Bet you didn't know I was a spriter, huh? HUH? *Brick'd.* Ow...

This topic includes all of my recent works, mixing the good with the...not-so-good.

First up: Frankencross (Originally made as an example of what not to do when spriting. Then my spriter's instinct took over, and I did what I could to make it half-way decent.), never to be finished.

Second up: Marl.EXE, DIY version.

Third up: Fate, WIP, minor edit stage.

Fourth up: Sun Wukong, WIP, minor edit stage.

Last up: Leo (a character belonging to a real life friend of mine), WIP, minor edit stage.

Comments and crits, please. Especially positive crits.

Sun Wu Kong as a sprite? MADNESS.

Looks good to me.

Marl Duothimir - May 4, 2008 02:56 AM (GMT)
MADNESS!? THIS. IS. JOURNEYTOTHEWESTAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Anyway, Leo has an update.

What's this? Actual hand-drawn art? From moi? Impossible!

And yet...

'Tis Marl's son Gamma, in his younger years as a knight in training.

Initial sketch, so don't bother with critiquing all the little details.

Finished Getter 1's chest piece. Something's bothering me about the shading, but I'm not sure what it is.

SpinningDemon - May 22, 2008 12:33 PM (GMT)
Hmm, the problem with the shading might be that it's very formulaic-looking. It's at a perfect vertical axis and it's a gradient... not sure what to suggest as an alternative, my shading takes like 6 hours so it's not recommended you do what I do =P

It doesn't look so bad on the head pieces, it's just the chest and front green parts... maybe you can just make the gradient more subtle?

Elecman - May 22, 2008 03:37 PM (GMT)
I like.. I'd like to see some more in the near future, Marl.

Akutare - May 22, 2008 07:40 PM (GMT)
Pretty impressive, Marl.

Marl Duothimir - May 29, 2008 09:21 AM (GMT)
Getter 1 pixel art...thing...is being put on hold until I learn how to shade better. For now, you have...more 8-bit sprites. Of Getter 1!

Metter team, assemble!

I think I went a little overboard on Metter 3...

Gauntlet101010 - May 30, 2008 03:05 AM (GMT)
Not bad, but yeah ... met 3 doesn't even look like a met anymore.

Marl Duothimir - May 30, 2008 04:15 AM (GMT)
I agree. That's why I decided to make two teams of Metters. One based on (New) Getter Robo, and the other based on Getter G. It'll take a bit of extra work, methinks, but methinks it will also be worth it in the end.

Floofie - May 30, 2008 04:16 AM (GMT)
Nice sprites of the Getter team in Met form!

CHANGE POSEIDON! SWITCH ON!!!

Marl Duothimir - May 30, 2008 08:56 AM (GMT)
Updated the Metters. There are now two versions:

I am fucking insane, trying to put that much detail into 8-bit sprites...

And no griping about the colours on Metter G. I wasn't going for total accuracy.

Hunter_Chameleon - May 30, 2008 10:47 AM (GMT)
I'm more into Grendizer myself, but any other Go Nagai thing is good in my books. You did a good job on them. :)

CenetaurmanE52 - May 30, 2008 02:19 PM (GMT)
Great job...but something seems odd. I think that by making them have so much detail, it makes the sprites appear slightly grainy.
Great job though.

Shiiiiiiiiiiny!

I've said this on three forums now. I have recognized the problem and will attempt to fix it before my next update. Thank you for the critique, though.

The bottom three sprites are the Metter brothers, splitting apart upon contact with the enemy in order to avoid taking damage from their own attack. Credit for the poses goes to Aikin.

Alignment: They're super heroes. What do you think? (All)

Top Speed: 225 mph (Metis), 743 mph (Metan), 52 mph (Metoll)

Special Attacks:

Change! Metter One! - The Metter Brothers combine into a fused form favouring Metis. Flight capability is granted in this form.

Change! Metter Two! - The Metter Brothers combine into a fused form favouring Metan. Subsonic land speed and burrowing are granted in this form.

