Title: Ham Radio
Description: Any Hams out there?

Mitchell - August 2, 2008 02:50 AM (GMT)
Just passed my technician exam today, pretty excited about it! (Got a 94.3%! woo! :D ) I was wondering if any MenaForum members are hams. As much of an electronics and computer enthusiast as I am, this radio stuff is all pretty new to me. I'd like to meet some people and learn as much as I can! I don't have my call yet, waiting on the FCC.

If the local ham operators want a sub-forum where the club forums are, we'll make one.

I have been a ham for 13 years.. One of the very first "No Code Technicians". Not much activity around here anymore.. I would love to see that change, but the activity has steadily gotten worse.. I'm from OKC, big club events, transmitter hunts, EOC training, NIGHTLY nets, Big monthly meetings.. Up there it really was a hobby..

Looking at the ARRL list, I would have thought there'd be a few more of us around. I do know several people on the list, looking forward to radio contact!

When I get more into it, I plan on selling ham equipment at my store and raising awareness about this great hobby. Maybe we can get a few more people on the waves.

There is a Hamm club here in Mena and they usually meet at the Lime Tree restaurant once a month. Watch the newspapers during the week and listen to KENA they usually have the meeting info.

I'm on the disaster response committee at work and need to get a HAM license. Can you recommend a good study guide?

Here's a couple good sites with practice tests:

The first one you need to pass is technician.

How do you like that? Consecutive call signs. :D I'll be going for my vanity call before too long.

Lots of people in Mena should have similiar ones, whoever we just tested with.

CQ CQ. Skip propagation is running strong on the H.F. bands (26.065 - 29.995)this evening. Been talking coast to coast. I usually like to QSO at 27.385Mhz on Lower Side Band. Call sign is Razorback 506 (Mouth of the South), transmitting from the western end of the hog pen. We are QRT.

Is the equipment/testing reasonably affordable? Does it require a large tower antenna? Any problems with local reg's on the antennas?

Sounds very interesting! Used to shoot skip on homebase cb decades ago.
