The Polk County Pulse and the Herbert A. Littleton Det. 1261 of the Marine Corps League are sponsoring an essay contest for Polk County Eight Grade students. The essay contest offers cash prizes for the top three essay winners as well as certificates' of accomplishment. Cash Prizes are as follows: First Place receives $60., Second Place receives $30. and Third Place receives $10. The winners will also have their essays published in the April 22 issue of The Polk County Pulse.
All essays must be received by The Polk County Pulse Office at 512 Seventh Street, Mena Arkansas no later than close of business on April 17. The essays must have the following information listed on the essay when submitted: The authors name, teacher, school, parent/guardian name and a daytime phone number.
The title of the essay must be "Why Herbert A. Littleton is a Hero to me".
Marine PFC Herbert A. Littleton was born July 1, 1930, in Mena, Arkansas to Paul and Maude Littleton. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1948. His fighting action took place in the south and central Korean operation from 1950 until his death in 1951. PFC Herbert A. Littleton received the Medal of Honor as a result of his self sacrifice and bravery. (He is Polk County's only native son to ever win The Medal of Honor).
The local Herbert A. Littleton Det. 1261 has been working diligently to erect a memorial in honor of Herbert A. Littleton. Through these efforts a monument will be dedicated at the Polk County Courthouse on April 26 at 1:30 p.m. More information about this will be made available in the near future.
The winning essays will be published in The Polk County on April 22 on the an
anniversary of PFC Littleton's heroic Action.