Change! Metter Three! - The Metter Brothers combine into a fused form favouring Metoll. Speed is relatively low, but undersea travel is granted in this form.

Open Met! - The Metter brothers separate to avoid attacks or change into a different form. Only usable when in one of the three Metter forms.

Metter Razor - Metter One uses the blades on its forearms to carve up its enemies like a Thanksgiving turkey.

Metter Tomahawk - Metter One weilds up to two double-edged axes at a time. Increases melee power.

Metter Tomahawk Boomerang - Metter One throws up to two Metter Tomahawks, which return to it after flying a distance determined by the strength of the throw.

Metter Double Tomahawk - Metter One combines two Tomahawks into one. Can be thrown or used as a pole weapon for melee fighting. Only usable in Dragon form.

Metter Beam - Metter One focuses energy into a projector in its midriff, and fires it in a beam of concentrated Getter Rays. Power is determined by the amount of time spent charging.

Spiral Metter Beam - Metter One surrounds itself with its cape and fires the Metter Beam, causing it to separate into smaller beams and fire at multiple targets. Area attack, but requires more energy to deal the same damage as a regular Metter Beam.

Shine Spark - Ultimate technique. Metter One unleashes all of its power, dashing at the enemy at full speed, and using Open Met! at the last possible moment to avoid taking damage as the energy crashes into the enemy. Tremendous damage, but the brothers are unable to use any energy attacks afterward, and attack and defense power are reduced depending on the amount of energy used for the attack. In the most extreme cases, the brothers won't even be able to recombine. Only usable in Dragon form.

Metter Claw - Metter Two's right hand is a sharp, pointy two-pronged claw. Good for rending the flesh from its enemies.

Drill Arm - Metter Two's left arm below the elbow is a large drill. Useful for burrowing.

Drill Missile - Metter Two fires its drill arm at the enemy, which explodes upon contact. Does not prevent other attacks or Open Met!. Mysteriously reappears upon recombining into Metter Two.

Drill Storm - Metter Two's drill arm spins at extremely high speeds, creating a tornado extending forward from the tip. Enemies caught in the winds are immobilized.

Chain Attack - Metter Two fires its drill arm at the enemy, but with a chain attached to it. This version does not explode, and so does less damage, but pulls the enemy in closer for melee attacks. Only usable in Lyger form.

Mach Special - Metter Two sets its boosters to overdrive, hitting its enemies in a series of supersonic blows. Strains Metter Two's systems integrity by an amount proportional to the damage caused and the duration of the attack. In the most extreme cases, Metter Two may even become totally immobile and vulnerable after the attack is over, until internal repairs are completed. Only usable in Lyger form.

Metter Missile - Metter Three fires a pair of missiles from launchers mounted on its back. Powerful, but only capable of being used once due to limited ammo.

Strong Missile - Metter Three grabs a large torpedo strapped to its back and throws it at the enemy. More powerful than Metter Missile, but also slower due to the fact that it's thrown instead of launched. Only usable in Poseidon form.

Wind Blowing Down from Daisetsuzan - Metter Three grabs an enemy and uses its extending arms to spin them above its head, followed by a devastating throw attack.

Machine Guns - Metter Three is armed with small machine guns on the lower part of its body. Low damage per shot, but rapid fire.

Metter Cyclone - A collar based weapon that produces underwater cyclones designed to incapacitate and disorient an opponent. Metter Three's upper torso armor flips over to reveal a hidden turbine in the upper body, which generates the cyclone. Also effective out of water. Only usable in Poseidon form.

Storm Crusher - Metter Three combines Metter Cyclone and Wind Blowing Down from Daisetsuzan to utterly destroy enemies. Theoretically, at least. This attack is actually the easiest ultimate to escape from. Only usable in Poseidon form.

Abilities and Aptitude:

Metter Wing - Metter One extends a pair of stabilizing wings (similar to Cell's in appearance) for flight.

Hyper Booster - Metter Two has a pair of powerful jet engines on its back that enable high-speed movement.

