ex thinks that Snape is still on Harry's side after reading the entire thing. WTFudge, right!
bluejeanbaby - July 23, 2005 03:07 AM (GMT)
I have to agree with Bryan. There is no solid evidence that Snape truly is evil. Yeah sure he killed Dumbledore, but we don't know what they had worked out between them. I'm not saying that Dumbledore made a deal with Snape to kill him to give Harry that extra push to cast the Unforgivable Curse against Voldemort, but the deal could have been somewhere along those lines.
Go back and re-read it very carefully. Other than the obvious fact that Snape killed Dumbledore, there isn't one single shread of solid evidence to support Snape being completely evil. Otherwise, he would have killed Harry too. He could have returned to his Master, triumphant.

On the topic of Draco having the Dark Mark, re-read the section where Draco's in Madam Malkins.
To answer the issue of why didn't Snape kill Harry-re-read the section starting where Snape kills Dumbledore and ending where one of the Death Eaters says that Harry's death belongs to the Dark Lord.

Thanks UweLudwig! I've gotta finish reading the first, but I'll get back to it soon.
Very true, Blue, but I highly doubt it was done on Dumbledore's orders. It could've been he valued his own life more and Dumbledore didn't know all of the Unbreakable Vow. Perhaps he wasn't aware of exactly what was going to happen.
bluejeanbaby - July 25, 2005 03:42 AM (GMT)
I have re-read both of those parts (Draco's and Snape's), but I still don't believe either one. If Draco does have the Mark, then he didn't get it of his own volition. He might have gotten it because that was what was expected of him or to make his father proud, but Draco is a bigger talker than walker (he talks the talk, but can't walk the walk). As for Snape, who knows why he didn't kill Harry. I still don't believe that he's completely evil. Up until this book, there has been no solid shrea dof evidence. And you can argue till you're blue in the face agains't me, but I really don't believe that JKR would do that. Build up a character who she could have shown any time before now to be evil, but she hasn't. And it's not in her style to do that. Not for six books anyway.
UweLudwig - July 25, 2005 11:29 PM (GMT)
I just re-read the part about Harry being the Dark Lord's, it was Snape who said it. The quote was-to the best of my memory-"We have our orders. Potter's death is the Dark Lord's" or something along those lines.

I just re-read the note in the horcrux, and I've got 2 theories to who it might be:
1) It could be Regulus Black, Sirius's brother, because Voldemort's followers called him the Dark Lord, and it never said why Regulus was killed ( he might have betrayed Voldemort).
2) It could have been Rabastan Lestrange (RAB!) because he could have once been a Death Eater, but turned good, found out about Horcruxes, and was killed for it.
