Title: Liking Megaman, a bad thing to some people?
Akutare - March 19, 2008 03:30 PM (GMT)
If this isn't allowed, then go ahead and close it.
This has been botherin' me for a while.
The future of Megaman and liking it still?
I still like Megaman, it's a game and series I grew up with since I first played Megaman 2 on the NES and watched Captain N. I collect the games, imported manga and art books. Even I still collect the figures from the Ruby Spears TV show.
However, some dead ends get on my case. Some people feel the need to bash Megaman. I.E call it "gay" or a "faggy series for kids." I once lurked on a forum and these peopel bashed Megaman calling it a "baby game" or "dead". I don't see it dead in my opinion. I will still willingly play the new series such as Star Force or Megaman ZX. I still perfer Classic and X however. Hell, I been told to ditch Megaman and play "better games" from someone on another forum.
Why does it seem like a bad thing to like Megaman to some people these days? They feel the need to bash it to be "cool" or have they never tried it? People's tastes do change.
I do feel comfortable speaking my mind on Megaman and I feel comfortble in the community.
Has anyone experinced the Megaman bashers or the people who have the "hate" towards it for no reason?
Gauntlet101010 - March 19, 2008 03:49 PM (GMT)
I don't really play new video games, so I don't get out much in that community.
But there'll be people who bash you no matter what you like. Me, I've only got a "oh yeah, I remember Megaman. Cool game, right on." when I mention MM.

Indeed.
The only new games I may play is probily ones on the Wii like Zack and Wiki or Super Smash Brawl. Hell, I still play Kirby games and such. I am still devoted to the Megaman series.
I once spoke to someone who didn't want to be my friend any more, because I liked Megaman over her "Cloud Strife". She said Megaman was stupid. I asked her if she played it. SHe said "I saw my boyfriend play it."
Belive it or not, Captain N is what started me to get into Megaman.
Gauntlet101010 - March 19, 2008 04:03 PM (GMT)
Coolness. The Captain started me on Megaman too, which is why it's image gallery is overly large. Nobody was interested in taking screenshots of it, so ... the gallery.
Sometimes people get overly attached to their franchises. Even if someone didn't like MM I wouldn't fight witht hem over it. I just ... wouldn't talk MM with 'em.
Marl Duothimir - March 19, 2008 04:44 PM (GMT)
You are talking to "Megaman's personal cocksucker", as I was known in high school before moving on to homeschool education.
Akutare - March 19, 2008 06:32 PM (GMT)
I will admit. I do like Captain N's look for Doc Robot. Hell, I didn't mind Megagirl in Captain N, either.
I also use ot draw Captain N's Megaman and Woodman alot also.
Naop - March 19, 2008 07:33 PM (GMT)
Over here, I don't get that kinda response when people learn I like Megaman. Well, in the worst case scenario, if it's a non-gamer, or an old dude, their reaction can be negative. But towards video games in general, not towards Megaman in particular.
In fact, you can come here and talk to the worst of the worst (kids in gangs, delinquents and the such) and they'll tell you that Megaman rules. Nobody thinks it's an effeminate game, or that it's a game for kids. It doesn't matter if you're a rich spoiled brat, or a little drug-dealing mafioso. Megaman games are up there in the pedestal of classic gaming coolness along with stuff like Mario, Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat (old school guys love arcades).
Particularly, Megaman X has always been considered a badass game over here.
Fenix - March 19, 2008 07:35 PM (GMT)
I get it from my brother a lot. He calls Megaman "childish", and he often wants me to play "cooler" games like Devil May Cry, which doesn't appeal to me. Sure, it looks cool, but it just... I don't know. I like "childish" games, like older games like Mario (which my little brother also calls childish. In fact, the only Nintendo games he does not consider childish are Zelda and Super Smash Bros). But I'll take being childish over being violent, mood swinging, and downright (not my brother: I'm talking about those who like to imitate games. Mortal Kombat, anyone?).
What's wrong with kids these days, anyways? What's wrong with liking games like Mario and Megaman? Is it because they're old, or because they suck too much to play them?
Akutare - March 19, 2008 08:30 PM (GMT)
I have a favourite NES video up on Youtube which showcases my favourite NES games. I also include Megaman games. Two people flamed me and called me "pussy" for having them in my list.
I clearly told them "It's my opinion and I can like what I want."

IT'S ALL ABOUT 'DEM HIGH DEF GRAFFICKS DOWN HURR, A-HYUCK-YUCK.
No, seriously, no one in my entire school seems to get the fact that while not being too dark and dull with overly bloomed graphics, a game can still be good. The only game most people would play on the SNES emulator me and my friend gave them in Communications class. And even then, most of them wouldn't touch the SNES emulator when someone brought in the Halo demo.
Kaos - March 19, 2008 08:49 PM (GMT)
You just can't expect everyone to like what you like, simple as that.
I've seen everything, people that bash MM and young people that thanks to me have discovered a charming old saga of videogames and are playing them in the NES emulators for the DS.
Akutare - March 23, 2008 04:03 AM (GMT)
I been around a whole slew of Megaman fans as is. From the Classic and X fans.. to the BN fans.
Whilest I am not a fan of the BN series, I still enjoy the games. Just some of the wild fans for it scare me.
Shift - March 23, 2008 06:19 AM (GMT)
-_-; ..Try being a pokemon fan. that series gets bashed alot more then magaman despite pokemon's gameplay being more complex then megaman. though i partially blame the TV show for that..

