Title: New sections?
Gauntlet101010 - March 19, 2008 05:32 AM (GMT)
We've been here for some time and, I think, maybe it's time to expand ye olde forum by a section. So I put it to you ... select any two.
1) Video Games. It's a video game forum, right? Technically?
2) Forum Games / Spamnation. PMM suffered a lot of spam and this was called for a lot. Maybe it'd generate some hits?
3) TV, movies, books, and comics - An overall fiction forum.
4) Anime. Might be some overlap.
5) Fan Fiction. Or just Fiction. Rich first revived intrerst in this and, if there's anough desire ...
6) Sprite Rips and requests. This ain't no Sprites INC, but I did rule there as their god once.
7) Sprite Comics. Or just Comics. Just an entire section for it. To encourage people to post their wares.
8) Nothing Needed. Need not explain.

It's not really like the general forum here is getting flooded with topics, I don't really see a need for anything new, as it will probably just be underused.
Unless it's an anything goes forum, then I approve.

More sections sometimes promotes more posting.
A Forum Games / Spamnation type of forum would be more of an "anything goes" tho.
Akutare - March 19, 2008 03:32 PM (GMT)
Anything goes sounds fine to me.

The Spamnation Section could mean the rise of the "Lolthread", if there is a way to deactivate it assisting the postcount there, I am all for it.
As for the others, I am uncertain as to whether the Anime and the Games sections would need it, the current number of threads seem so infrequent for those two topics.
As for a Fiction Section, I am all for it. That would separate Art and Fan Fiction, which seems like a good idea.
But all in all, experimentation solves many a forum setup.

IIRC, invisionfree can have forums that disallow postcounts. :)

Most of those are fine in the sections we have. Generally, for smaller communities, the less sections, the better. Which is why it puzzles me to see forums with about 5 or so members with separate sections for anime, Sony, Nintendo, Sega, food products, clothing, etc... @_@; Only one of those I could see added is the "spam" forum... however, make it so that posts don't add to your total there, and enforce some kinds of special rules that prevent abuse of the section. Flood control will be a must. Generally, spam forums are complete and total hell when it comes to larger communities, but it might work on one this size...?

I like comics. I like fanfics. And there you have my answer.
Magnus Riujin - March 19, 2008 06:56 PM (GMT)
Sprites, and by extention, Sprite comics.

I've deactivated post counts in the self-promotion section of Critical Mass's forums, so I know that's right.
Forum games or non-Mega Man fanfiction would probably be good additions, but I don't think any of the other proposed sections would really be needed.
Gauntlet101010 - March 19, 2008 07:31 PM (GMT)
Even if we haven't talked on topics BEFORE doesn't nessasarily mean we will never talkl about them should a new section arise. People didn't talka bout Megaman at all until there was a seperate section specifically for it.
Liquid-Snake - March 19, 2008 08:14 PM (GMT)
I feel that a lot of those fall into the art category, and seem unnecessary right now. The other things all fall pretty well under the general discussion, besides the spam section. Video games might be nice, but then again, it would probably be fine just to talk about them in general like we do with movies and anime.
So I voted for video games and spam section.

Why does everyone care so much about poll-count?
I don't really see any of the listed possibilities as being much different from what we have going here... the spamnation might be helpful just because those people who are dying to talk about random stuff will have a medium to do so, but besides that...
Although the sprite requests gave me an idea for maybe some kind of commission board... people put in requests for sprites, artwork, whatever and people who are interested by the project can take the request? I dunno, maybe it's a little convoluted, but it could be cool.

I like the idea of the commissions section, it sounds good to me.

I want to add one more section, but am unsure of where to go with it. After all, we've had the same sections for a few years now and I'm bored with them.
Technically, it isn't all that different since "general discussion" can, in general, cover any topic not listed anywhere. Technically, under the above principal, we can do away with Megaman and Rants since, generally speaking, they're discussions that can go in "general" discussions. See where I'm going with this?
So, just because ANY discussion can find a home in general discussion doesn't mean we shouldn't add another section. Under the "if you build it, they will come" philosophy. If only to shake things up some.
Edit:
Think of it this way. Sure we can talk about "anything" in general. But sections do promote more discussions. Observe:
Rants: Even though people might have a perchant to rant, giving them a section to do so in encourages this. It even makes them feel more comfortable ranting.
Megaman: Although MM topics might pop up in General, having an entire secon on it makes one think about things they might wanna talk about.
BSP: Even though people will use general to advertise, more people will feel comfortable advertising in BSP AND it's a place to put it all.
SO
Although we can talk abotu, say, anime in general discussions an entire section will encourage more anime chat.
Although we can talk abotu video games in general a video games forum will encourage more video game talk.
Really, that's the idea. It's promoting a greater discussion of a topic the forum does already, NOT to really change anything we already do.
Captain Crashman - March 20, 2008 02:17 AM (GMT)
I just feel like just because we HAVE a video game board we won't necessarily talk about it anymore than we do now, and if we do it'll be threads that no one really bothers with.
I'd, however, be more than supportive of an anything goes spam board where I could tweak out and be myself and show off my totally retarded image folder
Gauntlet101010 - March 20, 2008 02:28 AM (GMT)
Well, I'm thinking on what people say and the votes as well. I just wanna be clear on the concept of why new sections are a benefit ... they don't nessasarily have to be revolutionary.

I didn't vote, but if I did it would count like 10 times over for a spam board. I need a place to take out my retardation.
Iga - March 20, 2008 09:41 PM (GMT)
I would say that a board for total spammery with the post count-increasing disabled would be a decent idea. And a board for discussion on general fiction would be good for when someone gets totally hooked on some novel, TV series, etc. and would like to have a real discussion about it.
