Hello,
This lesson is a simple way to create a character. There are deffinate pro's into doing it this way, other than drawing away with out a care in the world. But remember students, this is only necessary if your purposely trying to create a character for future use which needs a personality/background.
Step one: Think of what you want to achieve.
A key to character creation is seeing its purpose. There is nothing more worse than creating a really good character who isnt the main character or is involved in the story long enough, kind of a waste isnt it? Some have tried to bring a similar character back into the sotry later on, but good manga readers will notice that its only a clone of the original and dismiss it. (this isnt going to happen all the time, but its better to save a wonderful character for either the main part, or a more involved part of the story line.)
Step two: Personality
With personality, comes style. With that you can find it easier to design its clothes/weapons/grammer/dislikes and likes and its place in the manga.
An example of a character could go:
Dan B is a male student who attends manga high. His personality is similar to the star sign gemini. He's known to change his attitudes fairly quickly in certain situations and can be a bother to deal with in awkward times. His favorite hobbies are drawing and practising his martial arts, and automatically classes anyone who practices martial arts as a rival and has the tendencies to ambush them, his ultimate goal is to become best student in the school and is happy to fight anyone for it.
note: that description was actually lame, but typing 90wpm, i gotta say its pretty good.
Step three: A Name
Now, with a character comes a name. Some might dismiss this as not being important, but for this case it really is! Try to avoid boring names such as bob or jane, for this can be an eyesore to read. How ever, if you intend to create a character who is an annoying then by all means, avoid using good names!
By naming the character, you could find improvements that you've missed in the previous steps. And feel free to make alterations, because your ultimate goal is not only to create a character, but to give it personality and a life.
- Well, this is the first turtorial on character creation. If i create a second one, it'll be using pictures instead of text. Heheh, I'll be going into the past/present and future of the characters creation in the next turtorial.
Homework: Create a character
This is just to make sure that everyone is on the right path. Another good note is to make the description short and sweet. Might want to save some for after or keep it for another character (giving one character an awesom description, could strain you in making the rest just as exciting)
e.g:
Name: Dan
Description: Dan is a new student who is attending manga high. He is average height and has long hair which reaches his shoulders. People tend to believe that his personality is a bit on the wild side since it changes depending on the situation, and believe that there could be a second person altogether.
I can use a description of one of my existing chars, correct?
Ok. Here goes...
A boy sat on a fallen tree, the snow on his shoulders glistening. His name was Okaibo Takeda.
He was of medium build, a bit on the thin side. His ears were long, not unlike those of an elf.
His red, seemingly pupil-less eyes had a depressed, but friendly appearence, and threw off a faint glow.
His hair was silver, nearly matching the snow surrounding him, and it was cut long on one side, falling over his right eye, and masking it.
He was wearing a denim shirt, and blue jeans. He was carrying no supplies, and no food.
Okaibo is a very quiet person, but can become quite loud, and violent when angered. Little is known about his past, except that he is much older than he appears.
Okaibo still harbors many secrets, which only reveal themselves until the time is right......
((Is this good enough?)) lol
Yes very good, You might want to re-word the last description thou, it hovers around secrecy and mentions it quiet a bit. I'll have to read it again later, when i'm not tired just incase its me. But other than that its pretty good, Hopefully i'll introduce a tut, that'll explain how to transform a characters description onto paper, and how you write it, determins how its drawn too. *wonders if he'll be able to pull it off* er anyway, good job.