I am not much of a Poekmon fan. However, places like Gaiaonline or other places would attack a person who is older if they like Pokemon. I once saw a person compairin' Final Fantasy VII to Pokemon.
STARZ - March 23, 2008 05:21 PM (GMT)
I don't have many videogame fans in my school, and the popular videogame among them is the violent kind.
The ones that I noticed so far was me, and my best friend Alan, who's played a few BN games.
Besides, the name 'Rockman' sounds scarier than the name 'Cloud'. I mean, seriously..
They take one person's reaction and agree with it.
GaiaX6 - March 23, 2008 06:33 PM (GMT)
Well, I usually keep the bashing to myself when it comes to Kingdom Hearts or FFVIII and infact some other series rather than announce it to the world. it feels childish announcing what I hate to the world.

Pokemon is complicated...? I thought it went like this.
Fastest Pokemon that can hit the opponent with their weakness = Wins
Chaos Wolf - March 23, 2008 08:55 PM (GMT)
Not really, infact, the engine goes more like.
Fastest pokemon that can hit the opponent with their weakness takes off a good bit of health, and due to the fact it has less health than the other, it dies to the hit the wall sends out.
Liquid-Snake - March 23, 2008 10:31 PM (GMT)
Pokemon isn't that complicated. But that's like saying every game needs a complex control scheme to be good. As games like Zelda and Smash Bros prove, 1 or 2 buttons works just fine.
Now for those of you who are about to type up a response about EV training, or whatever the hell it is, just call your inside self down from screaming it out through your post to read this: Pokemon can be made out to be a complex game, but when a 7 year old can beat it, it can't be too hard to understand.
Chaos Wolf - March 24, 2008 12:06 AM (GMT)
It is a simple engine at base value, but it can be used in a much more clever manner.
For example, you probably could get through Megaman Starforce with just the base deck, but that doesn't make the other chips worthless.
Don't sell it too short.
Regardless though, I have seen the "Stew-pid Megaman" crowd, but generally they are just the rebels who sit in their corner insulting everything.
Erirudo - March 24, 2008 04:45 AM (GMT)
Some rebels THEY are, if they have nothing better to do than sit around all day and tell people their interests suck and they should go do something better.....
Ahem. Onto the topic.
Anyway, Megaman holds a special place in my heart, as it actually kick-started my drawing spree(and the Mechanical Maniacs do too as they were the first megaman site I visited EVER, but enough about that).
Besides, just because Megaman is a side-scrolling action game doesn't mean it's kiddy. Graphics don't make a game, and not every game out there needs storylines deeper than the Grand Canyon to be successful. Megaman was a successful series because it had memorable characters, and a storyline reasonable enough to understand, as well as the challenging gameplay(I'm playing Rockman and Forte and by GOD it's hard, at least by my standards).
...er, that's enough from me.

