Title: Japanese fanartist extraordinaire
Description: Napo!

Raijin - June 5, 2007 03:17 AM (GMT)
So a while back my little Name Origins side-project accidently led me to a japanese oekaki board acting as the gallery/forum for this guy calling himself Napo who caught my interest for his Rockman fanart which wasn't just high-quality, but high variety. This guy gives unique and thoughtful looks at lots of obscure characters from every MM series. Not quite as obscure as the Mech's focus gets, but he seems like the kinda guy that would make a PC RM look good if he knew they existed.

I've spread this around on AIM a bit in the past few months, so a lot of you already watch the gallery. Vulcan's even using one of Napo's pieces as an avatar.

What made me want to finally share this find with the whole forum was the discovery that three days ago he sorta hit the fandom big-time by getting one of his arts posted on the official anniversary site. Yeah, I know, not as impressive now since a couple of our own greater community members made it in (one of them, disproportionately twice, even) but since Napo's art is officially viewable to the whole fandom now, and I'm sure anyone who's seen that pic already has been itching to see more from this artist, I figure now is as good a time as any.

His oekaki board. It's usually updated at least once a week. His Rockman gallery. Not updated as often, but has most of the best stuff. Check out the entire page dedicated to MM3. You know why I like this guy's work so much. Finally, his Official Anniversary entry. Pretty much the highlight of the entire project.

As you can tell from just the first page of his board, he can be pandering to the flavor of the month crowd with Starforce stuff one moment and then pandering to your nostalgia the next with a heavily battle-damaged Morph Moth. I'm not usually one to get all fanboyish over some fanartist that I can't even communicate with, but this guy's stuff isn't just good, it's often inspirational, especially for the team community. Unlike your average fanartist, this guy gives face time to the side-characters more than the main characters, and that's awesome to fans like us.

Yeah, his art rocks. And after checking out his actual Rockman page, I decided to change my avatar to one of his images. Take a wild guess which one...

Scary, isn't it?

Jet - June 5, 2007 04:33 AM (GMT)
Dang! That is some sweet fanart there. I'll have to keep a watch on his gallery now. Thanks for sharing this Raijin.

Pegasus EXE - June 5, 2007 04:36 AM (GMT)
Holy shite, that's amazing *Saves a couple images*
Thanks for showing us Raijin

Proto Stryker - June 5, 2007 07:05 AM (GMT)
Great, now I have to add ANOTHER bookmark to my FireFox stuff. 8D

Rebel40000 - June 5, 2007 02:46 PM (GMT)
I can't even look at his art without getting consumed by it. "Just one more page," I keep telling myself... the next thing I know I've gone through 25 of 'em.

Saturn Ballad - June 5, 2007 04:48 PM (GMT)
Nice. :D That's where I got my Ito picture.

Vulcan - June 5, 2007 07:20 PM (GMT)
I've been personally saving all the pictures from his oekaki for a month now. Unfortunately, by time I decided to start doing that everything before image 90 had been deleted. What a bummer... oh well, his art is still awesome. I'm loving the new one with Iris, it really brings out all the sorrow she must have felt.

Jade - June 5, 2007 07:27 PM (GMT)
Oh god... what's with that semi-Yaoi pic of Launcher and Volt Kraken?

"Ha!! I knew it!!!"

SHUT UP, VILE!!!

...

Just kidding there. Seriously, though. That stuff is incredible.

Vulcan - June 5, 2007 07:32 PM (GMT)
About that, didn't Capcom at one point say they're brothers?

Hunter_Chameleon - June 5, 2007 07:33 PM (GMT)
Will it make it worse if I say they're supposed to be brothers (as hinted in X5) ?

Anyways, this art is just great, and I'll never thank Naoshi (or was it Iga ?) enough for the link.

At times, I consider changing my avatar to the Quint picture, but well, I'll keep this one no matter what.

Are they? Now that I didn't know. I assumed that they were good friends or something.

That's what I remember it being, with X's conversation with Kraken in X5.

I think he keeps them all anyway and adds his favourites to the Rockman section eventually. Of course there's still who knows how many oekakis we'll never see just because he didn't think they were worth archiving online. Too bad. At least there's plenty of great stuff that's still up to fill that void.

Proto Stryker - June 6, 2007 12:42 AM (GMT)
My avie looks so much better when it's larger. X3

That was Naoshi, who showed me at the same time. =P Yeah, reading this thread made me want to change my avie back. This guy is absolutely phenomenal.

Any way to translate this?