Caterpillar Treads - Each of Metter Three's three legs has a tank tread on the bottom that allows it to travel across all terrain.

Hobbies and Talents:

Metis - Metis is the most literate of the three brothers, having read more books than the other two put together. However, they are mostly fictional books, and thus he does not gain much intellectual benefit. But damn are they good books. He is also the most sensible (after Metoll), and often makes the plans for missions. He has a sort of "sixth sense", able to detect danger miles away. Or so he claims.

Metan - Metan, despite his genius-level IQ and godly knowledge of technology, robotics, and computers, would much rather play video games and run about without a care in the world than actually put his itelligence to good use. His brothers generally forgive him, though. After all, you're only young once, right?

Metoll - Metoll is a master of various martial arts, but Judo in particular. He trains every day to keep his skills sharp, and usually does not have time for more "trivial" matters, like chores. 'Cause, you know, the enemy could attack at any moment, and he has to be prepared. While he's taking out the trash, they could completely destroy the lab and take over the world, ya know?

Weaknesses:

Common weaknesses - As mentioned by Metal, the brothers are very dependant on one another. If one Metter brother is taken out of action, the other two will only be able to use their normal weapons. This can be a serious tactical disadvantage.

Metis - Strong gusts of wind can blow him off course while flying. Additionally, he prefers to get in close to fight. Simply staying away from him can disrupt his fighting style enough to get in a few good hits.

Metan - He may be fast, but he has shit for armour. A good, solid blow is all it takes to knock him down. Also, he has difficulty navigating through water.

Metoll - Slow. That one word pretty much sums up his main weakness. His attacks are also not meant to kill, but merely incapacitate. There are times when this completely screws him over. He's most at home in the water, so all one has to do is get him on dry land to strip him of his primary advantage.

Friends: Dr. Saotomet, Megaman, Dr. Light, Roll, the rest of the Light family.

Rivals: Black Metter

Enemies: Dr. Wily, Enker, Punk, anyone else who regularly tries to take over and/or destroy the world.

Known Relatives: Each other (brothers), Dr. Wily ("father")

Likes/Favourite activities:

Metis - Reading various kinds of literature while relaxing in his room. Occasionally likes to spar with his brothers.

Metan - Playing video games, digging for buried treasure, and racing cars at the Indy 500. He may be the most intelligent of the brothers, but he's still the youngest.

Metoll - Training and honing his skills while listening to relaxing Asian music. Often asks his older brother Metis to spar with him.

Dislikes/Least favourite activities:

Metis - Metis has difficulty dealing with his younger brothers' laziness, but does not express it verbally. They look up to him as a role model, and as such he cannot allow himself to lose his temper. Why, oh why does he have to be the older brother?

Metan - Metan doesn't like doing work of any kind. He would rather play or find some other excuse not to do anything he doesn't want to. He has a tendency to sulk whenever he has no way out of it.

Metoll - Metoll acts as if he has no pet peeves, but one thing sets him off quicker than anything else in the world: Distractions. He hates anything distracting with a passion fierce enough to set the offender aflame with his gaze. At least, he would, if such a thing were possible.

Gourmet of choice: Energy pellets (All)

Beverage(s) of choice: The Stuff Inside Those Little E-Tanks

Favourite colour(s): Deep red (Metis), stark white (Metan), dull yellow (Metoll)

Catch Phrase(s):

Metis - "You...have got to be kidding me."

Metan - "Go 'way. 'M sleepin'." or "Hold on a minute. I'm on level nine!"

Metoll - "...Huh? Stop disturbing my meditation. ...*Snore.*"

Personality:

Metis - Metis is responsible and mature, and sees himself as a role model for his younger brothers. He grudgingly allows them to do as they wish, as long as they don't break any of the rules of Dr. Saotomet's lab. Their laziness annoys him, but there's not much he can do about it. Metan could easily outrun him, and Metoll is more skilled in the martial arts. So he lets them have their way. Usually. Despite all this, he would fight to the death to protect them from harm, for that is the duty of the eldest brother. This particular trait once cost him his right eye, though he ignores the fact that he now only has 10-10 vision. That doesn't matter. He managed to get them out of harm's way, and that's all he cares about. The fact that he could easily get his lost optic replaced has never occurred to him.