Firstly, i wasn't saying pokemon was complicated i was just saying it was more complex then megaman. and i wasn't saying a game needs a complex system to be good. but i was just making an example of how baseless these people make their remarks. since alot of these idiots say "LOL. [INSERT GAME HERE} IS GAY/RETARDED/ETC. ALL YOU DO IS {INSERT BASIC GAMEPLAYT HERE]!(Even though in halo all you do is shoot stuff.)"
Erirudo - March 24, 2008 06:13 AM (GMT)
And this is why, kiddies, you only form opinions (and don't go 'LOL POKEYMANS IS GAY BECAUSE ALL YOU DO IS FIGHT OTHER POKEYMANS', etcetera) when you've played mentioned game LONG ENOUGH to form a SUPPORTED opinion on the gameplay and such.
I like Pokemon myself, quite fun actually. I never got into the whole EV training thing, but smashing up random wild Pokemon with your Pokemon is fun as, and digging in the Underground was good too.
Megaman(and Pokemon) is fun because you don't need an instruction manual to tell you what to do every time you buy a different version. The gameplay is basically the same throughout the series, and that's what makes it enjoyable-it doesn't twist and turn and make incomprehensible squiggles around the world and back.
CenetaurmanE52 - March 24, 2008 06:21 AM (GMT)
Unlike *cough*FireEmblemFinalFantasyAdvanceWarsalmostanyotherRPGorstrategygame*cough*
I love simple games, although I love hard strategy or RPG games though as well. Personally, I'm a good Final Fantasy fan, but I also love the Dynasty Warriors series when I don't feel like thinking much.
Erirudo - March 24, 2008 06:27 AM (GMT)
RPG games sometimes produce one of the most confusing 'incomprehensible squiggle storylines' ever. But enough about that. I like them myself, never mind.
Dynasty Warriors' gameplay is pure 'hack, slash and kill things', which is why it's a favourite of mine....
well, that and the fact it has co-op. Killing things is twice the fun when you have a partner to work with.
CenetaurmanE52 - March 24, 2008 06:40 AM (GMT)
I can go with co-op or regular. The A.I and graphics may not be cutting edge, but it makes a stress reliever a tad less violent then Mortal Kombat.
On another note however, they get repetitive...quickly.
Erirudo - March 24, 2008 06:44 AM (GMT)
Indeed they do. But killing things are still fun, which is partly why I like Megaman and Pokemon:
Because you get to kill/injure/explode/knock out things in various degrees of damage. Oh, and there's nothing more satisfying than beating up a Gym Leader's Pokemon or exploding a boss that acts like a total arse.
Elecman - March 24, 2008 11:05 AM (GMT)
*twitches*
Resisting urge to throw something heavy and spiked..
Anywho..
I get a ton of crap for being a Rockman fan from the "in" crowd, but in Web Design class, I'm respected for being a fan. So I don't really mind all the crap, it just gets annoying at times.
I dunno. Maybe it's just one of those fads, y'know, Aku?
Naoshi - March 24, 2008 11:39 AM (GMT)
I often find myself get banned in some Xat.com chatrooms for having a Pokemon name. (Togepi, Seaking Fuck Yeah Im_a_bug_pokemon, etc) rofl
Those chatrooms I were in anyways were shitty and I was only there for the lulz. :D
I have never really been made of fun for liking Mega Man much besides maybe a few tiems. But I was in an AIM brawl chatroom (that I attend daily) and there was this newbie that didn't want me to talk about Mega Man because he "sucks". I told him "If you don't like the discussion of a video game most enjoy here then get the fuck out." The moron replied "fine" and left and we have never heard from him again.
Makenshi - March 24, 2008 06:29 PM (GMT)
One time this girl my age was talking about Megaman and said that he was a human that died and then became a robot. I tried to correct her by saying that Megaman was a household robot named Rock along with Roll built by Dr. Light, but she had no idea what I was talking about and called me crazy, saying that she played "Megaman" and knew the story. It took me a day to realize she was talking about Megaman.EXE, not classic Megaman.
While I like the series, I blame Battlenetwork for this. It's most likely the most popular series, and a lot of people think that it's the original Megaman series. Now take into account that the series was aimed at children, but the people of our age group were already above that. Also take a look at the TV show, the cheesy themes ("WE WILL DEFEAT THE EVIL BECAUSE OF THE POWER OF FRIIIIIEEEEENDSHIIIIIIIIP!"), and one person said how the navis look kind of like Power Rangers. If I wasn't a fan of Megaman and took a look at this series, I would think I'd be too old for it. And because the series is so popular, when "Megaman" is mentioned the non-fans will think of Battlenetwork, even if they are aware of the classic series. But if they actually picked up one of the NES/SNES games and PLAYED it, then they would think differently.
At my school everyone only talks about Guitar Hero and Halo, so I find no point in discussing Megaman with them.

That's...about right. Really, I don't see huge point in talking video games with much anyone at my school. I'd be surprised if any of it didn't go over their heads.
STARZ - March 24, 2008 09:07 PM (GMT)
The only things cheesy about Battle Network was the English-dubbed cartoons, where they gave everyone horrible voices, cut out important plots and hilarious lines to make it 'kid-friendly'. And they didn't follow the games.
But anyways, one of my friends makes fun of Megaman and Anime, and he hasn't even seen either one.

Using the anime/dub isn't good to show a point. The anime itself in Japan was also geared for young'uns as well.
I do like the Battle Network Series, but even the games can be cheesy. You're controling an 11 year old child with a spiffy program. Surly he isn't like other kids and that the higher authroies don't know what is going on when the kid and Megaman.exe find the issue.
But hell! It's Cheesy and fun.
Don't get me wrong. Sometimes the whole "Robot Master vs Net Navi" argument gets annoying. Where people argue and flame people who perfer the RM ove rthe Navi counterpart and vise versa.
STARZ - March 25, 2008 09:00 PM (GMT)
Meiru-chan made a comment about another's characters boobs in the Japanese. I believe it was Colored-man's operator. I would've paid to see that. Catfight!
But anyways, the dubs made it cheesier. Geared for a younger audience is fine, but not 'BluesClues baby cartoon cheesy'
Thing I didn't like about the BN series was that all the girls were like, completely helpless. That's why I invented the character 'Taylor Frederick-Karin Kaze'(also known as Taylor Kami-kaze) to break away from the helplessness of the BN women.

The series was geared for the younger crowd. Not just the dub. Kids in Japan aren't affected by the site of boobies.
Even some episodes of Hoshi no Kirby had some scenes with boobies, Knuckle Joe swearing or whatever. It's geared for children.
Blues Clues was at least an educational TV show.
Back on subject.
Yes, I have met the BN purists vs the Classic Purists.

I'm pretty much okay with most of the series'. I was majorly against Starforce for awhile, but now I just tolerate that it's out there and leave it alone.
As long as it has enough to interest me and doesn't rip off anything, I'm fine.

Starforce don't "rip off" anything. It's just the series after Battle Network. We'll leave it at that.
Same with Classic, X, Zero and ZX.
@ Elec - I agree with what you said. :3
