Title: Kitten found in Hatfield
katrinasq - January 4, 2008 03:10 PM (GMT)
On New Year's Day, my sister rescued a kitten in Hatfield, but I don't think we'll give her up considering the condition she was in. The poor little thing was going under vehicles to keep warm, and was hungry, too. She was pretty beat up with scratches, etc., ear mites, and an eye infection. The most disturbing thing we found was the bb hole and bb we found in her stomach. After $130 at the vet, we also found that the eye infection was actually caused by her eye rupturing, probably from another bb. The vet said there was no need to remove the bb in her stomach as it's under her skin, but not hurting anything, but we'll ask them to remove it when they spay her. She will also need to have the missing eye sutured closed. We have taken her into our home, and she truly seems grateful to be warm, fed, and loved, and is very loving. She litter trained really quick.
I realize that not everyone is an animal lover, and I respect other opinions, but there is a big difference between an opinion and criminal cruelty. I know my little post won't make a huge difference, but I know there are animal lovers on the forum, so I wanted to share. For such a "Christian" community, there sure is a lot of animal neglect and cruelty.

Bless you. :thumb:
When the weather turns cold, can't help thinking about the dogs and cats with no place warm.....esp. the ones who are tied up, with no shelter. :nono: They can't even run under a house.
As for religious affiliation, I've found no correlation between that and human compassion. Either you have it, or you don't. :dunno:
When I first moved here, I was on the way to a movie with a *first* date, when a satrving, sick puppy ran out into the road . I pulled over, looked around for a house, or other pups, and there were none. So, I put the puppy into the car, and drove to Walmart to get food, and a blanket for it, as it needed immediate care.
Can you believe----My *date* actually started complaining about how we were "missing a movie because of a puppy" .
After Walmart (I was driving) my *date* got dumped back to his front yard, pronto. :D
(I hear he's still single, if there are any takers. )

Lector and Katrinasq you are GOOD folks! :hugg:

Just can't understand how people can be so insensative to animals. My dream has been to win a lottery and buy enough land and make provisions for all homeless, unwanted animals.

We realize that spaying and neutering is one way of,probably the only way to control animal population. That's why we have low cost clinics for this purpose. We have had favorable responses to these clinics. The next one is Jan 22,23 & 24 with another one in March. We're going to try to have them every other month.
Lector--you were too nice to that guy. I would have left him at WalMart.
Scorpion, thank you for taking care of the little kittie. I know she appreciates it and will be a great addtion to your household.
We had one that we found with an eye problem. It was probably congenital because she saw several vets and no one could tell us what the cause was. She was with us 17 years. I lost her 2 yrs ago and still miss her.

catsndogs, where is the clinic located? I take in strays and keep most of them especially the cats to keep the rodent population down due to having lots of feed for the horses. I have 2 large kennel crates that I can load into the back of my truck to bring the cats. Is there a limit as to how many I can bring at one time and what is the fee for neutering and spaying. I also have a wolf/shepard hybrid female that I would like to have spayed. Cost please?

Well, I messed up. I thought I had posted a reply but I don't see it. I'll try again.
We host our spay/neuter clinics for Dr Joanna McManus and Arkansans for Animals. Due to the iffy weather in January, this clinic will be held at the CMA Youth Bldg in Hatfield.
Please call our shelter at 479-394-5682 Tues thru Sat for appointments and costs.
Hope to see many of you there.

Psssst...Catsndogs, in your earlier post here you gave me credit for taking care of the kitty. That was actually katrinasq. But I did once save a goldfish from being trapped in a breadbag in a pond. True story. Does that count?

You don't know how much I screwed up on that reply. That was the one error I didn't catch. I know katrinasq is a good person and of course her sister would rescue a hurt homeless kitten.
Yes, a goldfish in a bread wrapper counts. I wonder if it was one of the goldfish in my little pond that washed away after the first good rain. Never tried that again.

My sister has named the kitten "Lucky Lilly" for obvoius reasons. We just call her Lilly or Little one, and she is adjusting well to life in our little zoo. The other 3 cats in our house have even (mostly) stopped hissing at her, and she's very sweet. She's quiet and affectionate. She's still a little cautious of my dogs, but not terrified. Her eye infection has cleared up and the ear mites seem to be gone, and she's growing like crazy.
Here's the interesting part. I had adopted a little dog for our Mom for Christmas about 6 years ago. (I know, never get a pet for someone else, but I did it knowing if it didn't work with Mom, I would keep him.) He was a Peke-Pom mix and was found wandering the streets with severe eye infections in both eyes, and was fostered in a home with children and other animals, so we were aware of many things. Long story short, Mom and Spencer were made for each other and had happy years together, even after he lost his sight and control of himself. I used to tease Mom that they got along so well because they were both "cranky old farts". Got a chuckle every time. My Mom passed away 2 years ago, and my sister kept Spencer, bringing him with her when she moved here from NY in October. His health has been deteriorating for a long time, but she just didn't have the heart to have him put to sleep as he wasn't suffering. Well, Little Lilly has many of the same markings as Spencer, and is the same color, so my sister kind of took it as a sign that Spencer would be going home to God soon. She was right. We had him put to sleep on Thursday as he took a turn for the worse and we didn't want him to suffer. I think finding Lilly was meant to be. She seems to be easing my sister's sadness and distracting her quite well.
We will be spaying her in March when she is old enough, and hopefully there will be a clinic, and hopefully they can take the BB out of her tummy then. Any chance they might suture her eye at the same time? If there's a clinic, that is.
Anyway, thank you for the kind words and support!

Glad it's all working out for you, Kq. That is one lucky kitten! And one lucky family! :thumb:

We will be having a clinic in early March. I will post the dates later. Anyway, I'm not sure Dr. McManus would take the BB out or suture her eye. I'll try to remember to ask when I see her.
I'm so sorry that Spencer went to the Rainbow Bridge and I'm sure Lilly is a great comfort. We do as much as we can for our "kids" but when it's time we have to face it. I think about it for quite awhile before I do it but eventually they tell me it's time. I've lost 3 cats in the past 5 yrs but all were older--14 to 17 yrs.

That's sort of what we did. He was not himself for the last year or so, and he seemed to just be not right, like he was losing his mind, turning constant circles, wandering all the time and barking at nothing for long periods of time. Then, we found 3 good sized lumps along his ribs. When I came home for lunch and he was crying (for the first time in months), I knew he was beginning to suffer, and we had to do the kind thing. And, yes, Lilly has been a great comfort and a sweet girl. God must have led her to my sister that day for more than one reason.