Metan - Metan is his oldest brother's exact opposite. He is childish and irresponsible, often shirking his duties to go run off somewhere and play. Whenever he gets in trouble, he always tries to pin the blame on someone else. He has a strange obsession with digging, and will usually be found doing something involving either that or running around aimlessly. His favourite video game, naturally, is Dig Dug, and he absolutely adores boring through hills with the miniature version of Metter Two's Drill Arm that he carries with him everywhere he goes. Whenever possible, he tries to sneak off and race against cars in drag races and official events. So far he has a perfect record of victories, and a total of seventeen gold trophies lining the shelves in his room. He loves the adrenaline rush such sports provide him, and he even anticipates the next battle with a villain, because it might give him a chance to do both of his favourite things simultaneously.

Metoll - Metoll is calm and quiet, and spends most of his time alone, away from all the noise and distractions of the modern world. In the quiet of his room, Metoll takes advantage of the silence to "meditate". He "meditates" so hard, in fact, that he falls into a deep, deep slumber, snoring loud enough to awaken the neighbours (and indeed, all the forest animals around the lab) at night. When he's not "meditating", he's "burning incense". This "sacred incense" is so strong, it casts him into an entirely separate plane of existence, where he communicates with beings of divine power. It is during these converstations that he attempts to discover the meaning of life and other philosophical stuff. To date, he has not had a single scrap of luck. Between "meditation" and "incense burning" sessions, he trains vigourously in several different martial arts, focusing mainly on Judo. Every now and then, he approaches Metis with a request to spar. He believes that one day, this path will lead him to the truth of the world. But for now, he's content to just kick some villain ass and burn some incense.

Back Story:
Six years ago, Dr. Wily created a Mettaur. It wasn’t just any Mettaur, however. No, this one was special. It was stronger, faster, and smarter than the other Mettaurs. It performed exceptionally well in all of the battle simulations, and could solve problems that impressed even the great Wily himself. Sure that this was the answer to all of his problems, he relaxed more than he had in years.

But one day, just before Megaman’s assault on Wily’s laboratory, the Mettaur disappeared. The only clue as to where it went was a path of destruction leading from its room all the way down to the first floor, where there was a large hole in the wall and even more destruction outside. Wily tried to follow it, but when he reached the end of the trail, there was no sign of his Mettaur.

Feeling dejected at the loss of the Mettaur into which he had put so much time and effort, Wily returned to his laboratory to prepare for Megaman’s attack. He believed that even without it, he could still win with his army of other robots. Unfortunately for him, this simply was not the case. The Blue Bomber broke into his lab, smashed his robot army, and destroyed his latest war machine. Wily barely escaped.

Two years later, the Doctor decided to try and recreate the Mettaur. Only this time, he would make it in separate parts so it wouldn’t go insane as the last one had. The first part he made was the flight module, in the form of a red Mettaur he named “Metis”. Just to make absolutely sure nothing went wrong, he convinced Megaman that he was reformed and used the extra free time to run tests on the new Mettaur. The process took exactly a year. Next, he created the underwater module as a yellow Mettaur, called “Metoll”, and repeated the testing process. Lastly, he made the booster module, built into a white Mettaur which he christened “Metan”, and once again tested it for exactly a year. Confident, he began preparations for his next war on the world.

Five nights after Metan’s “birth”, a shadowy figure snuck into the laboratory while the guards were drowsing. He woke the brothers and told them that he needed to take them somewhere for additional testing. Wondering why Wily would want to test them in the middle of the night, they followed him. Instead of going to the testing room, however, they exited the castle and went to a cave nearby. There the figure explained to them Wily’s evil plans. At first, they didn’t believe him. Why would their creator want to use them for such a horrendous thing as war?

