Hi all,
I am one of the many in the States who discoverd "Bad Girls" rather late. In my case, about a month ago. The show is of course engaging, outstanding, and whatever other glowing adjectives come to mind. The Helen/Nikki plot is so well done that I feel a twinge of pride for the UK in general, especially as this happened back in ol' 1999 and it would have been impossible for that to happen here then. Sure, Labour run government didn't turn out the way I'd hoped when they were elected, but bloody hell, can this country turn out a great love story.
Anyway, on a personal note, I've always felt I would be an absolute bookworm if I were ever unfortunate enough to be in prison and Nikki's tendency to escape via reading has really helped my empathize with that character. So, here in the season of summer reading, I'm going through the books she is seen reading in series 1-3. So far, these are the books I've seen her reading, or in one case, hinting to Helen to read.
Oranges Aren't The Only Fruit--Jeanette Winterson (BTW great interview with her recently on American public TV)
Romeo and Juliet--Shakespeare
Little Dorrit--Charles Dickens
Middlemarch--George Eliot
Sophie's World--Jostein Gaardner
The Ambassadors--Henry James
Any additions?
Cheers,
F
I thought I caught a glimpse of Henry James " Portrait of a Lady".

Just bought Oranges Aren't the Only Fruit and Sophie's World -- I'll see how those go before moving to Henry James! I only have Bad Girls episodes through Series 3 #14, so pretty soon I'll have to amuse myself by READING again...hahaha
I've been spoiled by all the DVDs. "Nikki Wade" is just so lovely -- and a bookworm, my favorite kind of person!

there are many more titles over on the Helen and Nikki Boards in case anyone over here is looking for some new reading, I've gotten to maybe one, I don't read as much as I should....
