Title: New Washes!

GrouperKicker - May 25, 2008 03:39 PM (GMT)
I was at the Chicago Battle Bunker this weekend and got to play around with an advance preview set of the new washes.

I may be crazy... but if any of you are thinking about starting a new army or starting a TK army - I think that you may want to wait until the washes come out.
(I've got a ton of gnoblars to paint... I'm holding off until I can use the washes. I'll shade my ogres by hand, but the gnoblars... I can't see going crazy painting for 2 pts a model!)

Very nice... they seem to flow well. I can only imagine how easy it will be to undercoat with bleached bone and then slap on the brown wash... add some detail... DONE!

This after I have about 100 odd skeletons painted 'the old fashioned way'. These would have been nice to quickly get the rank and file done so I could focus on characters, ushabti, etc.

Not mine, found on a link on Coolminiornot.com. They look promising don't they?

I picked up a set of the new washes on Friday and have had a few minutes to 'play around' with them.

Painting them on straight from the bottle (as instructed), you get a bit of a 'goopy' feel when putting them on. Coverage seems OK... I still haven't tried to put two washes on next to each other. If the wash does not dry dark enough for you, throw a second coat on... it works quite well.

Early observations:
If you have lots of brown colors to wash, you are going to love the Devlan Mud. You can do some neat things over silver/boltgun metal with the red/blue/purple washes. The Badab Black is also nice... I saw it used over mordian blue on the gamesday 40k marine miniature and was impressed. Feels like you will be able to cover up sloppy painting with these - which is a big plus! Overall, I think that we will see nicer looking armies because of these.

However...
If you did any fine-lining with inks... you aren't going to get that with the washes. You better hope that thinning the foundation paints will get you the same effect OR stock up on the inks before they are discontinued. (I stocked up on blue/brown to finish my TK as I am already 1/2 way done with them using inks. My OK gnoblars, however are going to be washed. NO WAY am I spending tons of time on 2 pt models!!!!!)