While they were conversing, Wily was quietly surrounding them with his army of robots. Unbeknownst to the brothers, they had tripped a silent alarm when they left the castle without his permission. Once the last units were in place, he called for them to rush into the cave and take back the Mettaurs from whoever had abducted them. He would not allow a repeat of his last mistake! When the troops entered the cave, however, there was nothing there. Nothing but a hole in the ground. Wily, in a fit of rage, ordered his forces to dig up the entire area in search of the Mettaurs. But it was too late. They were already gone, heading for another laboratory many miles away.

When they arrived two days later, the brothers finally saw their kidnapper in the light. He was a Mettaur, just like them! But he was a strange Mettaur, certainly like none they had ever seen. He wore a labcoat, now filthy from their underground trek, and had unkempt grey hair in place of a helmet. He told them his name was Dr. Saotomet, and that he was the late Dr. Saotome reborn in Mettaur form, though the validity of this claim has not yet been confirmed. They entered his laboratory.

After much more explanation, the brothers decided to go along with the crazy old Met’s idea of defending the world from Dr. Wily’s evil. He was probably just lonely, and making things up to get attention. However, several days later they were firsthand witnesses to Wily’s madness. Out shopping for energy pellets and other necessities, they were practically in the middle of the Doctor’s assault on the nearby city of Monsteropolis. They saw innocents being killed, gunned down before their very eyes by the Sniper Joes they had once trained under. They watched as fellow Mettaurs tore down buildings with their pickaxes and finished off anyone that survived with a quick blow to the head. Unable to just sit by and do nothing, the brothers went into action.

They fought hard and fiercely, giving Wily’s forces hell. Their Nerpium helmets protected their vulnerable heads from the Sniper Joes’ bullets, and their enhanced reflexes aided them in avoiding their fellow Mettaurs’ pickaxe strikes. But in the end, they were still outnumbered several hundred to one, and incapable of defeating the entire army. Just as Wily’s robots were closing in to capture them and bring them back to the Doctor’s lab, who should appear but the Indigo Invader himself, Megaman! The defender of justice quickly dispatched the Joes and Mettaurs nearest the brothers, and helped them to escape. It seemed he had watched their valiant efforts from afar as he flew towards the city, and decided that they needed help. They kindly thanked him as he dropped them off at Dr. Light’s lab, then flew off to combat the rest of the army.

They stayed in Light’s laboratory for the night and majority of the next day, playing with Rush and Tango, and in Metan’s case, flirting with Roll. When Megaman returned, he had some questions for the brothers, which they answered without much hesitation. They quickly became friends, and the Blue Bomber offered to take them back to Dr. Saotomet’s lab. They accepted, and soon found themselves back at their new home. They waved goodbye to Megaman and entered, explaining to a worried Saotomet why it took so long for them to get back from shopping. He forgave them, and even showed excitement when he heard that they had met Dr. Light. He told them he was once a colleague of Light’s, back before Wily came along. They called Light Labs and arranged a visit for the next week.

Over the next year, they battled Dr. Wily’s seemingly endless army of robots, never seeming to gain any headway. Fortunately, however, neither was the mad Doctor. They often teamed up with Megaman, who was impressed time and time again with their ability. In between battles, they visited Dr. Light’s lab and went about their daily routines. Metis found that he had a liking for literature, and often borrowed books from Light’s personal library. Metan developed a knack for treasure hunting, and could usually be found digging tunnels through hills or straight down through the ground in search of shiny objects. Metoll discovered Judo, and enrolled in an online academy. This led him to seeking further training in other martial arts to perfect his skills, and to a religion which he found fascinating: Neo Buddhism.

After another year of constant battles, the Metter brothers finally found a hole in Dr. Wily's defenses. Exploiting this advantage, they prepared to invade the mad doctor's laboratory. However, when they arrived they found that he had been waiting for them. It was, as Ackbar once put it, a trap. Still, they fought on, plowing through the army of robots to challenge Dr. Wily himself in the lowest, most secret room of his lab.