Raijin - June 7, 2007 03:40 AM (GMT)
Babelfish/Google translator will give you some rough strokes, but it's still going to be fairly incomprehensible. It might help if you're just looking for key words in his description or something.

Rebel40000 - June 7, 2007 03:57 AM (GMT)
Hmm, wonder if I can find those old pics of Magna again.

EDIT: Found it, but I kinda like the picture of Ring more right now... :D

Amethyst Nighthut - June 7, 2007 04:09 PM (GMT)
Okay... he's good. He actually made Quint look like he could be a threat!

Take it as one of the greatest compliments EVER. The chances of getting another quite like it is slim to none.

Pegasus EXE - June 8, 2007 11:39 AM (GMT)
He should draw more Airman, and perhaps a Crashman o.o the only Airman I found was the emo Airman, where he's..crying..for some reason

Raijin - June 8, 2007 11:09 PM (GMT)
I like to think that one is actually PC Waveman.

Raijin - June 18, 2007 02:38 AM (GMT)
I used to think we were never going to make some kind of contact with this guy, but it looks like he made contact with us first. Check out today's post on his oekaki blog (with the picture of the Ryuusei afro guy watching himself on TV and dropping his drink.

He has a link to the Rockman Strategy page. The Mechanical Maniacs RMS page. He's friggin' linking to our site! He's been here!

Could fanart of the Constellation droids, PC RMs, and the Dreamwave RMs be far behind?

Either way, goes to show how awesome Gauntlet's RMS coverage is if even japanese fans are finding it a useful reference.

Gauntlet101010 - June 18, 2007 02:50 AM (GMT)
Heh, yeah, I noticed that too.

I'm not kidding around when I say we're the only site with any useful information on the game. I can't even find any foreign sites with info on it, to the degree that I have.

Raijin - June 18, 2007 02:54 AM (GMT)
If I understand the babelfish translation (which I may very well not), he's remarking on the fact Ryuusei wasn't the first Rockman game to have constellation-themed bosses. Not sure if it's something he just discovered now, or something he knew for a while that he was just pointing out to others that didn't.

Magnetman Eigen - June 18, 2007 03:04 AM (GMT)
The only thing better than Napo discovering MM3.com would be him joining this forum and attempting to start an RMS team, all while speaking nothing but Japanese.

I'd join that team so damn fast...

Rebel40000 - June 18, 2007 07:26 PM (GMT)
Hmm... If he has been to the Mech's site, then what are the chances of him coming to the forums and seeing this topic about his work? :P

Raijin - November 5, 2007 07:43 PM (GMT)
Necroposting this shamelessly (because I can) to point out that it finally happened. He drew Voltman. Ariga style! It begins.

Except MM3 can't be entirely blamed for it. He credits this site for PC MM info. This chaosphere seems to be dedicated to the more obscure Robot Masters, including fanart and fanFIC about Stardroids, the Dimension Series, the Costellation Droids, and even the "Wiley Numbers". I can't really read the fic, but it seems to directly address issues like how Wily's name is spelled differently in the PC games (different character entirely?) and suggests the PC3 RMs were literally designed after - or even modifed from - the official RMs that they resemble. Chaosphere in-turn links to the Mechanical Maniax (sic), since where else are they going to get enough material to study? Gauntlet probably already knew about this place for a while since he keeps track of which links people follow to get to the site.

Either way, we just might be seeing some more Japanese fanart of the PC Megaman games in the near future. Awesome. Who says those games didn't matter?

Gauntlet101010 - November 5, 2007 08:28 PM (GMT)
Sweet. I don't think I visited Chaos sphere, but I haven't checked the links too often. I think I'll link back.

This isn't the first time I've seen Japanses sites weith PC stuff tho. It's very rare, but they are around.

Zerkai - November 6, 2007 12:07 AM (GMT)
An the Leader of the MMPC1/3 Team. I feel it is my right to say...

...

...

... w00t!

Voltman looks awsome in that pic. I can't wait to see if he'll do more PC RMs

Raijin - November 6, 2007 06:18 PM (GMT)
I think the chaosphere webmaster just joined DA and faved my Crorq piece.

And said webmaster is, apparently, "very very very" grateful for the Mechanical Maniacs.

Mr. Gauntlet, Thank You very very very much from the bottom of my heart!!!

……後半バックストリートボーイズの歌詞だよ。英語やっときゃよかったシュン。

In other words, all the "important" stuff is already in English. You could have probably figured it out from there anyway. :p
