Title: Classic Series! Where art thou?
Description: No seriously!
Lord Derg - April 29, 2008 01:07 AM (GMT)
Seriously, faulks! (This is both a rant and something belonging in this section)
What happened to the classic series? DId it need to regain momentum?
I think personally, that the classic series is the best of them all! IT has the brightest and most memoral characters, and the fact that the bosses lack personality but still have great design means that the fan base has a lot to do.
I think, however, that 8 games, 5 game boy games, 2 pc games, 1 wonderswan game, a sega remake, a game with bass, and alot of comics spoofing them, a racing game, a arcade game, and a couple a hundred bosses, I think people got sick of it.. for a while.
But usually when Capcom realizes people get sick of things ( IM TALKING ABOUT BATTLE NETWORK) they stilll keep making games.
But in this case, they just...droppped it,and let it die.
This was both a good and bad mood on Capcom's part. Keep Reading
Now this is just me talking, but the robot masters are deafinetley what made Megaman what it is right? I mean, who do you remember after the game? The robot masters, or the guy in tights that killed them? A problem with coming up with robot masters was that...well... they did run out of ideas (Countless ice/fire bots) some unique ideas for bosses failed (Toad man) unique ones succeded, too (Gemini Man) but I think, that something strange in the series are the master weapons. Does anyone really use them? I think for the 1st-2nd game, and maybe the 3rd, but I do not know many people that ever used there master weapons outside of boss battles.
They realized the reactions to the Masters, I think. They realized they where popular.
And then the ideas for levels got less creative. In 1-2, you where using master weapons outside of battle alot. In 2, the levels where designed to make it almost impossible to NOT make it so that you could not. It was a great design.
But in 4,5,6,7,8,etc, weapons are only really important in boss fights. THere designed that way, methinks.
And if it was not for the fan base, some of these masters would not be too awesome.
Seriously. Does megaman have the best fanbase or what? Maybe next to rock and roll (ironically, refrencing two characters) Megaman fans are pretty dedicated.
But people did get tired of the classic series. Good move. They dropped it.
But then people wanted it again (LOL!)
NO REALLY! After a while, THE MEGAMAN FAN BASE became better. Stronger.
Now I always here people saying they want a grand return of Megaman! MEGAMAN 9!
But thats not happening.. OR IS IT?!
For Megaman powered up, they had everything a fan could want! To quote Dr. Wily "You couldn't want more in a meagman game!" It had the level editor, playable robot masters, playable robot masters, remixed music, storyline, playable robot masters, online to an extent, secrets, replayabilty, playable robot masters...
But it did not sell well. Inafune was hoping to remake every game in the classic series (or so) but the first did not sell well. Why?!
The PSP market is, in my somewhat biased opinion, not the right market for Megaman. Or at least not the classic one.
The PSP is undersold, to begin with, but second of all...
The PSP demands more serious games, "cooler" games so to speak. Something that would be nice for the DS or wii, something cutesy would be good for the DS or Wii.
The cutesy graphics in MM:PU where a cinch, to me. This is a classic game, not a x game. If they made it too serious, people would also complain, me thinks.
The cutesy-ness of the original games is what made the classic series what it is. Let the serious stuff be for the fan base.
But then there's the question, if they made a BRAND NEW rockman game, would people still buy that?
Rockman 9 would be a good idea. BUT... they would have to pull out some really, really nice cards.
MM:PU made the demand for RM9 higher. I think its important to know that if they did decide for a RM9, they would have to make it really good to apease the fan base gods.
What do you think? What could make a remake better? What did you think of the rank? What would make mm9 better?
^_^ (A huge rant! Yez!)

Look around here. There are plently of Classic fans. As well on DA and Rockman PM as well. We aren't THAT hidden.
I like Classic the best. I grew up with it. Hell, if it wasn't for Captain N, I wouldn't even known of the Blue Bomber (Despite he was green and sounded like he smoked 34 packs a day.) I still love the series and play them on my NES or the Collection.
Cassic Megaman had... quoted from my Megaman thread on another site...

Serval Cellphone games as well.
The Classic fanbase? They never bothered me. I am part of that fanbase. Sure, there are some weird ones out there, but I ignore them.
About the Battle Network thing?
I only liked 1, 2, 3 and a bit of 5. I never got into BN much, but the games were fun. I tend to ignore BN's "wild" side of it's fanbase.
I have seen some new aged Megaman fans say Classic never existed.

Except Flash Bomb, which can be used to break ice blocks (especially in Frost Man's level) to get secret passages, bolts, etc.
Oh, and Tornado Hold, which can boost you up to get to higher places as an alternative to Rush Coil.
Oh, and Thunder Claw, which you are practically REQUIRED TO USE to pass Search Man's stage.
And let's not forget Sword Man's level, where you have to beat four sections that have puzzles based on using each of the first four weapons.
But you're right, you don't really need them except for boss fights =P.

Or in six where your forms were used to use different routes, some easier than others.
Or in seven, where your attacks made area's almost impossible to beat passable.
Or in two, where you had to use the crash bombs to get past barriers, and Lead Bubbles in order to find the fake floor in Dr. Wily's third stage.
Or in three, where you had to use various abilities to get past obstacles as well, such as the Hard knucle and soft walls.
Other than that, You just use them for boss fights.

Or the thunderbolt in MM7 that allowed you to get the Rush Jet.
Or the Freeze Cracker (racist joke :O!) that froze the lava in Junkman's stage, allowing you to get the R.
Or Protoman's sheild, which made the entire game a whole lot easier.

I already mentioned how two and three have the many levels to use weapons with.
Oh,and megaman 6's forms are not robot master weapons. I said "ROBOT MASTER WEAPONS" not FORMS!
:P

Again... its robot master weapons. Protoman is not a robot master.

True, but how about responding to the points that proved you wrong, instead of just the points that are moot? ^^;

He did say practically required, and most of the stuff mentioned has been optional.
Other stuff is right.
Derg is wrong, but you weren't completely right either.
Also, I was hoping they would remake all of the classic games. If they remade all of the classic games in 3D, with gameplay, and maybe graphics, like Powered Up, on one disk, for the Wii, or maybe all 3 current systems, then it would sell much better.
But that must just be the dream of a madman...like myself.
Lord Derg - May 9, 2008 06:10 PM (GMT)
I agree. But I have the distinct feeling that a MM2PU or higher won't happen.
Akutare - May 9, 2008 06:42 PM (GMT)
Classic fans are everyplace. Just look.
Despite sales, I liked Megaman Powered Up. The game was cute. I liked the level builder and the challenge modes.
Jade - May 10, 2008 05:25 AM (GMT)
Original series is still the best in my opinion. With the X series not far behind.
Spitfire - June 15, 2008 10:01 PM (GMT)
Ah, the classic series. You know, Capcom should turn to homebrewing for the NES so we can crank more classic NES games out of them. But nooooo, they have to go on about "This series has more awesome functions! No wait, we're making an awesomer series! Sorry, people that hung on to the previous, we're completely changing the gameplay for you." The classic series was great, and Battle Network was not too far behind. Funny, the first series in each genre Megaman plays in is remarkably better than the folowing ones.