Though their power was great, he had learned much from their previous engagements with his creations, and thus knew their weak points. He almost had them beat, when out of nowhere a mysterious figure appeared. It looked just like Metter One, only painted black and with several other minor differences. It easily defeated Wily's doom machine, and the doctor fell to floor, a bloody mess. Though he pleaded for his life, the mystery creature decapitated him with the axe it weilded. The brothers approached the figure, not quite happy at what it did but still relieved all the same. It had saved their lives, after all. Before they could thank it, however, it attacked. They were helpless before its power, and were defeated almost immediately.

However, Metoll came up with a surefire plan, one that had a good chance of succeeding...and one that could very well end his life. He overloaded his systems and rushed headlong at the creature who looked so much like his brother. Though terribly wounded, he did not stop his mad dash for the enemy, and finally jumped upon the monster, clinging on with all his strength. A few seconds later, his body was torn apart by the explosion that ripped through it. Once the smoke cleared, the remaining two brothers could see that the explosion had managed to do some harm to the creature. It was missing large pieces of armour and an arm, and it was leaking mechfluid from various open wounds all over its body. However, it still managed to escape from Metis and Metan before they could stop it. Disheartened by their brother's death, they collected all the pieces of him they could and returned home.

When they arrived back at the lab, they told Saotomet the bad news and presented him with the pieces of their brother's body, asking if there was anything he could do. He simply shook his head and replied that there was nothing that could help their brother at that point. He was dead and gone, never again to fight by their side. They buried what was left of his body and went on with their lives, trying to cope without their fallen brother. It was much easier to do this now that Wily was gone, but it still pained them terribly whenever they went to visit his grave. Several months passed, and disaster once again struck the world.

The monster they had fought the day their brother died was now leading another army of robots in an assault on the planet, leaving a path of total destruction wherever they went. No one was spared from their attack. Men, women, children, animals of all different kinds, all were brutalized when the monster reached them. And reach them it did. There was nowhere anyone could hide, for the robot army was far too large and well equipped, and even the armies of the world could do nothing to slow them down. The army's advance continued unhindered.

Eventually, the remaining two Metter brothers decided to do something about it. They knew they were outnumbered and outclassed, but it was better than just waiting for the enemy to come to them. They made their preparations and departed two days later. They did not have to travel far. A horrific battle ensued, and the brothers fought most courageously. However, superior numbers won in the end. They were unable to defend themselves from every attack launched at them, and succumbed to their wounds in short order. The last thing they saw before losing consciousness was a cyclone ripping through the robots and a familiar shape charging toward them through the crowd of enemies.

When they woke up, they were in the medical wing of Dr. Saotomet's laboratory, patched and fixed, though still recovering. Looking around, they noticed that someone had been sitting with them, waiting for them to awaken. Someone they knew. Someone who couldn't possibly be there. Metoll greeted them enthusiastically, hugging each of them in turn. Once they were out of the hospital, they asked Saotomet how Metoll had returned from the dead. He told them that while they were gone, he had gone out to visit their brother's grave, and to pray that he would protect them. While he was there, he heard a faint voice. After a few minutes, he realized it was coming from underground, and began digging, eventually unearthing Metoll's remains.

It seemed that his brain had survived the explosion, and was calling out to him for help, which he gladly provided. He built a new body for the brother, and upgraded it to give it additional power and new abilities, such as the cyclone Metis and Metan had seen before losing consciousness. They gladly agreed when the good doctor offered to upgrade their bodies, as well.

Now armed with their new bodies and new powers, the brothers fight together against the evil forces of the creature only known as the Black Metter. They have gained plenty of experience from past conflicts, and are confident they can win this war like they won the one against Wily. However, the validity of this belief has yet to be proven. Still, they fight as one against their foes, for they are brothers. And brotherly bonds are not ones easily broken. Now let's just hope they don't kill each other now that things are back to normal again...

That's epic, Marl.

Getting better! Bowlman looks a little small.

I've noticed that as well. It's unlikely to change in the near future.
